- cptn_cardboard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3great, the year after I graduate...
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good thing I live right next door to a school!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a cool idea to do, but from my experience schools are fairly backwards on budget issues... I work tech support for a fairly large high school (2600 users) and we just now convinced the powers that be to replace a bunch of first generation iMacs running OS 9, which is over 6 years old... now we have to convince them that the PII systems need to be replaced... unless some grant funding comes along, i don't see this happening in a lot of schools...

Qualcomm is saying wimax is dead. hmmm. - mrkoje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In my opinion, I think the school could be better served by using the income from leasing their allocation of the spectrum to pay for better teachers and other school necessities. For this school to embrace unproven and highly experimental technology which may or may not provide a real benefit to the students and at a cost of $240,000 is completely irresponsible. These school districts as public organizations have a responsibility to their students and tax payers. A responsibility one might discern as purchasing better text books or better laboratory equipment. While WI-MAX is a neat technology, most schools have a problem utilizing their existing networks and computer labs. This situation is analogous to a Katrina victim receiving a lump sum of money but instead of utilizing the money to rebuild their lives, they use it to purchase a Corvette.
I am surprised nobody has beat me to this assertation.
~Mike - gol706, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, tech is cool and all, but it's a waste of money when you see all of the more basic things that poor school districts are short on. When you can't even afford to pay teachers for things like art and music, wasting money on unproven technology seams even worse. I say lease or sell the spectrum so that you can use the money on things that would really be beneficial.
- tomvendetta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I feel yer, brotha. :P
- eastshores, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol! I kind of like this idea.. but I would prefer to put a barnes and noble with curriculum oriented books on campus.. and their little coffee shop. =)
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3can't they just stick a panera or starbucks near all the schools and let things sort themselves out?
- Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2my school has some limits. however there are a few wireless points in some of the science rooms where if you dont log on through novel, just use a regular laptop, boom, full web access.
- tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Wonder how many new hackers this will create?!? Just think of hackers in shop class using a pda to get their A!
- lil_isie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That won't work unless you are a student of MPS. As a former Milwaukee Public Schools student, I would know.
You have to be personally signed up and on a written contract to use their internet systems. Even then, you have to use Web Proxies in order to get to a lot of web sites, as you will find sites like MySpace, LiveJournal, etc. will be restricted and also blocked.
Sorry, so if you live near an MPS school, and go to one, then you're in luck, otherwise, not so much. - g33ky1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1our school has the whole school wireless but out tech guy thinks that every computer should be ran by novell and have token ring cable ran to every classroom.and he thinks we should just use internet explorer...we have no mirror servers and when our servers go down the whole school is *****.
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No thanks...already have EVDO
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually, most of the schools near where I live (Central Texas) and a few in other states (Kansas and Oklahoma) that have wifi are not secure and don't require passwords! In fact, the last time I went to see my Grandma the signal from the local school district was so strong that I was able to connect to it from just under a mile away (They had a massive tower attached on to the high school)! I would also like to point out that my Aunt works for the local school so everything was perfectly legal!
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha my school has no wireless network but is right near Panera with a Starbucks like... 2 blocks away. I just found that amusing. My school is poor though so that is the closest to a wireless network we will get.
- AUGTRON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Our "Tech Director" flunked out of Michigan Tech and some kids set up a huge router in one of the teachers classrooms so you can get WiFi through the school on a reasonably fast connection. My friends and I use remote desktop and proxy bypasser to get anything we need, I even got some kid in trouble for showing him how to view porn.
Very few schools have efficent internet security. - SuperNekidMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This appears to be a nice idea but I'm not sure how well some schools will be able to utilize the bandwidth because from what I got from this article is that some schools that don't use their radio spectrum either do to budget or technical know how. But I do like the idea and a way to further the use of WiMax.
- AliV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here in Uk our school just got a Wifi network, but it was teachers only :(
It was recently brought down by people playing Quote: "gameboy like devices that broadcast on channel 11" - doctornakul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm serious, where I live there are like 4 starbucks in like 1/4 square miles, in a suburban area. I don't think it's a coincidence that we have an elementary, middle, high school, and community college in that radius.
- Trenton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There are some school that don't even have computers yet none the less wimax. I think as we get more into technology as more schools in the united states are all using computers daily this will be very useful, but I see the 2008 deadline for the FCC. This is a very interesting topic.
- Trepanater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a senior at an MPS school and the money is needed many other places much more than WiFi, hell my school already has it altho not the the extent of the 5 mile radius that the new system clams. Also every student in the system is eligible for free dial up at home so I see no need to give wireless to localized areas. Also as I said before the money is needed other places especially with teachers, my school lost 2 teachers last year and at least one support staff and will loose 2 more next year with our largest freshmen class ever, hell one of our Advanced Placement classes didn't have money for text books and thats only at my school. There are also the cutbacks to music and art programs city wide, converting eliminatory schools to K-8 schools and middle schools to 6-12 grade schools, and cutbacks to teacher pay and benefits, they are currently not even working under contract, while the MPS superintendent gets bonuses that could have at least payed for 1.5 teachers yearly pay.
- dashaff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Will there even be any certified equipment available in the 2.5 GHz spectrum before the 2008 deadline?
- haochi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Ha ha, I hope I will be using it by senior year.
- doctornakul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0dont not not not not mod me down, i replied to the wrong comment.
- alanspach, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1is that anything like Cinemax?
