- puffarthur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6STARTING productin in Jly 2007? I think they are going to bring this thing to market too late, because by then LCD, LCOS, and Plasma will have improved in quality and price. They already would have had to price SED TVs very competitively if they want it to start selling THIS YEAR.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I, for one, welcome our SED overlords, with their thin profiles, rich color displays, and old-skool CRT roots.
***** LCD and Plasma ;) - dbavaria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"...the introduction of SED next year is as significant as the introduction of CRT 50 years ago."
I doubt that, the reason the CRT introduction was so significant was there was no such thing as moving images before lol. Simply increasing quality, making a unit slimmer, no, thats not as significant as inventing the CRT. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7All your SED are belong to us.
In Soviet Russia, SED owns YOU!
In Korea, only old people use SED displays.
ftw - WhackingDay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm guessing these things will be a little pricey at first, which is normal. I think they're going to blow the doors off Plasma and LCD. LCoS might be a more realistic competitor. If however, the picture quality and contrast ratios are delivered as promised, they could be right, and this could be the next big thing, big enough for people to completely forget about plasma and LCD.
- stox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3CRT's are a lot older than 50 years. According to the wikipedia, the CRT, as we know it, was invented in 1922.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3should have read...to hit Japanese (surprise, surprise) market in 2007
- darkpath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Japanese market in late 2007, eh... man, that study abroad program is looking better and better. ;-)
On a more serious note, this SED technology looks great. If they support HDTV and aren't amazingly expensive (read: somewhat affordable to a college student) then I'm definatly going to grab one. Sounds like these things are going to be around for a while and I'm guessing they'll last about as long as CRTs too... seems like a great investment. - jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't wait. Makes me hesitant to invest too much in a new HD set.
- Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SED or a OLED TV... I don't care, whichever I can buy first. :D
- converge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Did somebody say OLED?
- MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Transparent OLEDs are much cooler in my opinion.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Higher resolution sets are a little pointless. At 8 feet the human eye can't quite make out all the detail from a 60" 1080p set. Smaller sets obviously have maximum viewing distances that are even closer, based on visual acuity. Even assuming you had a 600dpi screen and were going to sit the 4" or so from the screen necessary to make out that much detail what on earth would you use for source material?
Full 1920x1280 HDTV is arguably as high a resolution as we ever really need. Optimal viewing angle (in other words how much of your field of vision the screen takes up) is between 30-36 degrees depending on who you listen to. Fully resolved HDTV yields a maximum viewing angle of about 31 degrees before picture quality starts to degrade. - madjack3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I want my S-E-D!
- brokendata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Referring to my post below, most of the research I have done has indicated that a base model 55" SED will debut at what a decent 42" plasma is currently selling for. Give it another 6 months after that, I could probably pick up a 60" for $3000 CDN.

Might have to see what it would cost me to import one early from Japan on a "business trip" :D - kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I got an SED in the 80s. 2 weeks of antibiotics and I was as good as new.
Can't wait! - meatbites, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think you'll find SED to be a better choice for televisions, particularly longevity-wise, as (current, at least) OLED panels expire rather quickly.
That said, they are two completely separate technologies, each with their own useful characteristics. - erikaustria974, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a new information plattform about SED-TV technology online --> http://www.sed-fernseher.eu and or OLED is http://www.oled-display.net
- Wyattx17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well right now a SXRD with a 1080p res is looking very nice, too bad we don't have sources that high of a resolution yet... *sigh* too bad it's 4.5K$ for a 60inch SXRD Sony..
- CyberSmackdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SED is for sedentary because my nose would be parked in front of this all day long.
- brokendata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I personally have been waiting for a long time for these to come out, and will probably be one of the early (hopefully not screwed) adopters.
This is going to kill Plasma and LCD. LCoS and OLED don't come close to the quality. Prices are going to be cheap when production runs up since they can basically print the screens on inkjet printers. 55", 1080p and 100,000:1 contrast ratios are the minimum!

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's see.... new car or SED.... new car or SED... hmmm
- luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it lives up to the hype I want SED monitors for my television and computer. So much promise, it seems too good to be true. We'll see.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you. I was just going to mention that. The article says "...a once-in-50-years historical turning point for the TV industry...". Nowhere does it say CRT TV was introduced 50 years ago.
CRT as we know it even goes earlier than 1922 actually. I think back in 1910 (or 1911, can't remember) a guy was able to transmit a sentance to a CRT. - zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good thing i havent bought a new tv yet...this'll be worth the wait..
- tacroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any price ideas?
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But will the TV be crippled with HD DRM? Will it only play content from crippled DRM emitting devices?
I say "feh!" to DRM. - SL33PY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm already saving up to buy a SED tv, I started saving for it since an earlier story about SED was posted on digg.
Thanks digg for making sure I didn't spend $2000 on a TV that would be worthless within a year
I currently have enough to afford the remote control and the power cable :D - ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If this is everything I have read so far, I am so there!. DIGG++

www.htk.com.br - ArchibaldTuttle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1totally buying one of these when they come out
- eventide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0High contrast and low power are nice... but what about resolution? I'll buy when a display approaches the resolution of my laser printer. Even 600dpi would be really really nice. Anyone know the future of high res displays? What are the current limits? What types have the best resolution?
- sarno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually you can get a 60" now for $3799, much cheaper than they used to be. And YES they do look very nice...
- jayeates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So you're just going to live without a TV until they can do 600dpi?... good luck with that. Maybe you should hold out 'til they can make you breakfast too.
- quixotes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Stop making me buy things!
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's going to be $$$. Don't be fooled by the cheaper manufacturing stories, it will be priced for maximum profit. They will be cheaper eventually, but it will probably be a few years after it's been in production.
- rakslice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Smoke-Emitting Diodes? =)
- eventide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I meant I'm not shelling out big bucks for yet another low res display. What I have now is doing fine and already has low res.
mmm breakfast. - merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn it, i just bought a 32" sharp aquos last winter.
anyways, that TV looks awsome, the stand is amazing! - nograz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless you will be willing to pay and are the type to be the first one on the block, you are going to have to wait for a SED TV. They won't be cheap, they won't be easy to find and they will have bugs. I try to wait for second or third generation for stuff like this, just for all the bugs to be worked out. Look at LCD, DLP, LCoS and plasma, all have made some major advancements as they get older and older. DLP is due for a big jump when true 3 chip sets come out at an affordable price.
If you plop money down on a trusted HD tech now, you will be ready for a new TV around the time that SED hits an affordable consumer level. - animecrazy9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweetness, i am so glad my parents haven't bought their new tv yet. they need a new one, and ahve been asking me, i said to go with a DLP, since LCD and plasma have problems. i mentioned SED, but didn't know when it was coming out. now i'll just have them buy this and i'll "test" it for them.
as for me, i'll stick with my HD CRT for at least a couple years. - SEDTVfanatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Toshiba/Canon SED TV is due out next year (or the year after that) and promises to solve some of the problems of plasma and LCD TV's. However, I suspect that those benefits may come with a price much higher than LCD or Plasma and not all consumers will want to pay the premium price. I'm keeping track of SED TV news on my blog: http://www.sed-tv-reviews.com and forums: http://www.forums.sed-tv-reviews.com
- jimbo92107, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For that kind of money I could buy a cheap car, an expensive hooker and several kegs of beer.
I wouldn't need a TV--I'd be ON TV! - jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1cool, but i just bought a 46'' HD Toshiba DLP & was wondering if anyone knows whether or not they'll have sed monitors too.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow, that really does sound awesome
- ampere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is VERY good news... I have been hesitant to purchase an LCD or plasma because I have yet to see any that truly compare to CRT HD set.
- jayeates, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I couldn't agree more. I've never seen an LCD or plasma that could compare (image quality wise) to good ol' CRT. Yes at couch viewing distance the "lesser" quality probably doesn't matter that much, but it just ***** me that you have to choose between a fat TV or a skinny one with lower quality (& higher price). Hopefully SED is the best of both worlds...
- hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1good make more hd sets so i can get more hd content...we need more demand! this SD crap hurts my eyes.
- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Are you sure you're in the right place? I think you meant to rehash that tired joke here: http://slashdot.org
