- mDot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24The calls are only free to North America from North America, and that's just through the end of the year.
Many see this as a marketing scheme similar to one drug dealers used.... the first hit is free. - DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22myspace is truly the ***** hole of the internet.

The problem with that mentality is that your boss feels the same way. - mDot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@Cronus6
Spoken like someone who has neither.
That's one of the most short sighted and selfish comments I've read in a long time.
One of the first factors one should consider before picking a home for he and his family is whether or not the areas economy will support his neighbors holding a job. You know what happens when your neighbors can't feed there kids? They do what they have to do to make sure they don't stave, that includes robbing you. - SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Well, I can tell you that just this morning I made a 25-minute call using the free SkypeOut minutes. Before this promotion, I had never purchased SkypeOut minutes; now that I've seen it, though, I'm probably going to purchase some so that I can continue using SkypeOut to contact people. I really enjoy the service, but I would have never known that had they not done this promotion.
- YellowBook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm confused about the assertion from the article that "Skype's flown past MySpace."
I've RTFA and it lists eBay as rank 5 with MySpace at rank 6.
The actual figures which were taken in June 2006 are eBay 77.7 million and MySpace 52.3 million unique visitors. Skype traffic is not listed as a percentage of the total eBay traffic. Since Skype represents only a fraction of eBay's traffic (and the actual percentage isn't stated), how can Skpye be proved to have flown past MySpace?
You can imagine that Skype traffic at best would probably make up no more than 50% of eBay's traffic and in reality probably a lot less since the user-base of Skype at least in the UK is not nearly as high as eBay.
Also,if you look at the average minutes per visitor, on eBay it is 77 minutes and on MySpace it is over three hours (f*** knows why!) again disproving the original premise. - form3hide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8how can we convince a ***** of teenagers to ditch it?
- daonlyfreez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8And as much as eBay sucks at times, Skype rules most of the time, probably the best buy they did...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Skype makes money off a variety of services including providing local phone numbers in foreigh countries, calls made by people outside of the USA etc.
MySpace also makes significant money.
I don't understand how ""free" rules cyber space" when neither service is actually free, someone is paying for them. - Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Even if they don't extend the free North America calls, I'm sticking with it.
I purchased a SkypeIn number about 6 weeks ago (so people can call me on Skype from any land line) for $38 a year with free voice mail.
3 weeks ago, I called my phone company up and told them to match the price or lose me as a customer. I was laughed at. I disconnected my landline service.
I am very happy with Skype. I bought a $60 Uconnect device that connects my home cordless phone to the PC thru a USB port and other than no dialtone, I can't really complain. It's just not worth it to me paying $30-$40 a month for a landline when SkypeIn is $38 a year.
Even if the promotion does end in January, I can easily handle paying 1-2c a minute for my calls out - adding up my usage out in the past month would mean I'd owe about $8-$10 a month at 2c a minute, probably less since I've already converted a few friends to Skype and those calls will be free. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm thinking some sort of Final Solution
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10how does skype make money when giving away free calls?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6eBay owns skype
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Have them all get jobs...
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Have them switch to facebook. It's better, no slow downs, no ugly, more features, and its easier to use.
- fjc8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't forget that Skype is a closed network. There aren't any open-source clients. The protocol is proprietary and uses a proprietary protocol. There is very little ability for Skype to interoperate with other VoIP systems, like the open SIP protocol implemented by many open- and closed-source projects as well as many hardware devices.
Skype competitor Gizmo uses SIP -- http://www.gizmoproject.com/ - ChillyEli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's amazing how much Skype has evolved. I remember using it last year and thinking "This could become huge someday". Glad it did.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3bitch please...
- henryaj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@i440
Stop linking to your MySpace profile you attention whore. - BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Skype is popular worldwide whereas Myspace is mostly an American phenomenon.
- blueRAP, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Oh shut up.
- rrittenhouse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is it sad that im using free SkypeOut as I read this article? =/ haha
- DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they make their money on Skype minutes people buy. I've used Skype quite a bit when I travel to Europe and Asia and it's a phenomenal way to keep in touch when you're away from home. It's quite a good deal compared to using phone cards or the hotel's phone to call.
- donveto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Skype will be releasing an API in the next version, it will propably be still closed but you can add new features to it.
- MikeJo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's all about a catchy headline, in my opinion.
- MikeJo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good God... now I have to worry about emo kids ringing me up and threatening to commit suicide?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Skype is actually easy to use. Unlike Gizmo. And Really, Who cares if it isn't an open platform?
- ChillyEli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thank you for the great relevence to the article.
It really helped me understand EVERYTHING. - JViz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Apples outpace oranges! News at 5!
- MikeJo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Here, I will post a link to a profile of an average Myspace user, to prove how entertaining, exciting, and relaxingly normal and casual Myspace can really be."
Sorry, but It's not "entertaining, exciting, and relaxingly normal". Besides, how can it be both "exciting" and "relaxingly normal"? Not only you're a spammer (a bad one at that) but you failed to prove your point miserably. - techzonezefc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I used Skype and used Skype Out before it was free. Since then, I purchased the VoSKY call center to use Skype with my cordless telephone. The cost of domestic calls have gone to zero cost. International calls are 1/3 the cost via my long distance carrier. This is a gift.
- TheBigGuycouk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I could of bought My Space if i got a loan from the bank and pay it back with the Google money
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thats what I was thinking mDot but im highly skeptic that will work.Maybe "web 2.0" is really different but didnt acouple of companies try that before and bomb?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What did it do in the last year? Aside from make calls free within the USA, it seems about the same to me ...
- bslgw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0丰富
- def1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1wtf is wrong with you?
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Lets all keep in mind who is owning this "new media".
We foolishly let the horse bolt on "my space" and have exchanged our monopolised murdoch media with a monopolised murdoch internet. I'm not sure who owns skype, but in both instances the OS community can make a hell of a lot better product (have you ever tried to use myspace?)
We need a OS myspace that can network flawlessly and integrate seamlessly with myspace... takers? - scubasuit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1skype is great for those that have dkype and calling someone with skype, yeah you can call out to landline and receive calls but it was said that eventhough it is free, it's only free til the end of the year, after that, as said above, them pushers gonna come on ya block and start dealin that e-crack for yo $$$
- jollyroger814, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Proof that hiring hot women as reporters does not generate good reporting or stories.
This story is like comparing apples to oranges. Two completely different services that have nothing to do with one another. Sure the deal to buy Skype was more money than myspace. It has more business ground than Myspace ever will. You are buying a phone service for crying out loud. Its like comparing someone buying AT&T to someone buying Disney World. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"Stop linking to your MySpace profile you attention whore."
haha. Sorry, I won't do it again. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Myspace is an excellent website! Here, I will post a link to a profile of an average Myspace user, to prove how entertaining, exciting, and relaxingly normal and casual Myspace can really be.
http://myspace.com/jeffreestar - mDot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Funny, this hit the front page just as I was opening Skype to make some calls to Texas.
Skype works, and I like it, but their Linux client is lacking. Any suggestions for an alternative VOIP with a client thats updated... ever? - strobe33333, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Wow mDot, your drug dealer gave you stuff for free? Mine must be a cheap ass...
- chrisek, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7By giving free cals SKYPE gains more users. More users = more ads and more profit for skype.
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -43/+5Who cares if they make money...that's not OUR problem.
Frankly I don't care if anyone makes money besides myself and my family.
