How about just not censoring the internet? Baby steps Australia, baby steps. - gbro, on 11/28/2008, -0/+16Old people don't need internet cafes. They need to be isolated and studied so it can be determined what nutrients they have that might be extracted for our personal use.

- Gizza, on 11/28/2008, -0/+5You heard wrong. It's currently in trial phase and will no doubt fail. All tests so far have shown it to not work. And it will never get passed all the levels of the government it needs to anyways. The Greens have already said they wont vote for it, which is enough for it to not go through.

PS - celotil, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3The IT industry in Australia has been a ***** Joke, not just a joke, for as long as there's been an Australian IT industry.
It's not just a matter of the Government being utterly clueless about how IT works, but the majority of the population don't have a clue either. I've worked as a Tech Support guy for stand-alone PC's, Windows NT and 98 LANS, Windows 3.0 through to Windows XP dial-up and DSL Internet access (and all the usual stuff like Email, the Web, etc), and I've also had to work with some pretty ***** house in-house systems, custom made and sold for far more than they're worth, at two jobs - one currently, called Vantage and built by Epicor (if you ever hear those two words, or even just Epicor, RUN AWAY!).
Practically no-one has a ***** clue around here, and those that do have a clue are usually ignored because they're not well-dressed, slick salesmen - we still haven't passed that stage yet of listening to everything the salesman is pushing, regardless of what the technical guy in the back recommended.
Plus there's the issue of there being no set pay structure for IT in Australia - minimum wage is $12.10 per hour, the standard for all non-classified jobs.
I got out of IT, professionally, about two and a half years ago to become an Assistant Tradesman. I help build water control systems, made from Aluminium and Stainless Steel, for anyone who needs big heavy gates to control the flow of water. I get paid a lot better than I did as an IT guy, and although the work is dirty and often boring, it's sometimes more satisfying - if only they'd let me use the lathe and the mill, I know how they work. :) - sfacets, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3I think we just found the real reason for Cleanfeed.
- farfromhere, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3They're trying to make it look upscale. Or old.
"Ye Olde Internet Cafe" - DigitalisAkujin, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3Honestly based on the many stories I heard about the Australian Internet situation it seems like the whole industry down under is in shambles. The government has no understanding of how the Internet works. They waste tax payer money on projects like these instead of focusing on what really matters: Treating Internet service as a utility! Tax payer money should go to subsidize the infrastructure cost of running lines into rural areas.
Full disclosure: I'm American. :P - barroni, on 11/28/2008, -4/+7They will only use it to torrent Matlock episodes

- linagee, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Australians often put e at the ends of the words that we no longer do. example: theatre
- Barackalypse, on 11/28/2008, -1/+3If they want to get online, let them pay for their own net access or go to a public library.
"Federal Minister for Families and Community Services Jenny Macklin says pensioners are increasingly embracing the internet."
Great, then why is the Government getting involved? - aussiecarlos, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2The Liberals have also said they won't vote for it. Looks like it won't pass! Yay!
- tama00, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2The speed isn't the issue Bigpond has over 400+ exchanges with ADSL2+ enabled. Unless you living in the bush anywhere on the coast should have ADSL2+. Internode, iinet, optus, and some private resellers are putting up adsl2+ in many locations, i hardly live anywhere near the city and i have access to pick from all 3 for adsl2+.
The real issue is price. WHY IS IT SO DAMN EXPENSIVE!!! - aussieNickuss, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2You'll never get a free laptop. Schools get handed a wad of money.....and for every $1000 they're given, they have to buy (at least) one computer. It's up to the schools to decide whether those computers go into classrooms or go to individual students.
- roflomg, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Old folks use the internets?
- aussiecarlos, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2How about the Australian government spend some money to subsidise our outrageous internet costs. $114.95 per month for an 8mbit connection and only 55GB is ridiculous but that's what I pay.

- Cubedude04, on 11/28/2008, -1/+2Incidentally I had to teach my grandparents how to use a laptop yesterday and some funny quotes came out of it:
Grandma:"Oh yes, We pay Google 15 pounds a month for the thing" (Referring to paying an ISP for internet access)
Dad:"You should use Firefox as it has a built in firewall" (On the topic of Computer Security) - peterinjapan, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1GREAT title.
- mr5150, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1what a waste of ***** money....Australia's must have caught the silly mindless spending disease from us.
reality will be every kid and teen hogging it for facebook and chat giving very little time for the Silvers to pay bills and Google symptoms. - celotil, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1@plasmoske,
I know you're digging me in the ribs for that last paragraph, but I threw that in there to cut off the usual return comments of,
"Well if it's so bad, why don't you do something about it?"
I did, I left. Tired of continuously, repeatedly, giving out requested advice to people about what to buy to suit their needs, how to look after it, and where to go for the best deals for Internet access that doesn't have hidden fees and charges - all from a purely unbiased technical stand point -, and then being ignored the moment they encountered a salesman or anyone else with a vested interest in what's purchased, I left.
If you want evidence about how ***** IT is in Australia, simply browse around Australian sites on the web, both governmental and commercial.
Look at the prices that are charged for goods and services, and that people are willing to pay, even when our dollar was nearly on par with the US.
Most of the sites themselves are built in a style that was "high tech" in the late nineties, and barely a handful of commercial sites you visit are going to have a functional store, let alone a decent listing of all their merchandise - the majority of chain stores don't even bother with an inventory-connected on-line catalogue, they just published scanned copies of their latest specials catalogues.
Go look at the flash intensive, zero content web designer's sites. Half the guys I met who were paid twice as much as me didn't have a ***** clue about how HTML and CSS work, they used Dreamweaver and (eurgh) Frontpage and then bitched and complained when they couldn't make it do something that you needed to edit a little HTML or CSS to make work.
I think the best example, sticking out like a sore thumb, is the web site of a company I used to work for in Ipswich. When the site was re-built while I was there, I told everyone that it looked like complete arse in Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Internet Explorer was the only browser it looked, and still looks I guess, right on. I built a duplicate of the home page that looked the same but worked on any browser, sent it to the system admin, and was told that I couldn't possibly know what I was talking about because I was just a technical support guy - yeah, a technical support guy covering dial-up and DSL for customers who used everything from Windows 3.11 to Windows XP, various flavours of Linux, Mac OS X, BSD, and any other setup, as well as providing support for mobile phone users.
This is the web site of an Internet Service Provider, and it's a ***** mess. Check it out on any browser other than IE (maybe IE too, I haven't looked for ages) - http://itel.net.au/ - and you'll face palm. The source is just what you'd expect as well.
Sure, the ratio of know-nothings to actual knowledgeable people is probably similar in the US and the UK, but with our population that means the actual number of knowledgeable IT people in Australia is rather low, and quite a few I've spoken to are like me, so tired of being ***** over by the ***** heads and ignorant majority that they quit their IT jobs and got into something else. A few even saved up their cash and just moved overseas to IT jobs where there was less ***** to deal with.
I honestly don't know if IT will ever really be well represented in Australia. It seems that the majority of people just don't give a flying ***** about what computers could do for them at home or at the work place, content to merely accept whatever slick advertising is pushed on them because,
"Computers are hard and all technical, you know?" - ptFoe, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1another useless waste of tax payers money
these are the same idiots that are funding the "great" Australian firewall BS. - plasmoske, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1do tell us more

- Saphes, on 11/28/2008, -0/+0I'm a senior, and every time I needed to go to the library to use the Internet, there was a line of people sending mail to another country ! One day I waited almost two hours , so I left, went to the bank took money from my retirement account, and bought my own, most seniors don't have that luxury to do that. And the up-side to using the Internet, is that...studies have shown that using the computer, and many electronic games helps keep the brain active, and reduce the early on set of Alzheimer's.
