- spark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did any one notice that those 2 pics on nissan's site look EXACTLY the same? Exactly the same position of the sun and shadows, camera placement, no clouds, same lighting conditions and reflections... Looks kinda fishy...
(for reference: http://www.nissan-global.com/EN/NEWS/2005/_STORY/051202-01-e.html ) - kwilliam71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Official press release from Nissan - with pics:

"Watch how this amazing paint can repair itself *SssCRATTCHHH!!*)
-One week later-
"Umm...*****..." - virtuatony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why can't there be any diggs that don't have people bitching about something they choose not to own, like this article was just about ***** car paint and people had to be oh american cars suck and imports are better, or american cars rule and imports suck, it's ***** ridiculous
- Vulpes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ditto
- Gorrondonuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nissan>American car companies
Yes, I am a terrorist. - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I compared the two pics in Photoshop (just have one in each layer, set blending options to Difference for top layer), and I found that the pictures are 99% the same (not including the scratches). The *only* difference is some extra bluish hues where that solar reflection is. The other pixels all match up perfectly... so probably fake...
- mycroft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great if it's true and not some marketing ploy. Those two pictures at the bottom of the article are a little too perfect. They look _exactly_ the same, except the scratches are "magically" gone. Can you say "Photoshop"?
- THiNK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK - lets Hope Apple buy the tech and apply it too all iPods ;)
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Something for the Apple Nano maybe ?" What about other iPods, mine's scratched so much. 4th Gen 20GB
- turbopro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nissan for life.
- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Simply amazing...what a great invention. +digg
- covrigel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All right, now when people key my car i can just laugh :-p
- Marmot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm with coltron -- if only it took care of eggs...
My Z got egged *HARD* last year on Halloween. The egg must have come from a slingshot or something, because I was *MOVING* at the time and it dented my rear quarter panel (as well as cracked the paint a-la-spiderweb). It cost me nearly $500 because they had to repaint most of the passenger door and rear quarter panel to get a good paint match.
It would have been neat if the paint survived the egging--then, it would have been a quick trip to the dent guy and probably less than $100 to fix.
/still bitter. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@gorrondonuts Nissan doesnt even come close to the Zo6
http://www.chevrolet.com/corvette/photogallery/ - zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i guess some nanotech is involved in that...?
digg+ - edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent invention! Now get to work on a front window that could display weather, speed, radar, etc... via embedded lcd!
- spark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't think it's in a factory - too much ambient light. Plus, is that not the sun's reflection in the hood?
- chupaCabra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This rules the school! +digg!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is the link dead?
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've actually heard about self-healing materials before. If I remember right, the way it worked was that it contained microscopic bubbles filled with particles of whatever material it was made of, and when a scratch occurred, it would rupture the bubbles and cause the material to flow into the scratch, making it disappear. Not sure if I remember that exactly right or if that's what's going on here though.
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or maybe the took the 'after' first, and then scratched it up for the 'before'.
Whatever, I bet this is on CSI next season. - toomuchcaffeine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with spark and mycroft, those scratches were Photoshopped out. There are some reflections on the front that look a little too much the same, I'm not saying this stuff doesn't work but those particular scratches were Photoshopped out.
- sekyuritei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0American cars suck... I don't need any stats for that. Unless you're going to replace it every 3 years, prepare for breakdowns...
- agent_smith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man...too bad my 350z didn't come with this.
- isolino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Being a body shop owner I find this hard to believe. If its just a surface scratch I can see it working but if its a deep scratch I don't see how it would work. A surface scratch is pretty easy to remove with some rubbing compound. We'll have to wait and see how well this really works out.
- wavesmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about rust though.. my 2004 nissan is rusting... :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To bad it only lasts for 3 years. Maybe it can be re-applied?
- dangerboy75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great Idea...
But No Digg... - jscottd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ditto agent smith
- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like my Nissan Maxima, but now I want to get a G35 coupe :)
- sudoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One question: Does it Drip?? Will my car's paint grow thin on the roof in 10 years? ; )
- Marmot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0deadlyhunter,
With a Z06 starting around $65K, and a Z starting under $30K, I sure hope the Corvette comes out in front.
For $65K, I could have two Z's... or one Z and $35K left over for other fun toys :) - inetworkyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if Nissan can perfect the 'face paint' as replacement for my wife's makeup kit...???!!!
- Marmot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0deadlyhunter, would you then agree that Lamborghini as a company is better than Ford, since a Diablo is better than a Pinto?
Is Nissan better than Ford since a 350Z or Skyline GT-R is better than a Pinto? Or are you going to claim that you'd rather have the Pinto? - h4lfl1ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does that mean the paint will be easily scratchable? I hope not, cuz i like nissans.
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds great for all of those OCD and perfectionist diggers out there
- sentai, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0http://www.ce8.info Nice work man
- GMFreak8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OH and I have a Buick parked in my driveway that has over 200,000 miles on it, and it's still running like the day it was driven off the dealers lot.
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still don't see where it says it "self heals" or heals AFTER there is a scratch. The way i read it is it is a "COAT" a coating that prevents the scratches from going too deep and affecting the underlaying paint layers. Not a liquid metal thing ;)
- Marmot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pas3n7
It wouldn't be much of a flamewar if we weren't using flawed logic I was actually trying to lead deadlyhunter into your point.
Seriously, I'm smart enough to understand that it's pointless to compare car companies and decide that one is plainly better than another. Kia and Hyundai make great affordable cars--for somebody looking for sensible transportation, those are great dealerships to look at. Hyundai has actually done better than Toyota on some reliability studies, plus they have a solid warranty. And while the Japanese manufacturers have better quality reputations that American cars, the actual gap has practically disappeared in the last few years.
Lamborghini makes great cars, but you couldn't ever install a baby seat... and you'll need a second mortgage if you break a tail light.
One way that the Pinto owns, BTW: If you have a $500 Pinto, who cares if the paint gets scratched? Park as close as you like and leave it unlocked--nobody will steal it. That's peace of mind you'll never get in a new car today!
As you say, to each their own. - znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ hahaha
- Pas3n7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Deadlyhunter and marmot. Your argument will go nowhere on it's current path because your logic is flawed. It is impossible to justify that one car manufacture is simply better than another. All manufactures have their pros and cons that would have to be weighed on what is more important by the individual consumer. Thus, what is one man's trash is another man's treasure.
- RMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, but no Digg because the article is so vauge.
I want to know how it works... - locojones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg for an article that can't even provide a cursory explanation of how the coating works. Similarly, no digg for any article that talks about a Nissan paint job, but uses a photo of a Toyota.
- GMFreak8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"American cars suck... I don't need any stats for that. Unless you're going to replace it every 3 years, prepare for breakdowns..."
So GM winning 8 segment awards in the latest JD Power Long Term reliability and quality survey, compared to Toyota's 4 segment awards means nothing? Or Buick being right next to Lexus is quality and reliability? How's that for stats? Another case of a person brainwashed into thinking imports are the best thing since sliced bread. - path411, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it does work you can scratch messages to your friends lightly in their car lol.
- GMFreak8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about not reading the stuff you don't want to read. Jeez, I know that's crazy, but it might just work.
- nanotecusa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Coltron and Marmot,
I work with Nanotechnology Smart Surface Treatments in the U.S. We introduced the automotive aftermarket industry to our treatments at the 2005 Las Vegas SEMA Show. We do have a Nanoprotect Paint Treatment that will make the painted car body easier to clean/self-cleaning and abrasion resistant. I made three of my vehicles Nano, excluding the tires in July of 2005. I would be more than happy to Email pictures and additional information pertaining to my Nano-Trucks and Jeep as well as additional information regarding our Nanoprotect Treatments for automobiles. To answer your question about eggs, once treated, your paint will be protected from the proteins in the egg as well as from hard water and acid rain damages for a minimum of 80,000km "50,000 miles". Your cost is roughly $350.00 USD for enough product to treat your Nissan or Infiniti G35 Coupe or Sedan paint, glass and wheels with our Nanoprotect Smart Surface Treatments. Each substrate has it's own engineered Nanoprotect Treatment.
There are many products being sold to the general public that bears the buzz name "Nanotechnology", however, most are either a silicone/siloxane/urethane/acrylic or PTTF base. True Nanotechnology Surface Treatments protect the surface by way of restructuring the surface at the molecular level. Here is a link to one of the on line truck blogs where we have 2 of our treatments promoted: truck.hownd.com/search/?q=nanotec The Nanoprotect AG link contains information as well as links to our photobucket account where watch 2 short videos of the Nano-Jeep going through muddy water holes.
This is not a commercial, I just saw the interest many of you had in Nanotechnology for auto paint and thought we may be of help.
Best Regards,
John W. Moore
