- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -12/+119Because it'd upset his friends in Hollywood. Right. Nothing to do with TPB being about 1.998 BILLION DOLLARS SHORT.
As for the rumour they're still looking for an island ... what a waste of money. Why don't they do something for their users and remove the ads for a few months instead. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+62Why buy an island when you can buy a barge, park it in international waters, and uh...stretch 150 miles of fiber optic cable to shore?
- Hiki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+60Selling a nation and offering asylum in a nation are two veeeeery different topics.
- yourmom, on 10/12/2007, -8/+65im in ur territorial waterspace offerin asylum to ur haxxorz
- Arbus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41I'm declaring war on Sealand. I have a dinghy and a crossbow. Let's dance.
- Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39Im pretty sure that rumour is false. I believe that they did basically admit it was a big publicity stunt(No I dont have any proof of this).
Either way, their whole project went down the tubes. At least it gave birth to the Free Nation Foundation (look it up) - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36If the U.S.A. goes to war with sealand then for once the enemy will not only lack an armed service but they also lack a population so we can't lose the peace this time around.
- TheCash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Like the Prince has friends. Where were his 'friends' when his country caught fire?
Sealand has been pathetic ever since they removed the gun mount. What did this McKinnon guy hack anyway? - eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19The problem with islands and even sealand (and the real reason imho that TPB didn't get it) is that the mafiaa and their cronies would have the local government chop the cable at the point of entry.
If TPB wanted to do something meaningful, they should do what the mafiaa does: buy some politicians. - Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Well, their country status is a bit more complicated than that. As it started, Britain just let them pretend to be a country. However, when Sealand was hijacked, the German (or was it Austrian) government did negotiate with then for the release of their citizens, lending them some degree of legitimacy.
After that incident, the British government sent a Navy ship to "retake" the island and end the bad publicity. The people on Sealand fired warning shots off the bow of the Navy ship, and they backed off. This also lent legitimacy to their claims, since it would be fine for their navy to forcibly retake the island from British citizens, but not from another country.
So, basically, there is way too much paperwork for any country to try and go there, so they don't. - UndyingShadow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Its not even a real nation, its a former British piece of property. You have to have either of two things for a nation, a formidable enough military that causes other nations to leave you alone due to their own casualties, or the recognition of other countries. Sealand has neither.
I have this feeling 3 or 4 guys with regular civilian grade guns could take over Sealand if they wanted. - 88Chevy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20this is completely retarded.
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18That's really fine though. It'll be the final nail in Sealand's technical independence. They're currently in British territorial waters as it is. They weren't always. The structure was made by the British military as well. I have a feeling that if they try to offer this guy asylum, they're going to be shocked when the British come and get him anyway. Until now there's been no real reason to bother with their "micronation."
- podgey22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16NASA
- xJVz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15So now they're going to upset their friends in the US. Bad idea...
- Puppetfunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Sealand isn't a recognized country. Britain just let's him have the platform because what else could they do with it? If they started international trouble they could probably drop a grenade on top of the place and blow up the whole country. I wish to one day have my won Micronation. That would rule.
- dugbay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Its sealands property. They can do whatever the hell they want with it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Fiber optic wire isn't cheap??
$200 for a quarter mile (400m) of it? How is that not cheap? Mind you, that's only with two strands. - scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I'm with you. I'm so tired of them acting like they're a country and thinking they have special rights. When you're completely dependent on everyone for everything.. you aren't an independent country
- pinchduck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@somedigger5
It's not American extradition *****, it's British. The U.S. has requested extradition, but who is actually processing it? Who has the guy arrested? Who is getting ready to put him on a flight to the U.S.? You talk as if the U.S. is in Great Britain, operating their legal system. The guy, by his own admission, is guilty of breaking into systems in the U.S. The U.S. is therefore trying to prosecute him. That has nothing to do with Bush, the Iraq War, or your deep hatred of all of the above. Your rant is silly, it is Great Britain that is actually performing the extradition. Assuming you are a British Citizen, why don't you contact your MP and try to get the extradition stopped? Hold a rally. Have a benefit marathon. Sponsor a bake sale. Do something within your own country. Yelling at American prosecutors for doing their job is irrelevant to your extradition process and a useless waste of time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"allegedly", of course. Just because the US gov't says you're a "terrorist" or a "hacker", doesn't _necessarily_ make it so. Look at how many people have been let go from Guantanamo Bay *after* they've been waterboarded and had large objects inserted into their rectums.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9He didn't sell it to Pirate Bay because they didn't have nearly enough money. Period.
Anyone who thought that they were really going to buy it is deelusional. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10why is this guy getting dugg down? i'm seriously lol'ing @ 'george ***** and his ***** brigade' :D :D :D
- iFelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I have this feeling 3 or 4 guys with regular civilian grade guns could take over Sealand if they wanted."
They did once and then it was taken back.

In 1978, while Bates was away, the Prime Minister of Sealand, Alexander G. Achenbach, and several German and Dutch citizens staged a forcible takeover of Roughs Tower, holding Bates' son Michael captive, before releasing him several days later in the Netherlands. Bates thereupon enlisted armed assistance and, in a helicopter assault, retook the fortress. He then held the invaders captive, claiming them as prisoners of war. Most participants in the invasion were repatriated at the cessation of the "war" - fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43 or 4 girl scouts with stale cookies could conquer the country.
- unknown.root, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He can hide at my house, I've got an extra room.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4because, if everybody started to download from usenet and they got the correct files everytime, then less people would have their systems trashed by malware (aka limewire) and i'd have less systems to 'fix' for around £35/hour.
;) - TexanPsycho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4At first I thought it was like a group of hackers hoping to take over the world with legit hacking. Now I know it's Gary McKinnon and I'm all for it. Long live Gary!
- thesmiler, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Gary McKinnon logged into unsecured computers using usernames with blank passwords, and didn't really do anything other than that. He's being extradited to the US to face their courts, which will probably give him 60 years in jail.
The Pirate Bay releases copyrighted videos/music/books/software free to the public, to the detriment of the creators. While they're mostly ripping off companies, they still take money from people who have put a lot of effort into what they make.
Which would you defend, given a choice? - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2coresnake - now be fair dude, Tony Blair has worked hard for that number one spot.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blair and his cronies are as bad as Bush, they just sound more educated in doing it which perhaps makes them more dangerous in one sense. The aforementioned Reid is a serial freedom hater.
- Kevinb1577, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3because everyone has adblock and doesent see the ads..
dont be ignant' - lhnz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Stop being so pretentious. Why do you want usenet to be so "secret"?
- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So because the US economy would completely collapse if all of our oil imports ceased, that makes us not a country?
Not that I don't agree with you, I just don't agree with how you said it. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just create your own. The nation of lovely is based in the rulers flat in London.
Another possibility is to get a decent broadband line and set up a cyber nation. Second Life has gone OSS. Or you can use actual modern technology. - PonyGumbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> They could at least fix-up the place. There's a website with semi-recent pictures and the place is a gross and disgusting dump.
There was a fire that pretty much gutted the place. The cost to rehab is one of the reasons they're selling.
Sealand has always been about fantasy. Havenco is much the same. - eliasg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They could at least fix-up the place. There's a website with semi-recent pictures and the place is a gross and disgusting dump.
- anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personal Computer World is also reporting the story: http://www.pcw.co.uk/personal-computer-world/news/2188690/north-sea-state-offers-mckinnon
So it could be true...ish - iMyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where's Shamu?
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1right.. ok well let me change my reason... a country that can be put into the ocean by a saw is not a country
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sealand falls within British waters. If they really wanted to the government could take it but we aren't arseholes in Britain and wouldn't benefit from it so may as well leave them play prince.
- Jozer99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It falls within British waters NOW, but it did not when it was founded, and they were already (arguably) considered a country before GB expanded their national borders from 3 nautical miles from the coast (which does not include Sea Land) to 12 nautical miles from the coast (which does include Sea Land). After GB extended their borders to encompass Sealand, Sealand extended their borders to encompass several towns on the coast of England.
- duhblow7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spending any money centralizing TPB is a bad idea. They have have their own sovereign "nation" all the way, but doesn't centralizing yourself go against what the BT protocol was built around. If you put yourself on an island then if any one part if your infrastructure was taken out you'd be screwed. BT is decentralized for a reason, learn from it.
- Daole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Havenco Limited website (the internet host for Sealand) states "No hacking including port scans or network vulnerability testing, distributing viruses, phishing sites." as one of their ONLY 5 internet regulations. There seems to be a break in the system.
- pengu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is gazillions a mathematical term?
- wrestlingnrj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Use Firefox + Adblockplus. Hey look all of the ads are gone.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1He did go into goverment computers, try to find out about stupid yet possibly top secret info (if there even was any)
is it ok for you to break into a bank vault not take anything and just say you wanted to see the inside no
because its breaking in
its much like unreasonable search and sezuire
the guy broke in to a computer
searched around in things he wasnt supposed to
and now he is being punished - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3"""If the U.S.A. goes to war with sealand then for once the enemy will not only lack an armed service but they also lack a population so we can't lose the peace this time around."""
Yeah, that's what we tell ourselves. In reality, the great military minds in charge would probably spark off the campaign by trying to "evaporate the surrounding sea with bombs to prepare for a land invasion" or something. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2to find out about ufos
UFO's
the most stupid and illegal thing ever to happen
a british dude hacking us gov computers to find out about ufos - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4"""...America wont even give us an equal extradition treaty....We help you guys out every ***** year
...all we get in return is "give us this guy, give us that guy" well ***** you, Im fed up of this country giving up citizens to America without even seeing a judge"""
Those parts are very fair points, and to a certain extent yeah, it goes to show that you can completely destroy your countries' international relations, sacrifice lives and do all sorts of difficult things, and America will not even give you cursory respect. -
