- chamblah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Believe it or not, but Macedonia is not a State within the United States like Rhode Island is.

- SoCalDissident, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11How many people does it take to get WiFi for all of RI?
1 to submit the story.
237 people to digg it.
17 to post how it's only going to take one router for the whole state.
3 people to give everyone negative diggs just because.
2 to post how this makes digg better because the story hasn't hit slashdot yet
4 people to resubmit the story under a different title
37 people to say "wasn't this a story yesterday? No digg!"
17 people to reply to them telling them how lame their comment is and to use the menu and report the story instead.
39 people to respond to those people saying "Ya! Digg!!"
Oh, yeah, and 1 guy to set up a router for the whole state of RI. - manfrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It won't be very difficult for them, they just need to buy one Linksys router and put it in the middle of the state, and they're done.
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Has AT&T sued them yet?
- Traffic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9As a life long Rhode Islander, I have every confidence that this will work wonderfully, and we'll all be better off, and no one is getting paid off to do this.....
- kden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Set up about 4 tours and that's the whole state...:) Great achievement nontheless.
- duality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5An entirely wireless state, even one the size of Rhode Island, can only be good for the growth of the Internet. If Rhode Island turns out to be the "proof of concept" state for this, then pressure will go on AT&T and others to make this a reality in other places----at the same level of quality.
- Beanlover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Excellent, the sooner this spreads across the entire U.S. the better.
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes, sarcasm was intended.
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Its run by a non-profit. You're pretty much insuring that connection speeds will never increase. Imagine if we had gone to public internet access 5 years ago. Everybody would be still using dialup.
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, there might even bee some bleed-over into massachusetts and connecticut!
- dswinscoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4WiMAX has a range of up to 30 miles with a typical cell radius of 4–6 miles.
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Rhode Island Set To Become First Wireless State...by using a neighbor in Massachusetts open wifi.
- donnikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As a life long resident of rhode island (not that hard, considering I'm 21 now, go to URI and work about 300 yards from the computer lab building shown in the article) its about ***** time they started using my state to test super awesome things. We're close to ending hunger, we're sort of (but not really) close to proving wind power works, prostitution is legal (indoors) in the city of Providence, they banned myspace from all public schools AND just yesterday they blew up a bridge, televised it, and let people get pretty close to it without getting hurt. Rhode Island is the smallest state in the union, and we have this uncanny ability to be have at most 2 to 3 degrees of seperation form one another.
however don't forget our problems, imagine people using their laptops more in their cars because of statewide wifi WE HAVE THE WORST ***** DRIVING IN THE COUNTRY THE WORST ROADS IN THE COUNTRY AND THE MOST GOD DAMMED CORRUPTION IN GOVERNMENT AND LACK OF WATER TREATMENT (in pawtucket) EVER.
anyways, I'm happy to see us on the front page of digg (ps to all rhode island diggers, listen to 95.5 wbru tommorrow morning and I'll give you mad leet shoutouts yo) - databyss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I try telling my girlfriend that but she won't stop laughing....
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"One antenna to start off with? What is that, like a .5 mile radius?"
So, easily enough to cover the whole state? - csimpkins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah... four towers made from quoahog shells that are held together by expired coffee syrup.
- raano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I figure one WRT54G should do the trick...
- coding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For some reason this story is funny to me, its a small state but still large enough for this to be impressive.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't think of many things that are better when they "spread"... except for maybe peanut butter.
Wi-Fi Everywhere will arrive when the market is ready for it. No need to rush something that won't be able to support itself. - jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Has AT&T sued them yet?"
Cox Communications and Verizon are the internet providers here, (cable and dsl respectively)
This project has been on and off the table for awhile, glad to see some actual action. I live in Providence, RI so hopefully I'll be getting full coverage across the city soon. Starting in our small state should be a good trial run before larger states try projects of their own. - Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Same here, apparently they might need four. :D
- donnikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2long island can afford their own private wifi, go buy another ferrari
- loof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apparently there's not much love for RI around here. It’s small but fierce!
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does this mean that me EVDO will work in Newport when I want to check out the surf report?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3*bows to treed*
- nathanrobinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hell.. i'd like to see a wireless 1/10 of Texas...
- avastyematey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what bridge and how the hell did i miss that one?
- lordhomer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent. Glad to see some other RI'ders on digg..
Course we could prob setup a wireless mesh network with WRT54G's for all of providence with little effort. anyone down? If so my email is the same as my Gtalk name, but with gmail.com at the end (prob fairly obvious)... drop me a note - urbn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doesn't say anything about which telecom will be given this infrastructure that will be paid for I bet by state taxes. And naturally it wont be free.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, it's not the size, it's how you use it...
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank God. I thought I was going to have to hunt you down.
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5umdigger your being sarcastic right? cus AT&T is the enemy here. If they provide it, they will charge high and provide very lowly service opting for you to buy a dedicated DSL line.
- rbtopp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah!!! for once im glad to live in rhode island.
- brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL I literally just got back from a 4 hour study session at the library shown in the story (the first antenna site). Brown's wireless internet sucks. I was on the 6th floor of that building, on campus, with a wall of windows, and I got zero bars. In the BioMed building - same thing. You can barely get a signal at the closest coffee shop.
It's nice that we're going to get wireless internet. It would be nicer if they put the money into actual snow removal or fixing what have to be the worst roads of any major city. Oh, how about getting rid of the state-wide corruption, and getting some real police so people aren't robbed at gunpoint two blocks from the university campus. I've been in RI for a year, and can say this state has such huge problems that WiFi should be somewhere below adding a friggin 24 hour diner/coffee shop. - PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny, we're not an island.
- masterood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can't wait! Cox is the only readily available broadband, and they overcharge. This will be great, until fiber is deployed or DSL catches up.
- mirrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And when do they plan on telling the population of Rhode Island about this? I keep close track of local news here and there has been no mention of this "project" serious enough to have warranted a place on any news broadcast or in the newspapers. Or perhaps this is being done very quietly in an attempt to skirt RI's telecom regulating agency... I'd really like to know.
- dalaeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If someone was getting paid off, it would have been done already. ;)
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Um....do you mean towers. Yeah, spell check wouldn't catch that one. Now if only AT&T would provide it.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you had to pick a state to try to Wifi, Rhode Island would be the one to pick. Their next project? Alaska! Then Montana, California, and Texas.
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, I am kind of worried about the "STATE" (aka Government) being the ones to do this. If something like this was done in every state, the FCC (owned by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT) could take over control of it and then monitor EVERYTHING that EVERYONE does through search, email, p2p, EVERYTHING. They wouldn't have to fight Google in court about what info they can and can't have, because they'd just log it all themselves in transmission over the wireless network. I'm thinking BIG BROTHER here...I am all for the free wireless internet for EVERYONE, but not for the government having ANYTHING to do with it! Leave it to multiple businesses like Google, etc.
- trogdor282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just for the record RI is about 31x40 miles, or 50x65 km.
- B4202, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not have it geared for public access instead of just catering to "businesses and organizations"?, and make it FREE !!! Information technology is meant to be free for all ! {signed eternal optimist/dreamer}
[see here for bridge links] - quay157, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hell yeah im in warwick
- enigmattic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's the Ocean State, *****.
- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Long Island next baby, we're not a state, but it would be quite a feat to bring 3 million people wi-fi
- gk128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey I live in Rhode Island.... and I'm right down the street from Brown... I should try it out.
- TwoncastDotNet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a Rhode Island Love/Hate fest here, isn't it?
I'm so pissed they demolished the bridge. They should have turned it into a bike path or something.
But statewide internet makes it better. If it actually happens. -
