- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11In AIM (or any client that you can log in to AIM with, such as GAIM or Trillian), type +(Number) where number is 1(area code)(7 digit number). For example; an IM to +12223334444 would send a text to (222) 333-4444.
No digg. - Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7s/any phone/any USA phone/
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think some Digg memers are stuck in an infinite loop.
while (1)
{
printf("US only!!? No digg!n");
} - hattan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uhm it is cool to be able to sms any US carrier from one page, but most carriers already have web pages to text your friends via the web. So its nothing you couldn't do before, you just had to visit the cell phone company's website.
Also , its a bit misleading send an sms for free? The person receiving it will still have to pay for it. - thevanin, on 12/20/2008, -0/+3If you want to add this to your bookmarks or bookmarks toolbar with javascript, use this code:
javascript:popw='';Q='';x=document;y=window;if(x.selection) {Q=x.selection.createRange().text;} else if (y.getSelection) {Q=y.getSelection();} else if (x.getSelection) {Q=x.getSelection();}popw = y.open('http://toolbar.google.com/send/sms/index.php','sendSMS','scrollbars=yes,width=450,height=550,top=175,left=75,status=no,resizable=yes');if (!document.all) T = setTimeout('popw.focus()',50);void(0);
It will open a small window to send SMS messages in. To use, just create a bookmark and use that as the URL. - wewa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, I have been using this for about six months.
I used the Firefox plugin that puts a tiny phone icon on the top that you can click and enter the phone and carrier.
http://toolbar.google.com/firefox/extensions/sendtophone/
It does work, and I do use it, but I use it less than before, because:
- its slow, often, I find that people get the text hours later. So I am using www.vtext.com more for verizon customers, since most of my correspondence is to those folks.
- it cannot link a name to the phone number, so u pretty much hav 2 memorize, or make a cheat sheet, or use a shortcut tool like www.shortkeys.com, which i use all the time anyway.
- as the poster mentioned previously, I wish it would figure out the carrier for you.
- when you first set it up and try to use it, it gives you a stupid message that you need to 'copy text' in a browser window, before clicking the phone icon. But then you never need to do this again, and it will work normally. odd. bug?
- i am using opera more now, because of the bad firefox? adblock? memory leak problems that slow down and hang my firefox overnight, especially my favorite site, www.netvibes.com, so i have not been using the google sms service as much now.
- i have not tried the www.teleflip.com as i cant afford to lose message deliveries, can anyone vouch as to its speed, accuracy, and reliability?
Mucho. - bartoncls, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6ANY PHONE? It states "U.S. numbers only"!
- PENIF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hah, Anonymous text messaging! This tool should be priority number 1 after any breakup!
Flood her phone with text messages! Doesn't each text message cost like 5c to RECIEVE? great way to rack up her phone bill too! - GetInLine1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"f Google was really clever, they'd figure out what the user's cell phone provider was and select the proper hostname automatically."
Been done:
teleflip.com - diggidydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sweet, thanks for sharing. I tested it and it works...
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you can send SMS from e-mail here is how:
http://www.tech-recipes.com/instant_messaging_tips939.html - EntrepreNerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is indeed a great service, all be it one I have been using for about 8 months.
WARNING: This service is NOT FREE! If you get charged to receive a text message you WILL get charged by using this service. I was getting hit for $0.10 until I changed my service plan.
One last thing that you will all love if you plan to use this. They have a FireFox Extension for it which can be found here: http://toolbar.google.com/firefox/extensions/sendtophone/ - tpsobeck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4People live outside the US?
Cut the guy a break, he showed us a good website.
Thanks Buddy` - unilogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Any idea if Google tracks these SMS messages? Like they do with any other service they have.
- Tetra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4What's the big deal? You have always been able to send a SMS via e-mail. If Google was really clever, they'd figure out what the user's cell phone provider was and select the proper hostname automatically.
- awhileago, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Quicker than Yahoo's messaging site.
- mikonawa, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1You can also use Google Talk/Gmail to send free SMS by adding [mobilenumberyou'retexting]@chikkatalk.com as a contact.
List of countries and carriers you can send to at the bottom of this page: http://messenger.chikka.com - wanieda01, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I don,t see list of my country. (Malaysia)
Also u can try hxxp://free-sms-from-pc-to-mobile.blogspot.com/ - Steve95613, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Misleading title..And whats with US Cellular?? I've been with them for years now, and while I have been satisfied with my service, they don't ever upgrade or update their services or hardware.Oh wait, i can download crappy ring tones from modtones..big whoop
US Cellular = LAME
This story = LAME - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"US Only No Digg"
Thanks for letting us know - BlueCockatoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The main problem with this is that when you receive the message there's no indicator of who it's from other than google... so anyone can send you these things and basically spam you for free and cause you to have to pay to receive them (if your carrier/plan charges you).
I like the services like teleflip because the message comes from your email address. The Google SMS is ripe for abuse, I think. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lol comment
- launchpadtt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2US Numbers. Not any number. still useful but get the headline straight. please.
- JimmyDushku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just sent 500 texts to this kid i dont like. funny thing is he just called complaining and i denied it all.
- JJHoover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tested my T-Mobil with most of the methods discussed here.
Worked on all of them including google, But
Using GAIM with an AIM / ICQ login was superior because:
1. No need to identify phone company - Gaim and AIM/ICQ figured it out for itself from the telephone number.
2. Sent straight - clean format - text message - not e-mail from/to/subject redundant info.
3. Sent as text - not through the carriers verbose - and costly - IM interface.
4. Was free - since incomming text messages are free - and IM messages are charged.
5. The only country code tested was 1 - but that may not be a limitation because:
5a. The U.S. Senate says anyone who can get here in the next five years - and can forge a note from a friend - can live in the U.S., and,
5b. Speaking English not needed to receive amnesty and thousands of dollars in bonuses ( or earned status change for the politically correct ). - onebigword, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to pay $0.10 to receive a SMS message. There is a service that lets you schedule reminder text messages.
http://bitbomb.com - Eschel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's amazing how many people take it as a personal slight that he mistakenly said "to any phone"! Get over it. Geez. It was probably an honest mistake. And this is a cool feature that Google is offering. Yes, yes, for those of us ABLE to benefit from it...
And maybe it will be expanded with time. - pfilias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is also part of their start page, www.google.com/ig. To add it: Click Add Content in the top left and then Add More Content.
Pretty slick. - Menoats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree I got USCellular its lame as hell. I tried AIM for it and its slow lagging never updates my buddylist its horrible.....but as a phone and price they're the best.
- LucerinRed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is awesome, because now I can send messages to random skanky girls that say "hey, I know it's been a while, but I thought I should let you know that I think you might wanna get tested, later"
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTF is the point of saying no digg? along with "DUPE," "fanboy," and "noob" people on here waste so much time commenting for no reason.
- Chromoly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From lifehacker.com

And if you have email access on your cell phone, but are charged for outgoing SMS, this might be a cheaper way to text with friends.
Instructions are posted at http://www.essistme.com or http://tinyurl.com/y9kgmc - thetzfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0text 4 free beats the crap out of all these other sites.

My provider wasn't there, and I sent them an email, and my provider was added literally within 24 of my request via email. They also have a pretty sweet myspace code. - tolkein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are lots of free SMS services on the Internet, e.g. http://www.pranks.biz

- Wantednz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nobody seems to have noticed but it's not ANY number. It's US only. No Digg because of the title.
- MizzChrisBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google needs to have a field for you to put your phone number so that the person can know who sent the message
- Erroneus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeee got to try the inaccurate function :D
USA is not ANY! - zephyr08, on 04/11/2009, -0/+0"US numbers only",
