- BorsKaegel, on 05/28/2009, -3/+320Now Hulu just needs to get more networks behind it.
- cygnus2112, on 05/29/2009, -20/+207Dear Hulu,
***** you, eh.
Sincerely,
Canada - shadowspawn, on 05/29/2009, -2/+184all 5 episodes of a 6 year series?
bah - ivansotof, on 05/29/2009, -2/+179Why the Google Wave logo? :)
- stuffradio, on 05/29/2009, -9/+98One word, Canada.
- blackhole82, on 05/29/2009, -0/+86Yeah, I hate how they only have a few episodes for any given show now. I remember a while back you could watch full seasons of a show, but apparently not any more.
- smotpoker, on 05/28/2009, -29/+92No Linux port :(
- Everen, on 05/28/2009, -4/+66Am I the only person who sees this as the real reasoning behind Hulu's blocking of Boxee? "The content providers made us do it" suddenly becomes "we don't like the competition?"
According to Hulu, the content providers wouldn't allow Hulu on Boxee because they don't want people watching Hulu on the televisions. If that is truly the case, then why would Hulu Desktop be designed to work so well with remotes designed primarily for use with a 10' interface (WMC/Front Row)?
Does anyone else smell fish? - evil-doer, on 05/29/2009, -11/+67and work in canada
- wontstoptalking, on 05/29/2009, -19/+65Haha. "So long, cable." Sure.
I use Hulu all the time and I have absolutely no intention of abolishing my cable TV subscription. I need to watch The Office when it happens. Not only that, but my Internet connection is slow as hell and could never sustain a decent quality picture through the Hulu desktop software.
It's awesome, I love it, and I use it all the time, but Hulu will not replace TV anytime soon. It only has a few select stations on board, anyway. Though hopefully it'll grow.
And do you think all the grandmas in the country are about to miss Dancing With the Stars so they can try and figure out this Hulahoop doohickee? - sirjimithy, on 05/29/2009, -1/+46Hulu is only part of the progression away from cable. If you only watch a couple TV shows, it's cheaper to buy season passes from iTunes than pay for a cable subscription. With cable, I'd pay for hundreds of channels and 95% of the programming is straight garbage. Between Hulu, iTunes store and video podcasts, I have all the entertainment I need, and the only money my cable provider gets from me is $25 a month for my high-speed internet.
I don't see cable TV going away any time soon with the American public, but for the tech-savvy people, it's basically a waste of money. - yifanlu94, on 05/29/2009, -2/+46In Hulu's defense, it's the networks that determine this kind of stuff.
- BoneStamp, on 05/29/2009, -0/+42Hulu is owned by Fox and NBC; they don't own distribution rights outside of the US. Talk to Rogers and CTVglobemedia about better online access to content in Canada, they own most of the rights to these shows.
- qiaohua, on 05/28/2009, -8/+50Um...Boxee...
- MxM111, on 05/29/2009, -2/+40"So Long, Cable. Hulu Launches Free App For TV Viewing"
Not so fast! I put limit how much you can download/watch for internet over MY cable.
- Comcast
/Conflict of interest. - traviswood, on 05/29/2009, -1/+38Until Hulu puts ***** like What Not to Wear and Say Yes To the Dress my girlfriend will never give up cable. Which means I will never not have cable.
Cable is far from dead my nerd friends. - inactive, on 05/29/2009, -0/+33One of my grandest hopes is for Comcast and Charter to go down in flames over anti-competitive and deceptive trade practices as well as class action lawsuits for the same. That being said, I cut my cable+internet bill by $40 a month last night; after calling and complaining that I was paying WAY too much for what I was receiving ($110 for standard digital cable, ***** quality cable at that, and a cable modem) and thrice being insulted by "customer care" reps ("Well, it's not your fault you don't take advantage of our On Demand Crapfest, you're paying for it so you should be!" "No, I don't use it, so I shouldn't be getting CHARGED for it"...), I calmly called back into their systm for the fourth time and began making an appointment to disconnect, when we got to the part about my reasons, I told them I was going to get more channels and faster internet for half the price by switching to DSL and a dish, and it was AMAZING how fast the rep cam back with "What if we match their price?".
I've had lovely *cough* experiences with boh Charter and Comcast. My impression: Charter likes giving the impression they care, but they're mostly just goddamned incompetent. We had 18 complaint calls and 13 tech visits over a 9 month period because of perpetually (all day every day) internet and cable intermittent problems, until the final tech noticed that they'd left a connector barely attached out at the pole), while Comcast's idea of customer service involves a barrel and no lube, because "***** you, we're Comcast, and we don't HAVE to care because you have no other viable options."
Comcast, if you're reading this, ***** YOU.
Sincerely, your customers. - ryansmith18, on 05/29/2009, -1/+32I tried the Hulu desktop app last night. It's ridiculous how closely it resembles Boxee. It even functions just like it when navigating through menus and whatnot.
It leaves one wondering... why the hell do the content providers have a problem with Boxee playing Hulu, but not the Hulu app playing Hulu? It's the exact same thing - a desktop client that will allow you to watch internet TV on your television. It's just absurd that they see their client as any different from a 3rd party app. - MusicMagi, on 05/29/2009, -2/+32Are you really surprised?
- lazyslacker, on 05/29/2009, -2/+30I disagree. One of my favorite shows is on CBS. How I met your mother.
- Isaymeh, on 05/29/2009, -2/+28Hopefully they will bring it to the Xbox360 as well. <3 My netflix streaming to my Xbox...
- fadetoone, on 05/29/2009, -0/+25I'm guessing they determined the impact with DVD sales.
- etx313, on 05/29/2009, -3/+27It's just flash, It'd be easy for them to port it over.
- alpha88, on 05/29/2009, -7/+31That's not true, they don't watch TV because they're too busy writing drivers to make their computers actually useful.
- jstohler, on 05/29/2009, -7/+28These are a pretty bad set of arguments.
1. For $10 more a month, you could get a Turbo Internet package. Cost offset by canceling cable.
2. ABC is coming to Hulu soon.
3. This isn't for grandmas. It's for people with tech savvy. - kahoona1, on 05/29/2009, -0/+21Please have Discovery sign up.
- etruscan, on 05/29/2009, -2/+21Not many folks have access to a proxy server... and if you've ever tried using a free and open proxy, you would understand that won't work.
- fury420, on 05/29/2009, -2/+21ummm.. why? Massive amounts of American content flows northward over the border on television, complete with american advertisements. If this is not an issue for shows on the hundreds of channels I get in Canada via cable, how is this an issue when i stream the exact same show, from the exact same source via the internet?
- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -3/+22what?!
Something is free when you don't have to pay for it. Do you need to go back to elementary school? - yaosio, on 05/29/2009, -0/+19It's so you have to buy the DVDs. So why doesn't Hulu sell the stuff from their site? It is a mystery.
- inigomntoya, on 05/29/2009, -0/+17How stereotypical of you. I will have you know that MY fat rolls are very well indexed and organized. I wrote a script that tells me which part of my body is best to rest the remote so it will be easier to retrieve if I happen to lose my remote.
Smart Ass... - jasonh1234, on 05/29/2009, -1/+18Yeah y'all
- fringetime, on 05/29/2009, -5/+22Why the ***** is the google wave logo the thumbnail?
- borez, on 05/29/2009, -0/+17Come to the UK please Hulu.
- MWeather, on 05/29/2009, -2/+18"It leaves one wondering... why the hell do the content providers have a problem with Boxee playing Hulu"
Because they were releasing their own app soon.
"but not the Hulu app playing Hulu?"
See above. - Homerr, on 05/29/2009, -0/+16Cable companies will now force bandwidth caps.
- themastersb, on 05/29/2009, -0/+15No Canada port :(
- matthewf01, on 05/29/2009, -0/+15Aleman360 is right; I watch The Office ("WHEN IT HAPPENS") for FREE, in UNCOMPRESSED HIGH DEFINITION with a pair of old rabbit ears and a TV with an ATSC tuner inside. People who have been sucking on the cable teat for too long don't even realize what free network television is.
- jugglingjon, on 05/29/2009, -5/+18I imagine it's hard to justify spending time/money creating a port for Linux users, when only a tiny fraction of their audience actually uses Linux.
- mr_ziy, on 05/29/2009, -1/+14And the Big Bang Theory. And no, it isn't a porno.
- xsecretfiles, on 05/29/2009, -8/+20Only old people care about CBS
- buckyballs, on 05/29/2009, -1/+13Yes, but most people who would be interested in this have an internet connection anyway, internet is cheaper than internet AND cable TV.
Anyways, can it be September yet so the UK can have it too?
:) - brundlefly76, on 05/29/2009, -5/+17arent you used to that by now?
- yaosio, on 05/29/2009, -1/+13The Office is not shown live.
- dwtc, on 05/29/2009, -1/+12Disney/ABC is signed up... currently there's just one Disney fantasy series, but Lost and the rest of the big ABC primetime shows should be on hulu before too much longer.
- RudeTurnip, on 05/29/2009, -2/+13The two shows you mentioned are on broadcast television and don't require cable tv.
- jstohler, on 05/29/2009, -0/+11PlayOn is probably not popular because you have to pay $40 for it. Everyone likes Boxee because it's free.
- Aleman360, on 05/29/2009, -1/+12Get an antenna, free over-the-air HD and it looks better than the cable signal.
Then get Netflix ($9/month) to supplement Hulu. Also, you can view CNN, MTV, CBS, and other networks online.
Savings? About $40-80 per month. Go to the bar for ESPN or TNT sporting events, more fun anyway. - BobMysterioso, on 05/29/2009, -1/+12your witty changes of their names sure added a lot
- sloppychris, on 05/29/2009, -0/+11Get your ass over to the forums and give them some feedback! ;)
