- aerospacemonkey, on 11/12/2008, -2/+33Auction it off? Open-source that sucker!
Shame that it's just wishful thinking on my part. - sockpuppets, on 11/13/2008, -0/+17F-- !! TOOK MY PAYPAL PAYMENT AND DIDNT DELIVER SKYPE!!! AVOID!!!!!!!
- chkdg8, on 11/12/2008, -0/+15"Of all the companies that might make use of Skype, I like the Cisco possibility the best because of its leadership in internet routing and communications equipment, conferencing and telecommunications strength, and finally because the free service would not cannibalize existing revenue streams like it might for the telco's."
Please give it to Cisco because any other telecom would buy it and bury it. - primehifi, on 11/13/2008, -0/+12ebay's gonna be auctioning itself off pretty soon if it don't shape up and stop ficking sellers in the arse.
- reyalp, on 11/12/2008, -1/+12They should remove that nefarious government backdoor, for starters.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+10Skype for sale, paypal only!
- 80hd, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9No *****.
$1700 sale. $100 in fees after Paypal and Ebay raped that *****.
What else is there? Craigslist? yeah right :( - Angostura, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7Too late, much too late. Google has just announced/launched video-chat integration with Gmail
- ethana2, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6I don't know how you generated that formula, but Google should definitely buy skype.
- sockpuppets, on 11/13/2008, -0/+61) Create new account with drugstore prepaid credit card and fake address.
2) Sell your crap. By all means, make it homepage featured. It's free in step 4.
3) Ship your stuff, ethically. People don't deserve to be ***** but eBay does.
4. Don't pay your bill.
5) Repeat till they get a clue.
And you can link any bank account to your paypal with any name- there's no reverse checks on account ID. Withdraw your cash that way. No, your eBay fees can't be forcefully taken from that account. - and303, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6iLoveGoogle + Freebase Crack-Cocaine + Computer = This post
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -1/+6Not likely. They didn't volunteer to add the back door, it was a stipulation of operating in certain countries. No backdoor, no worky here. Use an open source VOIP client like http://www.gnomemeeting.org/ with privacy plugins and theres no problems.
- waldo686, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3i use skype and would be horrified if any telecoms/cable companies acquired them, they already rape everyone with their pricing plans skype was my way to avoid them
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+4Open-sourcing Skype is the only way to go. I have a feeling it would become a lot more popular after that. For one, a lot of Linux users already use it, since Linux is so closely related to the internet anyway (and it's free VoIP). Therefore, after it's been made F/OSS, the purists would join in. Maybe if Google or Firefox found some way to bundle it with software or made it integral into their software, it would certainly be used more then. I mean, Ekiga is great and all, but I love Skype. It'd be a shame not to see it go F/OS.
- Dignin, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Skype, while not what it was, is so much better off in the hands of a non-phone company entity. Love it or hate it, it works and has a great deal of potential. It is still early and as such there will be missed opportunities aplenty, just as there will be chances to further a commodity which are as yet unrealized. Think napster and web 1.0. With the downfall of one brings the rise of many. And as such 2.0 is bursting and the rise of a greater potential brings about so many more greater things..ah, the future! Bring it!
- BuzzLightyear, on 11/13/2008, -1/+4We need a nice free Google auction site.
eBay/PayPal is screwing sellers. - Ninjapope, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3I hope they don't mess with it too much. I like my $2 per month unlimited US/Canada plan.
:| - alexanderhorre, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2It just goes to show how typical best of practice executives can figure out their users. Skype is the best mainstream voIP software for the internet. The main issue is changing the 'old way of doing things.' Skype isn't just phone calls, it's text messaging and chat as well as video for free! I haven't used Ebay in a long time because I don't find the need to auction anything; however, incorporating Skype into EBay's platform easily accessible and recognizable to users will boost Skype usage.
- ethana2, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Then maybe it'd get a linux and mac version that didn't completely suck.
I'm all for it, but I'd be just as happy to see skype go to Google, it'd mean the same thing.
....actually, you know what, that didn't work with sketchup. Still, it would make it likely. - thecoolestguy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Skype has a been a growth area in revenues for Ebay recently. There is no reason why it would sell it off. Its main auction site OTHO has stopped growing.
- thecoolestguy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I don't know what the author of this blog is thinking. Ebay has done a good job in creating business relationships with telcoms around the world in order to make Skype a globally accessible VoIP service, that I've been able to use from dozens of countries. Skype's revenues are growing quickly and he advises that Ebay should sell it!? This is pretty bad strategic advice.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2"The value is in the name bud. "
That's my point exactly numbnuts. Didn't you even read the post?
There are other services out there that have been around for longer, that are superior, that adhere to open standards, that are more secure.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SIP_software
(Skype isn't on that list as it doesn't comply with the open SIP protocol, which prevents you from implementing anti-eavesdropping measures) - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Maybe I'm just a noob, but is there something better than Skype for making international phone calls? I pay 8 euros a month for unlimited calls to landlines, mobiles, includes 3 local numbers so my friends essentially don't get charged to call me, and voice mail.
idk. I think its a good deal, but if there is something better/cheaper/free please let me know. - gabe0463, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1They can't auction it off - some "Nigerian" will just buy it from them; telling them they'll send them a check for $10 million more than the winning bid if eBay will just send $5 million back...
- thecoolestguy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1closed will always be necessary to lead the way. Open source is better at perfecting the ground that closed source breaks. Where there is a profit motive, there“s a way.
- Giga, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1"Serious Money: eBay should auction off Skype"
What is with these supposed economists these days? You should buy low and sell high, not the other way around. With the state of the economy at the moment, now is a particularly bad time to sell. - DanBoodro, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1I'd rather see a company like Google owning such a success like Skype. eBay doesn't deserve the credit until the find a way to better their own service. Skype's really the only thing they've got going for them anymore.
- HonoredMule, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1I'd say it's more the other way around. Closed is better at perfecting the ground open breaks or brings to critical mass. The last mile is usually not technological perfection, but polish to the presentation, usability, and user-level flexibility. As an example, Skype's technology is no better than many alternative VoIP technologies, yet Skype as a complete ecosystem is certainly much cleaner and more well-rounded/functional (at least for the largest slice of the general end-user market).
- rmxz, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Ebay should have used Skype (which they bought but never really figured out what to do with) as a step to popularize micropayments with PayPal currency.
- sockpuppets, on 11/13/2008, -1/+2If eBay can rape someone they will. You're misguided.
- 80hd, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1This is inspiring
- thecoolestguy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Skype is by far the best.
- HonoredMule, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Indeed. Skype is the only closed system that is successfully competing against the open trends of the other VoIP incumbents that will eventually crush the existing cash cows of the telecommunications industry. It is loved by haters of the status quo, even while it positions itself to be the next hated beneficiary of the same status quo on a new medium. Skype the equivalent of Microsoft back when IBM was the recognized and hated evil and MS were the liberators.
closed = controlled = platform for profiteering. In a "best shot to strangle the future market" sense, Skype is golden. - aenone, on 01/20/2009, -0/+0I've just lost a little money on ebay last year.
http://www.mobilebatterydeal.com - inactive, on 11/14/2008, -0/+0"I'd buy THAT for a dollar!"
- expatbrat, on 11/13/2008, -1/+0you sir, do not seem to understand the value of a good marketing platform.
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -7/+5Auction it off? It ain't worth *****. Its just a VOIP protocol, one of many I might add. It's like trying to sell an email company.
What makes them different or gives it perceived value is it's branding and that fact that it is synonymous with VOIP in the minds of n00bs but thats it. Their worth is pure goodwill, and diminishing.
I can't believe those assclowns bought it in the first place. They toyed with the idea of auctions over Skype? "HELLO FRIEND, PLEASE DELIVER TO LAGOS....." is annoying enough in text only. Any douchebag could see that that turkey would never fly. At least when Time Warner bought/merged with AOL there were actual assets and a (then) healthy and predictable revenue stream so the coming disaster was hidden from view, but Skype? LOL. - and303, on 11/13/2008, -3/+1Why am I a user of Skype?
Well because I heard a lot about it and it seems to be the client and service that'll be sticking around the longest.
The value is in the name bud. - iLoveGoogle, on 11/13/2008, -7/+1Let me test how many thumbs down I can get for making this stupid comment:
"Skype + Google = eBay
please give Skype to Google"
