Wikiasaurus Rex vs. Googlociraptor vs. Tricerahoo? - DarkDays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Looks a bit messy..
- simonwright, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15There's a huge amount wrong with that design. Most unforgivably, it copies an extremely well known interface design schema (which is fine) but implements it incorrectly (apply hammer directly to forehead). The *useful* results are shown in a similar way to Google's sponsored links!!
- iSamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Looks a bit...googly...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I hope this means Wikipedia will finally get a useful search feature.

Looks a lot like Google's results page, doesn't it? Time to search, highlighted links, sponsored things in a box over there... - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8From search.wikia.com: "The TechCrunch story is also wrong. This project has nothing to do with the screenshot they are running, and this search project has nothing to do with Wikipedia."
Buried as inaccurate. - ralphie81, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9BearOwned,
The top ones aren't sponsored links, they are wikipedia links (see simonwright's comment). I guess you could argue that those are sponsored by wikipedia, but it IS a wikipedia search engine.
I agree though, that it does look an awful lot like Google. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wonder if this is the finished thing, because I would have liked to see a images section.
But that aside, I think that I am going to like this. - Titan486, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I googled Tampa Hotels and got good information about hotels in Tampa Bay. Not to be a dick, Wikipedia is great & ad free, but seems like hes just lieing to make google seem bad.
- gray8110, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The only thing we have to go on is design and the results it shows. The results are pretty bad for a "Toyota Camry" search and the design isn't easy on the eyes. The engine may be spectacular, but nothing in this screenshot indicates that in any way.
- anteyekon4myst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4..continued sorry got disconnected.
Lastly, as demonstrated in the article, a for-profit status allows for the company to redistribute finances more easily simply because they have more money to play with. - anteyekon4myst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@lordmetroid
I could see how for-profit can cause concern, however, being someone who as worked in non-profit philanthropic organizations most of my life I think it is a beneficial approach for organizations to achieve sustainability in the long run.
One of the biggest problems in working for non-profit is the lack of incentive for managing resources. In a for-profit model somebody stands to lose and/or gain if resources are managed properly, it saves costs. A lot of non-profit organizations including the government and some academic, are notorious for improper spending. In the end this not only hurts the 'cause' but also limits the reach.
Also, there is nothing more discouraging for someone who works hard for a cause only to watch it get eaten up in administrative costs or improperly spent.
Another benefit of this model is that it gets philanthropic organizations to start thinking more like their main contributors, corporations. Phil. Organizations will learn to sell their ideas to big business in terms that appeal to big business. They'll have a better understanding of how its to the company's benefit that they contribute.
- Washandje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That must be the worst name for a search engine ever...
- tawker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Inaccurate. Wikia is a for profit corporation that runs WIkia. Wikipedia is run by the WikiMedia foundation, a non-profit.
Profit != non-profit. Wikia != Wikipedia
Anyways, there's a lot of rumours out right now. Some of it's true. Some of it isn't. Be careful, as usual :) - devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're absolutely right... with this setup, people will INSTINCTUALLY skip over the results this search engine is meant to provide.
I don't think it matters that much anyway... there are plenty of wikipedia plug-ins and widgets around, this search engine is redundant. - itsmekirby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unlaunched?
- blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How exactly will this work? It says that the top search results will be taken from the external links from the relevant wikipedia entries. Since wikipedia entries are editable by -anyone-...there's obviously huge room for exploiting, unless they somehow change the way wikipedia works.
Also, shouldn't Toyota.com be one of the top search results in the screenshot?
http://www.techcrunch.com/wp-content/wikisearchlarge.jpg - tawker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, Google does not host any servers for the WMF as far as I know. Yahoo hosts a cluster in Korea.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kim Basinger?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB8mTOCdnJM - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what?
- ISVDamocles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great Googly Moogly!
(Is Googly an adjective or adverb in that sentence?) - lordmetroid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The only objection I have is that it is run by the for-profit organisation branch of wikimedia... I strongly object to that and think it should be by the community for the community rather than provided by a for-profit organisation for the community using the community.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1same, my results seems fine. But hes right about the fact more and more people are gaming google, part of success I guess.
- Gargo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Says it is being worked on until December 27th, so hopefully improvements will be made
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Humans vs. Computers. Round 1. Fight!
- spliznork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How are human filtered results different that Yahoo or Dmoz? I thought we (the market) decided the human filtered catalog of links basically fails in the face of automated search.
- themoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Doesn't that break on Google's patent?
- forgiste, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This could be google's worst (and only) nightmare.
- Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why fix what's not broken?
- Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why couldn't they just get one of those awesome google search box server-type-things google sells? Too much data for those?
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google hosts wikipedia, and im fairly sure this search functionality is courtesy of google. Its pretty hard to tell at this point, but if the beta lasts longer than 4 months then its a pretty safe assumption that its a google project.
- fcmk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Tredici
Because it can always be better. - Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@omaryak & digg0dogg:
From what I understand this new search engine isn't a part of the Wikia site. It's a totally different thing. Run by Wikia, but not part of the main site. Like how it isn't going to be replacing Wikipedia's search. (Even though Wikipedia desperately needs an improved search engine.)
Although aesthetically it's looking pretty bland, I personally think that this is a pretty cool idea. I often go and look at the external links at Wikipedia because they can be very useful and don't tend to show up right away in Google.
@ canadianguy:
Even if a lot of Wikipedia is plagiarised, it's from random websites who aren't SELLING the information anyway. They're not losing any money - and they're often referenced. It seems to me they're cracking down on that. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't realize that was the screenshot at first - it looks like one of those generic parking pages that people put on domains they are trying to sell. The whole thing just looks so ugly, I could never use it, I don't care what kind of searches it returns. It's not like I'm exactly having trouble finding what I want with Google.
Yuck. That page is going to leave a bad taste in my mouth all day. *****. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This search engine gonna be opensource, I go for it :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a websearch which allows the community to input their searches and sites that they deam relevant (from other engines results) to a specific keyword is a good idea i thinks
- whipnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sponsored links will be 'Ads by Gooooooooogle'
* - canadianguy33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't really like the idea of wikisearch. I think wikipedia is great but it certainly does have a lot of plagiarised content so wikisearch is just taking money away from the authors by creating an unfair search engine that always puts its site above the real authors.
At least the other search engines with 'sponosored links' is open to other websites.
I know a lot of people would love to see an ad-free internet but some of those people don't realise that taking revenue away from websites will only degrade the amount and quality of the content available. - Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, the noun and verb 'Google' being officially welcomed in to multiple renowned dictionaries is one thing, but the adjective 'Googly'?
- Sashwan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Every search engine's result page out there looks pretty much like Google.
- Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What I am saying is the logo. WikiSearch. With the Christmas lights all over it. The logo was made to look just like google. I am not talking about the format of the page. That is fine
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Looks clunky, and the sponsored links section is unforgivable... that's why people donate, so that there are no ads. Also I widh people would consider not underlining every single link.
- rbrodkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's just ugly.
- iannnnn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really don't like the design..
- TangentThought, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I suggest attending school after winter break ends.
- HaleHarry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rumor has it that the Wikiasari engine comes from a start-up called searchme.com, formerly Kavam, funded by Sequoia Capital, the same guys who backed Google and Yahoo - there is big time money behind it.
- Shirokun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Needs more eyecandy
- digg0digg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2http://search.wikia.com
- starfisch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1it's in development...leave the design alone...the functionality & reliability aspects may completely demolish google
