- Bukowsky, on 12/28/2007, -8/+297AOL is still around?
- lukas88, on 12/28/2007, -4/+242Ah netscape, I will always remember using it to try and download porn with a 14.4 kbps dailup modem. The anticipation really got the blood going! Until the pic finished loading all the way and I realized that she still has her clothes on.
RIP buddy - drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -6/+179RIP Netscape. You really ***** the bed.
- brbeaird, on 12/28/2007, -2/+165lol, FTA:
"only a handful of AOL engineers are still tasked with keeping the browser updated. Most of their efforts have been aimed at creating a Netscape-skinned version of Firefox with the Netscape look and feel."
When the main focus of your development has fallen to making skins of *other* products so that people still 'feel' like they're using your product, it's time to put it to rest. - Chirp08, on 12/28/2007, -15/+152AOL needs to get out of the early 90's. Same goes for Yahoo. We don't need/want portal sites anymore, it was great when everyone was just discovering the internet and didn't know what was out there or how to get it. It's time to start innovating.
- shreveyboy, on 12/28/2007, -0/+104Man, remember the internet in those days? You'd stay up all night and only see like 8 women.
- take2, on 12/28/2007, -5/+105Netscape Navigator is still around?
- gimmeslack12, on 12/28/2007, -2/+68Wow. My kid self back in 1996 would never have thought this day would come.
- Shaman760, on 12/28/2007, -4/+62If losing Netscrape is the way to see AOL out the door, then I suppose that's a worthy sacrifice.
Oh, AOL. That time in the late 1990's where you just didn't give a *****. Not canceling accounts, harassing your members, dicey billing practices, spam, popups, garbage, NO customer support, etc.
Took a bit, but Karma finally came around.
Next stop- Yahoo. - drgruney, on 12/28/2007, -1/+58Um... portals are still around because people still use them.
iGoogle... now you're thinking with portals. - aAnaRchY, on 12/28/2007, -5/+62Actually the firefox source code comes from Netscape. And now Netscape source code comes from Firefox :)
- ephemere, on 12/28/2007, -3/+45"Until the pic finished loading all the way and I realized that she still has her clothes on."
Better that than scrolling down and finding out (s)he has a dick... - tba2287, on 12/28/2007, -0/+40And don't forget those animated GIFs. You can still find a lot of old sites out there that say "Must view with Netscape 3.x" or whatever version.
- Neiby, on 12/28/2007, -1/+39I had no idea anyone still used Netscape. It's been many years since I've seen it.
- Rahodeb, on 12/28/2007, -5/+43If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, did it really make a sound?
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -14/+49which one of you schmucks still use netscape? FIREFOX. The reason netscape is dead.
- SteveTheSultan, on 12/28/2007, -4/+37For some strange reason this is interesting, yet totally useless information
- Aharoni, on 12/28/2007, -2/+33In a sense, AOL outsourced the Netscape development to a new team (Mozilla) under a new brand. Later, when the outsourced project became superior to the internal one, AOL decided to shut off the internal development and focus on customizing the new project to their needs.
Sounds a lot more sensible business-wise... - superkendall, on 12/28/2007, -2/+33Have you used Netscape at all recently? Netscape *is* Firefox! I think they also contributed money to Firefox development early on.
- das7282, on 12/28/2007, -1/+32It still amazes me that the internet as we know it has only been around for 14 or so years... It just feels like it's been around a lot longer.
- dxgg, on 02/05/2008, -3/+34"the browser that launched the commercial Internet in October 1994"
Actually, it was Mosaic, released in 1993, that really did the launching. - DiscoLando, on 12/28/2007, -1/+32While you're in your moment of silence, take an extra second to remember the 't' that was left off of the end of the title. Gone, but not forgotten.
- mistergoomba, on 12/28/2007, -2/+32not nearly as sad as nintendo stopping support for the NES.
- ventralnet, on 12/28/2007, -4/+33Within the 5 secoinds for me to read your comment and digg you you went from +1 to +6
- einfeldt, on 12/28/2007, -2/+30It's okay, don't mourn too much for Netscape. It lives on in the form of Firefox. MIcrosoft famously scoffed a Netscape's claim that it would turn Microsoft Windows into a "slightly buggy set of drivers" and vowed to "cut off Netscape's air supply", resulting in the anti-trust case against Microsoft in the US which continues today. Meanwhile, the code from Netscape was open-sourced in March 1998, and that code was first called Mozilla, later to become Mozilla Firefox, and today is known simply as Firefox. Firefox has brought Netscape back from the dead, and is today one of the greatest threats to Microsoft's monopoly world-wide. So rather than silence to honor the passing of Netscape, how about asking two friends to switch to Firefox today?
The history of Netscape - Mozilla is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla - inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+28you speak for everyone here. goodnight sweet prince
- smajor, on 12/28/2007, -2/+30This brought back an amusing memory for me. Back when I started my IT job in higher ed, our faculty and staff were die hard Netscape users. Those of us in IT knew that AOL was just skinning Mozilla and often Netscape was a version or dot release "behind." We started installing Mozilla instead - and the uproar from the users that "we were taking away Netscape" was astounding. No amount of explaining that Mozilla *was* Netscape could convince them. I finally hit upon an idea... I copy/pasted the Netscape icon onto the Mozilla one. Just like that it quieted the masses because they THOUGHT they got Netscape back.
- Nougat, on 12/28/2007, -1/+28Yes, they still charge $25/mo for dialup. But if you have your own broadband, it's free. It's called "Bring Your Own Access."
Not that I approve of AOL, but the truth is the truth. - rajkalex, on 12/28/2007, -0/+24It makes me wonder what AOL got for its 4.2 billion.
- tgormtx, on 12/28/2007, -1/+23Finally... when is AOL going to follow suit?
- Sacrifice, on 12/28/2007, -1/+19Unfortunate, but they only have themselves to blame. They were stuck on version 4.5 for way too long, Internet Explorer 5.0 ad 5.5 leaped too far ahead in features. I was a hardcore Netscape fan, but even I had to give in and switch. Internet Explorer was the superior product. Fortunately, from Netscape's ashes we still have an excellent alternative to Internet Explorer.
- Thuktun, on 12/28/2007, -1/+18Netscape alienated enough people along the way that it probably won't be missed now. Firefox has already captured much of the enthusiasm that Netscape used to have.
- jeexbit, on 12/28/2007, -2/+18I will miss good ole Netscape, although honestly i have to say i haven't used it in years..but still....
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -2/+18Welcome to business in the 21st century.
- Seekhey, on 12/28/2007, -1/+16Firefox is an evolution of the original Mozilla project. The Mozilla Project was spun off of Netscape in 1998 as they open sourced the browser engine. So, actually, Firefox *is* Netscape, and vice-versa.
- bjs3171, on 12/28/2007, -1/+16Every so often i come across one of my friends that still has an aol email address. my mouth curls up a little.
- CrushThemTorg, on 12/28/2007, -0/+14A gay bar down on 33rd?
- elfprince13, on 12/28/2007, -2/+16lol, remember the good old days of Netscape Communicator on Performa Macs?
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -2/+15Netscape and Icq where great programs until AOL bought them, i swear that day i could have cried. They were tainted and ruined after that point, AOL was the death of both programs.
- celkin, on 12/28/2007, -0/+13All this talk about portals makes me want to play Portal.
- michael1406, on 12/28/2007, -1/+14Speaking from experience?
- jjpertusch, on 12/28/2007, -1/+14the guy who was in charge of these computer labs for the school of engineering set netscape as the default browser for all the labs. one time i asked him why and he spouted out all this ***** about it being the best browser and tried to make me feel stupid.
this is what happens when old nerds get even a small amount of power. - HeatVision, on 12/28/2007, -1/+13That's why it's on Digg.
- jhuebel, on 12/28/2007, -1/+13Thankfully, the Internet was a little more innocent than that in the good ol' days...
- Myonosken, on 12/28/2007, -1/+13Anal.
- Ninjab3ar, on 12/28/2007, -7/+18Sadly, yes. And they still charge $25 for dialup. And if you have an alternative broadband service provider, for $5 a month, they can require you to log on through AOL service before using the internetand force you to use their browser.
Gotta love AOL. - Chirp08, on 12/28/2007, -0/+111-3 ish
- worthone, on 12/28/2007, -0/+10Spending every day on the net must have contributed to this feeling.
- deivys, on 12/28/2007, -4/+14Hurray for Google fanboys.
