- hurtstobesoemo, on 10/10/2007, -8/+39You can be a naysayer because it's apple. But I dig the new design.
- meshman, on 10/10/2007, -23/+53I know that when I'm looking for high performance hardware, my first questions are, "is it made from aluminum and glass? Is it slick and will it make me look cool?"
- cusoman, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22Shouldn't this be in the "Apple" category?
- incubowski, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17I am a huge Apple fan and I have one complaint. Why couldn't they have just extended the black that is around the screen all the way down to the bottom. The whole front would be glass, the thin metal rim would be the same all the way around, and then make the apple logo aluminum, as opposed to black, since it would now have black glass around it. Definitely more iPhone-esque. Anyone else think that would look way more bad ass?
I can't use photoshop, anyone want to do a quick mock-up? - djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19The same things were said about the MacBook keyboard when it was first shown.
- cusoman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Then why aren't the "majority" of people buying Macs?
- robdazomba, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12It's the glossy screen. You're seeing your own face.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10It doesn't crash you asshats, they take it down prior to the product announcements.
- mashw, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11I know, I'm a whore, but if I could afford one I'd buy one of those simply because they look nice.
- monkbone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Am I the only one who hates the change to glossy? The main reason I prefer my LCD television to my old one is that I don't have problems with glare from the window reflecting off of a glass screen.
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14they go well with my apartment windows
- gregdigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Sure, here's a mirror:
apple.com - hockey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10The fanboy's don't want the people who have blocked the apple section to miss it because this is such important news
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I actually liked the idea in one of the mock-ups that was floating around, where they left a little more empty space at the top, but the bottom still had a bit more like it does now. That design looked a lot more balanced, although the entire front face was black.
I have to admit though that the more I look at this new design, the more it grows on me. It definitely looks better than the previous model, which looked great, so I guess there's nothing to complain about. I guess I just had higher expectations. The new keyboard is sleek, but I keep looking at it thinking "where is the black to match the iMac?" It's really bothering me, there should be some glossy black border somewhere, it would make it look more solid too. - gregdigg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I don't have photoshop either, I just like to make useless comments.
- zacongpow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+72.8ghz core 2 extreme vs 2.4 core 2 duo, ATI HD 2600 vs nvidia 8600gt... sounds like a performance upgrade to me
- miniml, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Would make more sense with black keyboard keys and mouse.
- bobblender, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7i gave it a shot. i don't know if i like it, but i think it looks a bit better than the black border look. http://ivonline.co.uk/pic/blackimac.jpg
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That keyboard reminds me of the ZX Spectrum.
- flashboy131, on 10/10/2007, -8/+13I like it except for that black border... what is that?
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6No, non-geek 25-year-olds think that way. The average adult could care less if it was sleek and stylish, they want it to be easy, to check their e-mail (and forward the most vacuous of e-mails they come across to their entire address book) and be able to google things. Fanboy wars do not matter to someone who wants something that works. And I guarantee the majority will go for that $600 Dell, HP or whatever other OEMs there are left over the expensive, yet stylish, mac.
- idntunknwn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Judging from previous comments on Digg, people actually really like the MacBook keyboard
- Konstantino, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Holy dupe, batman!
- OdinEye, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Update your criticisms - right clicking has been a mac reality for some time now.
- Bilbobaggins, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It is very similar to the old model in terms of design.
- whistlerpro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It goes down because the whole store needs to be redesigned and configured by human beings. It's not just a list of products.
- imyayo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'll take one!
- ThisIsMyName, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What a crap title: "Sleek New iMacs Made of Aluminum and Glass"
What did they think they were made of before? Fairy dust and crazy glue?
They may as well have titled this "New Macs - Now with more plastic!".
Other than a couple of nice, glitzy pics, the article itself is nothing but a field of comments too, Gizmodo's startin' to suck these days. So's Digg, sadly... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5it gives the illusion of improved contrast on the display.
- monkbone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They can't update the site right away because that would give away the surprise. If they left the old site up, there would be people buying the old hardware. Either way there's a problem, so they just take the whole site down until the announcement's over.
- Radan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well, I personally have always had a distinct hate against all kinds of glossy screens, but to be honest, the reflections are nowhere near as bad as it looks like in the pictures and the screen feels a lot crisper than a normal screen. However, I do agree that I still slightly prefer the non-glossy screens.
- gregdigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Were you directing this comment at someone without any fingers? Because Macs have shipped with multi-button mice for a few years now.
- Radan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4And it hides the camera better.
- maninblac1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm going to reply to my own comment.
$850 upgrade for 4GB of DDR2 667!?!?
Retail price at newegg, OCZ, $285, best price, Gskill $235.
Rip-off, what elese do you need to prove it? - JFetch, on 10/10/2007, -9/+12They look like big iPhones.
- Raptor007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4There were ads?
Try this: http://adblockplus.org/ - corvairkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3A glass covered screen is easier to clean. Ever seen what happens when someone uses ammonia based glass cleaners on a plastic LCD panel?
Not to bash or defend the Mac but what's the point of some PC users paying a premium for LED fans, cold cathode tubes, and fancy aluminum "gamer" cases with windows and laser cut patterns? It's all down to style. Buy what you like. - pak314, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5What ads?
- thatgirlismine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Um, actually you can. The mouse that ships with desktop macs is multi-button with a multidirectional scrollwheel....
- stinky9, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5i just love the black popin' out...real retro...
:D - 5plic3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think it would look better if they ditched the chin, like this:
http://andrewgarber.com/misc/better_imac.jpg - toxicvarn90, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Contrast may look better, but it still kills off the constant and unified design that apple designers are known for. Bet the design team had a bit of an argument over the border.
- ruley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3this is the internet, we're way ahead of you
- Mikecol, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Aluminum and glass are exotic? We've been tossing those materials away after drinking a Coke for years. Do you think anything besides plastic is exotic?
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Builds hype.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ok, a real question deserving a real answer.
My best guess (and this is only a guess) is to provide some sort of transition time before switching to new products. Granted they may only take the online store down for a few hours, but I'm sure they sell thousands of computers each hour. By taking it down for a few hours it alerts customers to the update, and probably prevents thousands of can celled orders from people ordering a product that may become relatively obsolete only minutes later. - OdinEye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm typing right now on the Macbook keyboard that supposedly inspired the new iMac keyboard. I can tell you for a fact that I can type faster on this than my current iMac keyboard, and faster than on pretty much any previous computer.
I barely have to press on the keys, and can glide very quickly across them because of it. Seems ergonomically friendly to me. I guess it depends upon what you mean by ergonomics. - maninblac1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2MMM, lovin' that integrated graphics, yum.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3don't you get tired of repeating jokes that weren't even funny 2 years ago?
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1100% agreed. Something like the Shuttle PC form factor would give the convenience of the Mac Mini but with the power of an iMac (at least). The Mac Mini is cool but the laptop harddisk and lame graphics card doesnt cut it.
