- Tralobyte, on 10/18/2007, -7/+23Did I just see "Microsoft" and "free" in the same paragraph?
- Falldog, on 10/18/2007, -0/+11Looks just like a simplified Sharepoint.
- ZiggityZhang, on 10/18/2007, -0/+9Read it closely. "The company made its most recent major announcement about the online collaboration suite that integrates with Office at the end of last month."
It's free assuming you already have Office. - Gunslinger99, on 10/20/2007, -1/+10I hope that it integrates with Office 2007. I would love to work on a doc at home, upload it to Office Live Workspaces work on it online from another location then finish it home. All with the same formatting, fonts, ect. I have used Goodgle Docs and it is great, but it doesn't have nearly as many options as Office and isn't as easy to import into Office or from Office, especially Excel docs. It will be great to have the same format and options at home, and from any computer in the world.
I think this can be huge, Office is the #1 selling (non pre-installed of course) office suite for both Windows and Mac. With so many people using it, if it is implemented right it can be huge. - freezerburn666, on 10/18/2007, -2/+8for full functionality open the donkament in its original application :/
- whisperedlie, on 10/18/2007, -1/+7yeah, ok we get it. they are a software company that charges money for their products.
let's also remember they provide quite a number of free services and software packages. outnumbered by the services and software they do charge for? yes, of course; they are a business after all. - Gunslinger99, on 10/19/2007, -1/+7First off isn't that what all companies do? You see something someone else does, put your twist on it, or fill the gaps they don't fill? Find me a completely original product or service that isn't at the least inspired from something else? Even the iPhone, which uses new technology is still a phone and mp3 player when you get down to it. I would never accuse them of "repsonding or mimics something from another compay" but using your logic, thats what they did.
What about these innovations...
-XBox Live-What console gaming system had an online community for all its games?
-Wireless Controllers standard-What other console offered wireless controllers standard with their systems?
-Downloadable games, content, movies ect for a console system?
-WiFi in a portable music player?-Granted it was limited in its use, but still more than anyone else
-Firmware updates for a previous product to use the features from the next gen-Coverflow for my 5G or 5.5G iPod anyone
-Readyboost-What other OS uses flash memory in the USB to act as a cache?
These are just a few of the innovations at the consumer end, there are probably numerous others under the hood of their products. - PRlME, on 10/19/2007, -3/+8This is not Microsoft love speech, I promise. I just edited a paper on Office 2007 on my auntie's 1Ghz, 256mb HP Celeron computer. I used the program about 100 times before, the only problem I have is the start up time cause the computers ram is so low. Anyhow for the one hundredth and one time I was able to start the program do my work, save and exit. I love the fact that it runs faster then older versions, and I dont have to hunt in the sub-menus for things. Moral of the story...Thanks Microsoft. It's 2007, you did a good job on improving your code in your resent version of Office.
P.S I would also like to thank Open Office for turning up the heat on MSOffice, I really do think thats the reason MS changed up Office so much. - RichG13, on 10/18/2007, -1/+6It is annoying. Vista does away with most of the "My"s, hopefuly we'll see that become the trend with the rest of MS apps.
- Gunslinger99, on 10/18/2007, -4/+8Where do you get that? I remember reading that one of the requirements is IE6 or Firefox 2.0, now it may not work on Opera, Safari, Camino ect, but who really cares, they are less than 10% of browsers anyway.
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -1/+5I use many of Windows Live services (Favorites, Spaces, RSS aggregator, SkyDrive, etc.) and all on Macbook Pro with Firefox.
- Christbait, on 10/19/2007, -3/+7it's better than being another iSheep
- fkr3, on 10/19/2007, -5/+8Fortunately most people do have Office. Even if a bunch of digg users will now unarguably prove "most people" don't have office because they are satisfied with Open Office or pretend to be satisfied with Google Apps.
- waxdart, on 10/19/2007, -1/+4That's great, but it doesn't address the needs of teams in disparate physical locations.
- potterboy, on 10/18/2007, -2/+5This might be the next revolution in online corporation.
- BarisC, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3check out their FAQ: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officelive/FX102 ...
How much does Microsoft Office Live Workspace cost?
It’s free. No purchase or credit card information is required. Microsoft Office Live Workspace may eventually include advertising, but we’re still testing different designs. At some point, we may also offer additional features or services at a charge. - Darcy, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Office Live isn't an Office replacement.
- etx313, on 10/18/2007, -2/+5It impressed your mom.
- waxdart, on 10/18/2007, -2/+5Thank christ.
- PRlME, on 10/18/2007, -3/+6impressed me
- ePlus, on 10/18/2007, -1/+3Hopefully it is going to be cross-platform!
- BarisC, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Just to address the browser support question: Office Live Workspace will work on IE & FF on PC and FF on Macs.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officelive/FX102 ...
From FAQ:
What are the system requirements?
You only need an Internet connection and a Web browser.
Office Live Workspace works with the most commonly used browsers, including:
* Internet Explorer 6.0 or later on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista
* Firefox 2.0 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista
* Firefox 2.0 on Mac OS X 10.2.x and later
Some features may require a browser that supports ActiveX. - mlostracco, on 10/19/2007, -7/+9I wish Microsoft would stop putting that juvenile "My" in front of everything, like it's from a grade 3 class. My computer. My documents. My workspaces. My templates. My workbook. My pencil case. My lunchbox.
- BenWang, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Dugg because it supports OS X. Too bad its Firefox only. I predict there will be Safari and iPhone support in the near future.
- OutrightLie, on 10/18/2007, -1/+3Coming from someone who has had to actually deploy Sharepoint 2003, I couldn't agree with you more.
- Darcy, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Office live isn't an alternative to Office, or a competitor to Google docs. It's just a collection of services and tools, that work alongside MS Office, and is targeted towards small businesses.
Here's a vid http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=2166 ... - waxdart, on 10/19/2007, -2/+4What a nice breath of fresh air. For probably 90% of the clients I've done SharePoint implementations for, _this_ is what they actually wanted. A much simpler interface for exchanging and collaborating that doesn't ask the userbase to understand what the hell a "webpart" is.
- FutureGuy, on 10/18/2007, -1/+3Have you used Google Docs? Its just a glorified rich text editor, its not even 5% of Word, if anything it will drive people to Word. Its collaboration is what is Key and with this MS give the best of both worlds.
- phantom_mullet, on 10/19/2007, -2/+4I don't really see the problem here. Competition drives innovation. Google most likely began developing online office tools in order to compete as an online alternative to Microsoft Office. As a result, Microsoft took notice and realized that Google was encroaching on its territory, so they are trying to innovate in order to come up with a superior product. We can certainly expect that Google will further this innovation chain, making a better product for the end user. It's really win-win for the consumer.
- latova, on 10/18/2007, -1/+3I didn't say there was a problem, I was just stating their motivation, in this case, to compete with google.
- mlostracco, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2"My Workspaces" is in the screenshot.
- Darcy, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1It's probably not aimed at you, unless you're a small business.
- BarisC, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1To confirm - Office Live Workspace will work on IE & FF on PC & FF on Mac:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officelive/FX102 ...
Internet Explorer 6.0 or later on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista
Firefox 2.0 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows
Vista Firefox 2.0 on Mac OS X 10.2.x and later - uberfu, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2you're imagining it_
- AlmostEvil, on 10/19/2007, -4/+5Looking at the images, i'm guessing just like sharepoint it will only really work in Internet Explorer. Which negates the entire point of having something in a web browser if it only works on a single operating system, they may as well had just released a version of Office that saves your stuff online or something.
- Gordin, on 10/19/2007, -3/+4It's gone in Vista unless you are thinking about My Crosoft.
- MWeather, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1iDisagree
- brandvegn, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Awesome. Still, I have opened up Office 2000 a thousand times and it worked. This happened the first time I ever used 2007. Come on. I agree with you. Microsoft has good products, but there was no other reason for the freeze. I only had Office 2007 and whatever programs were running in the background which probably included virus check and the various chat programs the guy uses. Nothing else was "running" in task manager. It really isn't hate speech. I promise, but the ***** didn't work. It may have been because my client was using an older version and it was in "Compatability Mode", but once again, it was a doc file. Microsoft's own proprietary file system, albeit, not the new improved docx, which I have no idea why they changed to. I am obviously upset about it though. It could have potentially lost a client for me and that is not what anyone wants from a program in 2007. So, no it wasn't hate speech, but man did that make me step away from 2007. My 2000 is looking old though, so I am so far pretty stoked about OpenOffice.
- vanscott, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1So you're complaining about opening word to share a word file?
To me it looks like net-meeting was moved inside the browser, much like a web-ex session. - MWeather, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Yeah. I'm sure Microsoft won't rely on ActiveX.
- MWeather, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Most people don't buy office suites costing several hundred dollars.
- BenWang, on 10/19/2007, -1/+1I'm pretty sure it would work with IEtab / IEview type extensions.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/142 ... - Woecip, on 10/18/2007, -8/+8No love for Firefox. Oh well.
- Topher06, on 10/18/2007, -2/+2Even if it doesn't work on FF, the point of this app is office collaboration, meaning that everyone in the office will run IE if thats the way to access this application and the office wants to use it. I don't think Microsoft cares about collaboration in a non-office environment where people might be running FF, opera or IE. However, a lot of companies kind of banned IE in the office so this might hurt adoption of this service if FF is not supported.
- trevorbadly, on 03/13/2008, -0/+0First off, remember that this stuff is Microsoft. We all know how Microsoft stuff works. If you want a similar product, with iPhone support, go to http://www.hyperoffice.com and try out HyperOffice. They'll let you try it for a month free and it's tons cheaper than sharepoint
- mikeenriquez, on 10/31/2007, -0/+0It is free.
The catch is that some editing features require you to open documents using Office. - brandvegn, on 10/19/2007, -2/+2yes, but I followed with a comment on good design. Balanced.
- conz, on 10/19/2007, -0/+0In other words:
No Linux support.
No Opera support.
No Safari support. - BarisC, on 10/19/2007, -1/+1To address another question re: How much does Microsoft Office Live Workspace cost?
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officelive/FX102 ...
From their FAQ:

Hands down the best program out of the suite, no other program even comes close to it.
