It's amazing how much I relish hearing about Blockbuster's woes. Makes you realize how poor their "customer service" really was. - craig4, on 11/08/2007, -7/+516so what happens if you rent a movie from them and you still have it once they go out of business? is it yours to keep forever?
- banastas, on 11/08/2007, -10/+467adapt or die..
- dboy3587, on 11/10/2007, -5/+281like when i was young and rented n64 games, and raced my bike 9 blocks to get the game in by noon only to find out that when i delivered it 7 minutes late they still felt they had to dick me over.
- stiggynet, on 11/08/2007, -14/+283dear blockbuster,
Your selection sucks, you have been raping me for years with high prices and late charges. I hate you so much and smile ear to ear knowing that for all the times you've ***** me, Netflix is now giving it to you in the ass.
Ps. I hate you - Hetman, on 11/06/2007, -1/+229Blockbuster sux. But damn I rented a movie from my local block buster. I came back a week later and the store had been closed and turned into a custome shop. It was like damn that was fast. I still have the movie sitting at my house.
- totorototoro, on 11/06/2007, -9/+217Zero sympathy for them.
Trying to undercut Netflix's price without providing the quality customer service that Netflix does=FAIL. - lanzemurdok, on 11/06/2007, -8/+148It's always sad to see a business go down.
But then again. ***** blockbuster. - gimlik, on 11/06/2007, -5/+120I haven't been to a Blockbuster in about 4 years. When my girlfriend (now wife) was applying for a membership, they required a SSN. I told her not to write it in and when they reviewed it, they demanded she give it. I told them there was no reason whatsoever that a social security number was needed. That is just ridiculous... for a movie rental. We walked out, never to go back again. I hope they do go under, and I hope it is before the two year prediction in this article.
- Scyth3, on 11/06/2007, -6/+120I still enjoy the fact that I can go to the store and rent the DVD...from a kiosk...for 99 cents....
Yeah, who am I kidding. Blockbuster does suck. Netflix and kiosks will dominate from now on. - meltingrobot, on 11/06/2007, -3/+111My thoughts exactly. I haven't been back to Blockbuster since 2001 when they turned over my account to their "collection agency" for 10$. I was like... wtf?!?! Planet Hollywood was much better in that they would let you pay late fees whenever you wanted without sending you harassing mail. I pretty much stick with Netflix now-a-days.
- spiderpop, on 11/06/2007, -0/+105You must mean Hollywood Video.
- Shelbo2000, on 11/06/2007, -3/+108oh bummer... Hey, blockbuster! Remember when you charged my debit card 4 times in the same day for a late fee that was incurred because one of your employees admittedly neglected to log in the returned movies before their shift was over? I sure as hell do! The overdraft charges were awesome! 25 bucks for 3 of the 4 times you charged my account. Sorry bout your bad luck Blockbuster!
- swoopdog, on 11/06/2007, -1/+94I'd say congrats on your new movie.
- Tgg161, on 11/06/2007, -7/+99I cut my Blockbuster card up the day I heard of Netflix. I never hated a company so much!
- skifreak107, on 11/06/2007, -19/+107This isn't a good thing in my eyes. What am I supposed to do on nights where I have an impromptu guest or heaven-forbid, an actual date and they want to watch a movie I don't have? I can't say "give me a day or two for netflix to ship me one" or "ill queue it up for download, we can watch it later".
- rebotfc, on 11/06/2007, -1/+84Technically the creditors of the company own it, but in all practical terms I doubt they will chase you for it so keep it.
- airwalkery2k, on 11/06/2007, -2/+85Without competition from Blockbuster, however, Netflix doesn't have the pressure on it to keep their prices down.
- KSUdesigner, on 11/10/2007, -0/+77You were young when they rented N64 games? Boy does that make me feel old!
- SlamShut, on 11/04/2007, -5/+82Ugh, Blockbuster. I was a faithful customer for several years, often renting 3-4 movies a week, often bringing them back late, and paying my late fees without bitching. You'd think that they would consider me a model customer, right? Wrong. I brought back a few DVDs one day, then tried to rent out a few more, and was told that there was over a hundred dollars in late fees on my account, for movies that I'd supposedly never returned, from more than a month before. I told them I'd returned them, and that they'd continue to let me rent for weeks without saying anything, which seemed fishy. I suggested that perhaps one of the goth-punk-douchebag employees had stolen the movies, and was told "that never happens."
I went home immediately and called my wife, and found out that one of her co-workers is a former regional manager for Blockbuster. I asked her what she thought of the situation, and was told that it's 'no surprise,' and that on a nation-wide level, Blockbuster has a (and these were her exact words) "massive internal theft problem." She said that this was just one of the company's internal problems, and that it was basically a sinking ship. Keep in mind, this was about seven years ago.
Fortunately for me, this former manager still knew many of the other RMs in the company, so with with one quick phone call, my problem disappeared. I went into the Blockbuster store the next day and cancelled my account, making sure (as the former RM advised me) to make them show me on the computer that my account was shut down. I was polite about the whole deal, but I got nothing but attitude and snideness from the store manager who was "helping me out."
So yeah, it's no surprise that the whole company is finally tanking. By the way, I'm sure everyone knows already, but that whole "no late fees" thing they had going (are they still doing that) is one gigantic scam, but I'll leave it to someone else to explain why. - BlueSkyfish, on 11/10/2007, -2/+78Or when I rented Gamecube games, they decided that the PS2 should have 2 and a half shelves with 5 copies of the same games and Gamecube and Xbox had to share half a shelf. None of the actual good games were in stock either.
- DankLogic, on 11/10/2007, -1/+74In my day we had to walk 14 miles through a blizzard just to point out that there has been progress made in the world over time.
- boxybrzown, on 11/05/2007, -3/+68BitTorrent seems to be doing a pretty good job...
- inactive, on 11/04/2007, -0/+63You will receive a letter from "Credit Protection Association LP" every two weeks. The letter won't include a phone number for you to call and let them know to ***** off. And despite sending numerous letters to them telling them ***** off and letting them know they are in violation of the law by continuing to send letters after being asked not to, they will inevitably send you another letter to collect $25 for a movie you can buy in any local gas station for $5.
- ahecht, on 11/03/2007, -3/+64How is lack of competition a good thing? Remember when Netflix was $25 a month? Remember how it went down to $17 when Blockbuster Total Access started?
All a lack of competition will do is cause Netflix (and not to mention Hollywood Video and other B&M rental places) to raise prices and lower customer service. - meltingrobot, on 11/06/2007, -1/+62Oh yeah... heh. Shows how long it's been since I've been to either.
- mt066, on 11/03/2007, -6/+59I don't think anyone would say they are going great, or even good....but this article is exaggerating a bit. Whoever wrote it really hates Blockbuster.
- humperdeath, on 11/10/2007, -0/+45When I was in high school, we had to go to an arcade, and "rent" video games for 25 cents per play. We could't even take the game home.
- koick, on 11/03/2007, -4/+49You can't tell me your town has no other video stores...
- jasonkingan, on 11/03/2007, -4/+48I returned a movie a day late once - paid the fine and went on my way. Three weeks later I get a collection notice demanding 29 cents. I tossed some coins in the envelope along with the shredded remains of my membership card.
Blockbuster can DIAF. - Scyth3, on 11/03/2007, -1/+45So...how many sentences were in that paragraph that didn't have at least one form of a swear word? Oh, zero.
- Sogui, on 11/03/2007, -3/+46We've been looking at Blockbuster's financial statements in our accounting class.
While it's definitely downsizing and feeling the burn from Netflix, it's actually making improvements in other areas and despite what the article implies... Blockbuster isn't going anywhere. - ChromaVita, on 11/04/2007, -2/+44How does that rule on any level? Eddie Murphy Delirious?
- Mipmap, on 11/03/2007, -2/+43Go to the grocery store. They are getting automated DVD kiosks.
- etandrib, on 11/02/2007, -0/+411200 movies? Do you go outside?
- sipofsoma, on 11/03/2007, -6/+46so i can keep these dvds now?
- Nerfdude, on 11/03/2007, -4/+43they did adapt. i have blockbuster total access. for 17 dollars a month, i get three movies sent to me at a time. i can mail them back, netflix style, or i can return them in store for more movies. when i return them in store, they immediately scan them, and the next movies in my queue are sent out, even if i opt to rent more movies in store for free. and there's a blockbuster online warehouse in my town, so i get the movies the next day. in my opinion, it's a far better system than netflix.
that said, this article is misleading. this is just somebody's opinion on how long blockbuster has left. i hope it's a good long while, because i definitely don't want to switch to netflix. - decoy18, on 11/10/2007, -0/+38Yeah, well instead of playing video games when I was young, we went to Europe to kill Nazis.
- toxicshok, on 11/10/2007, -0/+38I still do.
- plizard, on 11/03/2007, -3/+38i know some people who wont go there based on lack of porn movies.
- apzdsx, on 11/03/2007, -5/+40I'm a little turned on by your comment.
- jbrevik, on 11/04/2007, -0/+33I think Blockbusters late fee policy in the late 90's and early 2000 really killed their customer base. Blockbuster would actually charge late fees to the persons debit/credit card not matter the fee.
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -3/+36Blockbusted
- LacusOdii, on 11/10/2007, -6/+38Bull. I worked at Blockbuster for five years through college, during the same period you were renting games. There's a one-hour grace period. If you were seven minutes late and handed it to an employee to have them check it in, you would not have a late fee. I am not defending Blockbuster. It is a terrible company for the people who work there too. But tons of people are completely delusional about when they return stuff.
- typicalusername, on 11/04/2007, -10/+41I'm no fan of Blockbuster, but by no means is Netflix almighty. I hate the fact that they have NO customer interaction, at all.
I think the end of article is kind of assine.
"I give them two years before going out of business"?
First, if a 5% drop and closing 526 close is a big deal, they've got about 2456 stores left.
Second, I know many people who still use their mailed video service. - dboy3587, on 11/10/2007, -2/+33yeah i was in middle school im in college now
- anarchyx34, on 11/03/2007, -0/+31I guess it's back to Mom and Pop rental stores like it was in the beginning. Netflix is awesome, but rental stores are great for that spur of the moment. "Hey remember XXXX movie that had XXXXX in it?! Oh yeah! We should rent it tonight instead of going out!"
Also nice for games too. - ChuckieBallz, on 11/04/2007, -0/+31But it's on VHS!
- swoopdog, on 11/03/2007, -4/+34:stands up and starts clapping:
- obliviousfool, on 11/04/2007, -4/+34For $10? The services of the collection agency probably cost way more than that. They get nothing but bad word-of-mouth out of the deal.
