- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11hey brainrecall.....hope to help you recall the fact that Apple did ink a deal with Hynix for iPods...Read it and weep

Here's another link stating that Hynix being a second source just behind Samsung

Things are really getting tense in Asia. - zPaxton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love how the poster tied this in to iPods as if they are the only thing that uses flash memory. Thanks, Cliff.
- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think you forgot about that the high tarrifs were related to Hynix infringding on Toshiba's patents and the Dumping was a 2nd blow; Japan had no choice in the matter in order to set an example
- BrainRecall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Not Dugg! Hynix does not produce flash for iPods, Samsung does (at quite a good bargin for Apple, so I hear). See here: http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/09/korean-mp3-manufacturers-peeved-with-samsung-over-flash-memory/
- forgetfulca, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3FTA:
"In January, Japan imposed tariffs of 27.2 percent on dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips produced by Hynix over the next five years, accusing Hynix of selling them in Japan at below cost."
HAHAHAHA, now THAT is ironic. Anyone who's heard of Japan, Inc. will understand what I mean.
Pot, can I introduce you to kettle?
27%? whew! Who could possibly compete with a millstone like that around their neck? - forgetfulca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Haha, points for the clever though obvious play on my nick. However, I forgot no such thing. I was referring to the entire post 2nd world war period during which Japanese industries helped each other out. "Oh, you want to sell abroad? Here, I'll give you these million tonnes of steel for cost."
Not that it's an evil thing. Certainly it's worked well. No my point is that it's hypocritical to use such practices and then to single others out for (possibly) doing the same thing.
What I think YOU forgot is that none of these international moves are what they would appear on the surface. This is more about maintaining position than balancing unfair advantages, imho. We canadians hear about a new tax/tariff going up in the states against our trade goods all the time. I especially liked the embargo against our beef because of one mad cow (later found to come from the states). Now they have their own confirmed case and we don't hear a peep about it. Similarly taxes on our wood products come and go, depending on how bad their hurricane season was. - flightvector, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1No Digg, this is dumb; first of all the suit is not even $100,000, and most corporate patent cases like this are a crock anyway; most corporations steal ideas themselves so who knows how truly ethical their claims are anyway? Look up the well-confirmed story about how Sony stole the Walkman idea from a crafty South American man who was treated like crap by them if you need an example.
I just think people who love corporations so much that they start taking these sorts of business practices personally are naive, and it's not like Japanese companies have never done anything wrong; they do just as often as in the US. This story is about a judge's decision in a frankly insignificant suit, not a moral issue. - cfpresley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I always think Hymen when I see Hynix. I thought I read SKorea's Hymen busted....
- edis0n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Had it only been antitrust. This just weakens the competition and could potentially inflate flash prices.
- philz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I like the 'May affect iPod' FUD.
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4"Hynix shoud change their company name to HIJINKS"
Wow, clever! - danielson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Right! If the article has nothing to do with Apple, it shouldn't be dugg!
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2"HIJINKS" sounds nice, though PWN3D sounds better.
Damn patent lovers. - Brainfog, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0:D
