- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56Conrad had no qualms about accepting gifts from Jack Abramoff.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40This is just too rich. A Senator named Burns. 10 to 1 he has an aide named Smithers.
SMITHERS! What is this thing!
Well, is an iPod sir.
Well what good is it?
It came pre loaded with all sorts of resource materials on technology, and ....
NONSENSE. I have my Victrola, what good is this! Smithers, I need more CASH. Get on the phone, start the extortion, no, I mean fundraising again. My campaign warchest only has 15 million. I need at least double that. Those record company fellows seem like nice chaps, and they have expensive suites. I want $50,000 from them for my PAC at least. And I want some more groveling.
Yes sir, sorry sir, groveling sir...... - Scopitone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Peasant! He only accepts contributions worth at least five thousand dollars!
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36That senator is a real asshat! The generally uneducated population of the US elects some very corrupt people.
- IPac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26It is entirely legal. We sent the iPod to Senator Burns' campaign as an in-kind contribution. We expect the iPods to be used for campaign activities like previewing their campaign commercials (we did send video iPods), looking up their voter files or donor database, keeping track of their campaign events, or simply as a portable hard drive to move and back up data.
- nebunezzar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24The article states all the proper paperwork was filled out and the gift was paid for by regular citizens of the US. It's not that it's illegal, he's just an old technophobe.
- hungarianhc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21no if you read, their iPod comes preloaded w/ lots of campaign material and a bunch of stuff that makes it totally legal. It's been approved.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Welcome to Washington. Where prostitution is legal, but spelled p-o-l-i-t-i-c-s.
- drum_bum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Check out this weeks Time Magazine. They have an article about Americas 10 best Senators and the 5 worst. He is ranked as one of their top 5 worst Senators, what a surprise.
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Geez, people. The iPac server was just recovering from the Digg about the DMCA extension, and now this? Y'all can be brutal.
- hyberion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18You know what I don't understand is this.
Corporate sponsored interest groups can give him up to $59,000 dollars and that's just fine. And when he then goes and votes for *their* interests instead of those that elected him, that's ok.
A grass roots group sends him a $400 dollar piece to technology to make a point, and he's ethical for returning it.
When we finally realise that our entire system is based on "buyer" and "seller", and that our voice and our participation in the system is not wanted nor desired.
We are to shut up, be good consumers, and do what we're told. Not to speak up, not to express ourselves, to be good mute citizens. We are not to question, not to challenge, and not to stand up.
They work for us. They owe us, not the RIAA, the MPAA or any other group.
We have forgotten this. And they are in no hurry to remind us.
Sorry. Wandered off topic. I return you now to your debate, already in progress. . . - electricmime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Tonage: "Dude returns an Ipod and he is corrupt? Give me a break. Perhaps the fact that it could possibly be considered an illegal gift may have something to do with the return? Just maybe? Oh no, if someone doesn't do as you would, they must be corrupt."
In his wikipedia article, it says he took over $136,000 from Abramoff (and Abramoff flew two of his staffers to the Super Bowl) apparently he (or his staff) also edited his wiki taking away any negative aspect of it. I'd say he is pretty damn crooked. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16http://ipaction.org.nyud.net:8080/blog/2006/04/conrad-burns-returns-ipod-swears-off.html
coral cache...
What the hell is wrong with him? He got a free ipod and returned it? Yet he still accepts thousands from the entertainment buisness? - BloodyRids, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@ geekee
Scroll down the page and look at the comment by "IPac."

If the Ipac website wasn't down I'd give you a direct link. Your comments were ignorant. I just call it as I see it. If you want to blame someone for your incompitence, blame your momma. - BloodyRids, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17@geekee
Try doing some research before you make ignorant comments. - SoCalDissident, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17As if there's any alternative
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'd like him to return the other gifts he's recieved. $59k worth.
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Clearly the offense was in giving a gift not valuable enough for a Senator to receive!
- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It makes me so sad that even our senators are ignorant.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I say someone should go and forcibly give him that iPod.
I hear that there's space between the liver and the navel.
"Peasant! He only accepts contributions worth at least five thousand dollars!"
... and then he's out of office. - ElGuano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Kinda wish his campaign spokesperson said, "If the senator wants $59,000 from the entertainment industry, he'll buy it."
- calzone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9JimXugle: I say someone should go and forcibly give him that iPod.
Yeah, an iPod suppository. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11try living in montana where a bunch of dumbasses vote for him every election.
- XRay777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Just another a-hole. No one should be surprised.
DONATE or JOIN IPACTION!!!
All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing.
Edmund Burke - clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think that was a joke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It may not get you reelected, but it can help. See, I believe the action was to help the senator see the point in owning an ipod, and what real fair use should be. This, my friend, can win you votes from the tech/audiophile crowd.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If anyone would like to contact Senator Burns - you can visit his official site. http://burns.senate.gov/public/
Anyone contacting the Senator should remember, that - even though he may be a technophobic asshat - you should still address him with respect and not use long words that he can't understand. Also, avoid using smileys or any internet-abbreviations. He wont understand those either... - johndi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think he gave it back because he's too stupid to use it. I mean hell even children figure an Ipod out. How embarrassing that must be.
- CableCarrier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Geekee, it's been mentioned several times already, but the gift was LEGAL. All of the necessary paperwork was filled out, and it was 100% legit.
- N3wtR0ckn13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7if there are two people i can blame more than jack vincente and sonny bono for digital millenium act i'd like to know. this whole thing is just getting way outta control and unbelieveble. is there anyone in congress who isn't as corrupt and flagrant about it anymore.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5> meski wrote: "try living in montana where a bunch of dumbasses vote for him every election."
I'm in the same boat. I live in Utah where I have a better chance of growing wings and flying to the moon than I do of seeing Orrin Hatch (R), who is a HUGE friend of the entertainment industry, voted out of office. Just a reminder that Hatch is the guy who made headlines some time back by saying that the entertainment industry should have the right to dig into our computers and blow them up if they find copyrighted material. - smc44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@geekee Do not speak of ethical again until you have majored in Philosophy with a specialization in ethics. In a society built on fear and lies, how could you EVER suggest their practice is unethical? Ethics are determined by the society. I will say no more.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@geekee
WTF? Did this backwoods Montana senator knock your mom up 13 years ago - resulting in you?
Stop being a belligerent troll and go join one of the many militias that are based in Montana. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well please don't do it again! :)
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No you're doing just fine. Go on. :-)
- crackSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8How is a gift illegal? (serious question)
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, I think I heard about this on TWiT. Crazy world and its politicians.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12 It seems to me that all of these congressmen are just old ***** who want to ***** over the younger generation because they can't get the young hotties anymore.
The reason I say this is because they did the same ***** when I was younger, I'm 49 now and I think this childish ***** by whiny 60+ year old brats holding public office that weren't raised right has got to stop.
I personally don't give a ***** about what the younger generation does, as long as it isn't violence toward other living things.
To bad the 1960's hippies that are running the country now are nothing more than their previous generation.
I hope you youngsters can fix it, but most of you are to busy writing trolls and twiddlin' your dingus to be bothered.
*sigh* - Genma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ignorance is bliss... but don't kid yourselves, by accepting that gift he has to:
a) admit the truth in what his contributors are lobbying for
b) acknowledge the issue from an opposing perspective
c) grow a conscience
d) face change
think about the sheer amount of reality IPac has forced upon him. why should he face reality when he has so many important decisions to make? it's just too much. - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Why am I not surprised he's a republican?
- Junel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He's just trying to save face and get some press so he ensures further contributions. An Ipod is a legal piece of technology that can be used 100% legally, until of course the RIAA sues Apple. :|
- Prufrock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I live in Montana as well. . . Burns isn't re-elected entirely out of ignorance. At this point he is a senior senator, and sits on the senate appropriations committee.
That is the sad reason he will most likely be re-elected. Many believe that he is more able to bring money to our small-population state than someone new. Even in the face of corruption, some see this as a compelling reason to re-elect.
Is he a buffoon? Yes. Is he corrupt? Likely. Will people generally vote their personal interest above their morals? We'll see. - dysan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3According to wikipedia "Burns has been singled out as one of the most vulnerable senators facing re-election in 2006."
Good choice IPAC, good strategy to target him instead of a more entrenched senator. Hopefully it will work and make IPAC more visible. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Maybe he didn't want to have to install iTunes on his computer and have it take over the entire computer so he had no use for it. Maybe he has a Creative or iRiver player and has absolutely no need for an inferior alternative.
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ipaction.org seems to be down (or very sluggish) for the moment for me. I'm guessing it should be up momentarily. In the meantime, here's a corresponding news article:
http://www.missoulanews.com/News/News.asp?no=5650 - MediaShipper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They talked about this on TWIT the other day. I'm sure Future Inmate Burns listens to TWIT.
- smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget to include all the original CDs in there too.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Mirror in case ipaction.org goes down again:
http://trogdoor.googlepages.com/conrad-burns-returns-ipod-swears-off.html - jaiwithani, on 10/12/2007, -16/+18There's always Canada...
- rockingrhino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The good news is Sen. Burns is in some serious trouble. I would suggest supporting whomever he faces in Dec.
Here is a site about "buying" Burns.
