- ReneRuiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Sounds like a winner to me. Social Networking site business model that rewards users helps bands get discovered = service I can definitely see taking off.
I love recommending music to people, and if I can get some compensation for that then I'm all for it. - bullium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is a GREAT idea! You can finally discover "great" bands that don't get signed because one or a few people at a record label don't like their music. Who's to say the guy at the record label has the same taste in music that you and I do? They don't, that's why this idea will work. Not to mention the prices are great and the artist finally get a cut. I digg it.
- thecosas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I like this idea.
No DRM
Pays users for good recs
Cheap
Artists get exposure and aren't limited by including their music and they can opt out at any time. - sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Interesting idea, and it's the way to go with the no-DRM approach. The recommendation aspect sounds well thought out.
- zengonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
Must be Italian. - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People at record companies don't have taste in music.. They have taste in target markets.
- AmieStLucas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for all the feedback everybody. We actually weren't even planning on officially launching the alpha for another week. But things change. We didn't know about the TechCrunch article until it was published last night. There are still A LOT of bugs around. We're getting them fixed as fast as we can. If you do come across a bug, send it over to Elias by clicking on the feedback tab on the site or go to http://members.amie.st/members/feedback.php and we'll set somebody on fixing it for you. Thanks, Lucas (Amie Street CTO)
- dodgingcars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It seems like all these alternative sites to AimeSt that people are posting are either nothing like it or have only the slightest similarities (i.e. sell mp3s).
I haven't seen any of the sites people have posted so far have the pricing model or "recs" model. And a few of them didn't even have the social networking aspect to them. - protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3promotioni with cheese is pretty good.
- AmieStLucas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We're getting there. The hard disks maxed out about three hours ago. We had a little downtime while we cleared out some space and hooked in some temporary fixes and were back up in 20 minutes or so. We'll be down between 3AM and 5AM EST today to get some more permanent solutions in place. Right now the plan is to make the official Beta release sometime in early september. Piles of new features everyone has been asking about.
The sample player is now working on our IE testing setups now, although we're still getting scattered reports on trouble previewing in FF (seems to be only in NIX setups though. I can't replicate it on any Windows setups).
A number of people have been asking about newsfeeds (they play a big role in the beta) and an Amie Street blog. We do have our dev blog over on blogger which hasn't been updated too often in the past, but is now going to be updated everyday, several times if possible. You can check it out at http://amiest-devblog.blogspot.com/ . - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think I'm going to use it, but I'll digg it for being DRM free.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well it's not owned by Murdoch for one thing...
- cenithx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly, it's the whole "rec" idea that's brilliant about this site.. just like digging an article helps get it attention and bring it to the front.. but comparible to when you digg an article with just a few diggs, then it makes front page, on this site you get credit for helping it get popular.. excellent for artists trying to get their work noticed, and a cool way for music lovers to listen to new music and help out aspiring artists at the same time..
I also love how members here will whinge about an ALPHA version of a site not being perfect.. oh it's slow.. it has errors.. there's not much content.. .. yeh, because ALPHA versions HAVE to work PERFECTLY with EVERY SINGLE browser/os on earth, have HEAPS of content.. and have their own server farms.. *rolls eyes*.. - Manchucka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Promotioni !
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Oh yes, ideas like this take off all the time...
:-/ - Nitsugua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh yeah, that is so new, nobody thought about it before ! ;-)
Check out www.jamendo.com : the 'revolution' started several years ago...
Worth a look (and a hear) anyway. - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Seems like people here are not getting the three key differences:
1. No drm.
2. No DRM.
3. NO DRM.
Setting a market price for music is the right thing. Plus, their terms to customers and artists seem reasonable. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a musician I have to say that I think this is a great idea. I wish you guys the best.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're fired. It's nothing like that.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ouch! It seems the site doesn't work 100% in Firefox. I just tried sampling a song and got nothing.... Anyone else get this?
- wolfzombie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't look too bad. I wish you could browse the artists (not listen to the music, just browse) before signing up though!
- Twango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ditto. Take off, hosers!
- bobdole34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah.. sample didn't work.. but it is in ALPHA
- mageofdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like audiri.com better
- dodoporridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Do all these sites have the digg effect working for them? :P
- Nation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1signing up is free ... well, you do have to give them an email address.
- dodoporridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I gotta say, I love me some soundclick. I've found some fun stuff on there. (To say nothing of the stuff I have uploaded there.)
- drthefunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uhh....you can. Click the "my music" tab on the main page.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Magnatune.com
Is not evil. :)
Browse, listen, download... doesn't require signup unless you want to buy... and then you can choose how much you want to pay. And then give three copies to friends to spread the music. - dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1but it's so ugly...
- Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Last.FM is good for the networking and streaming aspects, i wish you could buy songs from there though :-/
- drthefunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Again. Soundclick is horribly ugly. I can't even look at that web page.
- drthefunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ugh. The Jamendo site design is so ugly. Amiestreet is much easier to navigate.
- drthefunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are not useless if they can be bought. You don't get any money unless your recommendation is successful. And by successful I mean if more people buy the music based on your Rec.
- wildest, on 10/24/2008, -0/+0A site that really rewards established users and encourages change is http://wallbrawl.com
- chrs7446, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been using this site for the last two days and it rocks! I've already found a few artists that should really be going places. Check out Blue James Band and Portrait of Mary!
- totalguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out GRUUVE www.gruuve.com. You can upload your music, get discography info, create playlists and more. http://www.gruuve.com
- Spamiclese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Does no one remember when mp3.com was doing this exact same thing? Of course, the site is a bastardized version of its former self, but this concept has been around a long time before file sharing became mainstream.
- 1spinnaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, this is nothing new... this is like a copy of purevolume
- scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1*cough* jamwave.com *cough*
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow, it looks like shoit. Sounds like a good biz model, perhaps they are targeting the myspace crowd with a design like that. ;)
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2therein lies the problem.. your recommendations are worthless if they can be bought.
- bombay56, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1is this really any different than myspace?
- hodacenus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1sorry to spoil the fun, but what about a quite old similar website: http://www.soundclick.com/
- bombay56, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1myspace anyone?
- lowlevel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Good idea, terrible execution. Its crapping out all over the place, slow as molasses, and under 300 crappy songs available. I hope they fix all of these issues before everyone leaves in frustration.
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1 "This is a very alpha site and there are a few bugs (I can only get the flash player to work on Firefox on a PC, no luck with IE or Firefox on Mac), and the interface could use some help with flow."
Great idea, but foolish implementation. No luck with IE? I guess they only want 15% of the world to be able to potentially download it. What fools.
Maybe they should go back to college since they didn't learn anything about marketing. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This 'revolution' occured years ago mate. Sites like this are ten a penny now.
- SaciPerere, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1No RSS feed, no digg...
What is Digg?
