In the Us, it's purpose is to secure for a limited time, exclusive rights to incentivise PROGRESS. nowhere does it say profit. If you can do one piece of work, and be paid for it for 80 years, where's the incentive to progress?
The aim was so that you created something, got paid for it, then HAD to create something else, OR starve. That is why, in the Us, the bit of the constitution that establishes copyright isn't known as the copyright clause, its the PROGRESS CLAUSE.
In the US, Happy birthday is still under copyright. It was written 110 years ago. - canewediggit, on 03/19/2008, -11/+53i think the movie, gaming, and book industry have a much more legitimate beef w/ piracy than music. as a band, you can monetize in other ways via touring and merch, but you can't really do that with the others (yes, some movies can make merch, but 99% can't). if everybody is pirating, there is no revenue. if there's no revenue, there's no incentive to create or invest in new product. personally, i think content creators should get paid for their efforts, but i guess i'm in the minority these days.

Everyone knows that once movie piracy becomes as easy as burning a disc in iTunes, we're screwed. Not the giant studios, but us little guys working in Hollywood 14+ hours a day.
