- cprincipe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+312I hope this is insanely popular, because that will mean more bandwidth for me.
- FyreFiend, on 10/12/2007, -2/+149"Go outside. There are people out there."
I know. That's why I stay in here - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -7/+132I'm going to download all i can while you ***** are off the trackers FTW!
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+129I know what will happen if I participate. I'll be bored.
- Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+104Yeah, too bad when all the torrents are dead tho.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+98Outside isn't in HD! No way I'm gonna look at regular definition reality when I have HD in my lounge room.
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+89OOOOOO, this sounds great! I am going to log on and watch the whole thing!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+74Well I don't want to be an ass about this...
BUT, when you observe the time difference between different countries, Saturday basically lasts for almost 2 days, if you count form the first place that gets the day, to the last place that gets the day... meaning that no matter what, if everyone turned their computer off for a whole day, there will always still be computers on, because here in Australia as i type this, it is 7:05 pm Friday, and in San Fransisco, it is basically only just turning Friday (1:05am)
So no matter what, the end result wont be that there will be no computers on during "Saturday".
Edit: OK well i rtfa a bit more, and now i know this isnt the actual point, but it took ages to type out and find out the time in SanFran so im just gonna leave it all here for you to judge me - thecosas, on 10/12/2007, -5/+73you could always play with your wii
- iamshades, on 10/12/2007, -8/+74outside is so overrated.
- NX910a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65Start your cron engines
- Nanite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61You can pry the internets from my cold dead hands.

You mean...there is a 1st life??? NO!!! - Chesh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50I don't think my boss would be too happy if I decided to not do work for day (of course maybe he shouldn't work me on Saturday...)
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -3/+46Saturday, eh? Well, I'll be gone the whole day anyways, so I'll inadvertently take part in this so-called Shutdown Day!
- mthe0ry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41Can you live without the convenience of a refrigerator? Join me on March 24th in observing Salmonella day, when people around the world will remove all their foodstuffs from refrigerant devices and place them in warm water baths (mayonnaise especially).
- hematochezia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41But... S.T.A.L.K.E.R. just came out. How could you ask me to do something so ridiculous?
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38"I'm going to download all i can while you ***** are off the trackers FTW!"
Wouldn't there be no seeds on shutdown day? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Yea, 50.000 people from 1.000.000.000. internet users will release a LOT of bandwidth. 0.005%
- Michypoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37My existence here on Digg proves that I wouldn't be able to last a day without a computer.
Or a laptop.
Or a TV. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Just leave your torrents* running so we can come back to fully seeded fast D/Ls
*Of legal stuff......Really! - Y0tsuya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Or their pacemaker, or microwave, or car, or TV, or talking toy, or digital watch. Anything with a processor is technically a computer.
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Considering that I have programming and other homework that I need to work on, this is impossible for me. My education requires that I use a computer everyday.
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27A protest to stop using computers? Let's blog about it!

The Shutdown Day Team - slipgrid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26How could I drive anywhere without g-maps!?!
- Kdurrty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28***** that.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21no. impossible. real programmers just start typing with no planning whatsoever.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I've just spend 3 and a half weeks in hospital with no computer. Theres NO WAY I'm going to do so again out of choice!!!
- gamer31, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Hmm, must be an echo in here...
- SpacePirate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Nothing like working in a computer store. ;)
- djames82, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Why did this make it on the FRONT page?
By the way tomorrow is 'No Farting Day' - let's all stop farting for one full day and see how the air will become cleaner and help stop global warming. - LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@ craig - So you believe there are 10,000,000,000 people online? Unless my math is very, very wrong.
- brada33928, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21this is stupid.
- RHEEK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Ironic because one of our big LANs in the area is going on that day and I'm already registered and paid. d:
I'll try to convince everyone there to keep their computers off the entire time, really. - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -1/+17Wouldn't it make a lot more sense for people to shut down their computers at night and possibly while they're at work? I used to have my PC on 24 hours a day, but now that it's only on when I use it I'm using only 2/3 as much energy as before. You can always leave it on occasionally for an overnight download or video render or whatever, but 90% of the time, unless it's a server, you don't need it on when you're not home.
- rholloway, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19"yeah...gonna need you to come in on Sunday, too. Thaaaaanks."
- EVogel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19i hate you..
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15My work may get mad if I come in and start writing code on a steno pad...
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"It is obvious that people would find life extremely difficult without computers, maybe even impossible. If they disappeared for just one day, would we be able to cope?" - this alone is one of the stupidest statements I have ever heard. The entire experiment is useless, but I really find this statement in particular to be absolutely ridiculous. Computers are in no way necessary for anyone's (natural) survival. Computers enable us to communicate over long distances however we please; they enable us to complete complicated tasks faster and more efficiently with greater precision... but that's it. It's important to modern society, it's important to the advancement of science, but it's not important for survival. Anyone who has ever been on a camping trip for even a single night has accomplished the task of not using a computer for a whole day, of not using the Internet for a full day. What difference does it make if a few hundred thousand people do that all at once? A few million? All it means is that they listened to someone that said "do this" and actually cooperated.
When is the last time anyone sat down and seriously though that without the Internet and without their personal computer, there would be no way to cope with life? Are there people out there that actually feel this way? Everything I do for my job revolves around a computer and the Internet. Every day when I go home I use my computer, watch TV, or play video games. Despite that, the only things that actually help me cope with life are friends and family and my own health. Everything else is simply a luxury that I am fortunate enough to be able to afford. Anyone that can't see that is living a sad, empty life indeed. - mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15C'mon, doing genomic computations on the abacus could be fun...
- spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14webtv yo, its all the rage! 100 x 150px resolution. digg looks incredible!
- cr1t, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Lets just all say we did, I'm mean who is going to check up on us.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Seconded. I'm shutting down my entire network, my TiVo, hell, if I get bored I'll disassemble and disconnect power to my PDA (fark those things for not having actual shutdown).
At the very least, It's a chance to calibrate my batteries :D
Tech freedom FTW. - CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Asking this of diggers is like asking the sun not to rise or the moon not to shine.
- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12http://digg.com/world_news/Boycott_International_Shutdown_Day
Boycott it! - repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Excellent observation; you get a cookie.
- m6ack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why should I regress, even for a day, to using my bare hands to dig a trench when a back-hoe is available? Why should I choose a butter knife to threaten an intruder when I have a loaded weapon in my hand?
Computers are tools. This kind of tool can do incredible things -- facilitate global communication, control automobile subsystems, regulate markets, take us to mars, cook food...
This suggestion of a "day without a computer" is banality of the worst sort. Why don't we instead have a "day without a clue?" - Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10lets just hope Google doesn't participate...
