- DoubleMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, I just tried sitting my laptop on the floor and discovered I can use the touchpad with my socks on. It's actually pretty accurate, and not that hard to do. It's great, until you have to type.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why would anyone want to surf the net with their feet? We have opposable thumbs for a reason.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Basically, it's a pre-emptive move to prevent Apple from patenting this and creating even more ridiculous hotkeys. It already takes three fingers on two hands to do the simplest of actions on a Mac. A foot pedal is the logical next step.

You don't need some special device, though. I think I'm going to try just throwing my keyboard on the floor and cranking up the font sizes. Then I can lean back and enjoy surfing from the couch or someplace. Any fool can learn to navigate the web without a mouse (firefox plugins help), and if you're not a klutz with your feet (and do wash them regularly), it sounds like a refreshing change of pace.
- tylerdurdenclub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it is for those fetish people. clearly.
- piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3HP files patent for sewing machine computer

- piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Finally....a computer that can harness the awesome power of monkeys.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A year ago, I discussed with a friend if a set of simple foot controllers would make a nice replacement for the modifier keys (Shift, Alt and Ctrl on PCs). You could type a constant flow of letters with your hands and let your feet do the "shifting" (read: capitalization, hotkeys etc). We planned on building a prototype using a MIDI foot pedal and a MIDI interface, but somehow got too distracted with other projects. I still think it would be a nice idea.
- karuberutsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm intrigued by the idea. I know they already have "no hands mouse" available but they seem kinda klutsy. But think about not having to take your hands off the keyboard when you're typing, and some freed desk space! I think it would be good for people too, wouldn't hurt to tone your foot-eye coordination. Then you can play DDR like a psyco.
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'd think it's for IT peeps with messed up wrists and forearms....if this stops thier whining about having a hard day at work, I'm down....*cough*
I just surprised it's taken this long for a patent.
also teh porn factor is pretty damn sweet. - dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, 'cuz I'm going to be really accurate trying to move a cursor around with my feet. I'm sure it will do wonders for my posture too.
- PrayerNeeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This device has been approved by the ministry of silly walks.
- lukes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it'd be sweet if they combined it with a foot spa
- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kudos for your practical approach for the things you read on Digg.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yea I got tired of using those keys when I was doing some 3d modeling, so I took an extra keyboard and built some lego lever things around it. It worked really well and was a lot easier and simpler than using my pinkie to press the shift key. I was going to build a nicer version, but haven't gotten around to it yet...
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I were HP I wouldn't invest too much in this.
- DoubleMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Multi-tasking anyone?
- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, it is exactly the opposable thumbs (but I also know what you mean by that cliche) that makes it more difficult to achieve higher speed of typing. Trying using your thumbs for anything besides the space bar.
- jasonuher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1borninda818
Actually, we use keyboards /because/ we have opposable thumbs, not the other way around. Why would anyone invent a keyboard that required thumbs if we didnt have them? - sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about a use in gaming? You would have to pedal up and down in order to run in the game. Sounds like a good way to get a bit of extra immersion within a game world to me. I once had an idea like this, why, oh, why didn't I think to patent it 7 years ago? Damn you HP!!!!
- tstrong2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually it may be more difficult than you think to get the patent. There are already a number of foot controlled mouse like devices that have been out for a number of years. The first one that I saw sells for about $200.
- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sure, foot control is good. I was using it for ages in my car. Nothing spells "ergonomics for your feet" more than travelling from DC to Baltimore during rush hour. Heck I even might buy a stick shift as my next car. ... as a gift to my worst enemy.
- Sparks123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Can we really use our foot??
- Salmonized, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"OH, de agony of de feet..."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1How about a camera down by the feet to look up at some kitty kitty
