- Evari, on 10/12/2007, -13/+44wow an anti zune article with no flaming comments from the user flag564... yet
- picaman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30From the article:
"The checks were part UBS's monthly "Retail Rumblings" report, where analysts visit several retail stores in New York and New Jersey to focus on printer, PC/Mac and iPod activity, including on-site discussions with store managers, monthly price and inventory tracking and shelf space observations."
appleinsider.com is merely relaying the information that retail channel analysts have provided.
The name of the host site has nothing to do with the credibility of the sourced information. - RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Cool, then you'll finally get a chance to try out the wireless feature.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21I saw someone apparently from Microsoft on Attack of the Show preaching the virtues of the Zune. Olivia Munn however decided to ask all the wrong questions, like "now I heard it DOESNT work with Windows Media Player" and "so nothing I bought on iTunes will work?" she also mentioned how much bulkier it is compared with ipod.
It was a moment of true hillarity to watch the wind being sucked from his sails as he acknowledged all of these glaring faults (the incompatibility with WMP and PlaysForSure is the worst, not working with iTunes is understandable), but tried to save the Zune by promoting it's battery life over iPod (he actually said the iPod has "like, 15 minutes" while the Zune has 14 hours). He mentioned the song sharing feature and Munn asked how long could one keep the file, the look on her face when the reply was 3 days was priceless.
At the end of his presentation being utterly destroyed, the MS guy ended with "well, yu know, Microsoft they're just tryin to get this community started yu know."
I would submit the video of this if it existed anywhere. - johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15@pathy
And not being compatible with Microsoft's "Play for sure" music that Microsoft promoted before with other stores so you'd never have to worry about where you bought your music - unless it's from the Microsoft Zune store now.
And being heavier than the iPod.
And having a bigger screen but not better resolution so the pictures are stretched
And not working as an external hard drive like other popular players.
Other than *that*, I haven't heard any else negative about it. - Oakenshield, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20You sound like a knowledgeable marketing powerhouse. Your knowledge of consumer trends and economics is impressive, though my feeble mind needs more to chew on.
Please, enlighten us – what is the mood of consumers this shopping season? Will fluctuations in the consumer price index lead to overall gains in retail profitability?
I need to know, and Digg is just the place I was hoping to glean such information.
Thanks for being a great contributor to the community! - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14The Zune came out yesterday? *Crickets chirp*

flag564 is a troll. He / She posts to various discussions in a variety of topics for the express purpose of getting people riled up. No real thought or intellect goes into flag564's posts, it's just fanboyism, FUD and party line talking points.
flag564 can be safely ignored. - carnytrash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@pathy
Oh, supposedly the Zune isn't compatible with Vista, either. - halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@flag564
I never said all the people posting hostile and irrational anti-Zune comments weren't trolls. Most of them are.
They, however, weren't the topic of discussion, and haven't been hunting down and commenting on every Zune thread the way you have.
The combination of your hostility and perseverance is what's gotten you noticed and discussed.
As for getting an anti-iPod article to the front page, it has happened. The act of posting an anti-Apple article will not, in and of itself, prevent that article from getting to the front page. The content of articles has very little to do with the article making it to the front page.
The bottom line is there are groups of people who digg each other's articles. Think of them as Political parties. You have to be a member of one of those parties for your articles to get to the front page. Yes, it's true that there are exceptions. I've had a couple of articles make it to the front page despite my lack of affiliation with any of the groups ion digg. It's a bit like an independent getting elected to the Senate. It can happen, but being a Republican or a Democrat makes it far easier.
By the Way, http://www.anythingbutipod.com is a broken link. The first rule in getting to the front page is to post a valid link. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@picaman - I'm with ya, CNN and MSNBC didn't give the Zune very good reviews at all, what some would consider as reliable sources.
- Chesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Zune really got slammed by the press yesterday. I never really heard what made it so bad. Just that it was bad.
- halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@stealthboy
It's not scary if you think about Flag's motivations.
If he/she owns Microsoft stock, or works for the department that developed the Zune or any of it's supporting software, then her / his actions are purely financial. While essentially prostituting his / her words for the sake of the almighty dollar, he / she would be just another product shill, albeit a harsh and ineloquent one.
Personally, I don't think it's that complex. Flag is a troll, out to rile people up. Lacking eloquence he / he goes for shock value and harsh, hostile comments. - mikewhalley, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19give it time... although most will not see, as he's on most peoples blocked list ;-)
- RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@flag564
No its just a shoddy, rushed to market product. I am very interested in seeing version 2.0 and the competition in fosters with Apple. But this version, eh, I'll pass.
The question is why are you so uptight? Your comments are actually making things worse for the Zune. "Hey, I want a Zune so I can be just like Flag564!" - awm4, on 10/12/2007, -17/+23With a wonderful name like Zune, Microsoft must be dumbfounded that its product isn't flying off the shelf.
(//sarcasm) - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15I have no intention of buying a Zune as it's software does not work with the Mac platform. Having said that, I fail to see how anyone can claim little excitement or poor sales for a device that has been on the shelves for one day.
Before everyone claims that the Zune is a total disaster as far as sales goes, can we at least wait until AFTER the holiday buying season, Hmmmmm?
Vandread made the same point. Sorry, I didn't see it until after I posted. - davidburns, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The problem with Zune isn't the marketing. The problem is that its coolest feature, sharing between Zunes, the feature that sets it apart from the competition requires that your friend has a Zune, too. It's going to be a while before Zune catches on, once people are able to play with that future.
The fact is, other than that feature, its just like an iPod. Most consumers will default to an iPod because its popular. Zune will most likely make in-roads with the anti-iPod crowd, in the immediate future.
Wait till version 3.0 though before throwing the Zune out as competition. Clearly it won't make a dent before then. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@flag564 : you really have issues. It's disturbing how rabidly you defend the Zune in every article posted here on Digg. It's getting scary, OK?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Well in defense of Microsoft its definately too soon to tell whether it will have any impact in the market. But after all the negative publicity its been getting I'm sure most people like me will be waiting to see the next generation of these players before making a purchasing decision. Its definately not going to be easy for Microsoft to even chip at away at Apple's existing dominance, but we'll see.
- CryoNine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The problem with the Zune is that the marketing is just plain terrible. It seems like outside of tech circles most people have never heard of it, and those that have seen the cryptic commercials don't even know what it does. Conversely, the iPod commercials are extremely recognizable, catchy and consolidated. How can you get excited about a product you don't understand? A guy beat-boxing with his dog is supposed to tell me that the Zune is an innovative competitor to the iPod? Heh. Microsoft is trying way too hard to look "cool." They have a solid device, they just need to figure out how to advertise it.
- Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11"3) Wait till the holiday season is over and then do a survey, that'll be much more accurate and meaningful than doing it right now."
You should do a survey for what people are excited about for the holiday season after the holiday season is done?
Makes sense... - CryoNine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Remember when the iPod first made its debut? You knew what was being hyped which meant you could get excited about it. Remember when the Zune was being hyped? Hrm, yeah... neither do I. The fact is the marketing was horrendous. I ask a lot of people "have you heard of the Zune?" They typically either look at me weird or say yes. If they say yes, I ask them what it is... they can't tell me. The reason the iPod did so well wasn't because it was a solid device, it was because Apple knew how to advertise.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I cannot believe this flag564 guy... he just keeps going! It's like his own personal health and self esteem is directly tied to the success of Zune.
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good luck waiting for that to happen! ;)
- redhatcat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Sounds like something from before civil rights.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5flag said:
"Maybe we can have people from Windows Insider review the next version of OSX?"
Why not? PC Mag has reviewed Apple hardware and software (including OS X) and gave them positive reviews. OH WAIT! I forgot. PC Mag is filled with Apple fanboys and shills.
I won't buy a Zune. Not because of the crippled Wi-Fi. Yes, anything that transfers files doomed to explode after three days or three plays is crippled. Let's also not forget that the Zune wraps lovely DRM on all files transfered, even those you ripped from your own collection. Apple's DRM sucks as well, since all DRM sucks. However, the content providers hold the bat and ball and DRM is the only way to get them to play legally. I won't buy a Zune because so far (this will change soon I'm sure) it doesn't support podcasts, or even work with my platform of choice (Macintosh). I also refuse to buy a digital player with a tiny screen for playback. 3-inches sucks as does the iPod with video's 2.5-inch screen. That's why I won't buy either. My nano currently does everything I need it to do and iTunes works great with the Mac (I certainly don't ignore that many Windows users have had problems and that's something that Apple needs to address and soon).
If MS improves the device (they assuredly will) and makes it work well with the Mac, then the next time I'm in the market, it will be one I will consider. Not this time around though. - ambrosious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7When will Microsoft learn that copying another successful product and slapping on a few million dollars for development and marketing doesn't mean it will be successful? The day Microsoft starts coming up with their own ideas and stops trying to clumsily wrestle itself into a profitable market is the day I'll have some respect for it.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Every article and "review" will be biased. What would constitute an unbiased review in your opinion? Something posted on www.unbiasedreviewsofelectronicsgadgets.com?
Just because this writeup is on an Apple fan site doesn't mean the statements made are false. - aoctavio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8You have to buy two in order to use the song sharing feature, since nobody else will have one!
- Halbyrd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I would reply to your comment...but i have no f*cking clue what you just said.
Remember, kids, stringing random sentence fragments together does *not* produce a coherent post. - ctour95, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If a music player is going to succeed against the iPod, it will have to have a music store that is better than iTunes, and I don't see that happening with the Zune markeplace.
- AlmostEvil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Please don't feed the trolls.
If someone is blatantly trolling then simply use the "block/report this user" button, it's right next to the posting time on posts.
I've long since used it on flag564 for relatively troll free reading of MS & Apple posts, anyway.. if enough people use it on a particular user I believe that user will end up being banned from digg. - angelof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Flag makes me laugh. It's really sad all the effort he goes through to takes jabs at all things apple. For some reason I end up feeling compelled to reply to his insane comments.
- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@ flag564
You've built up a reputation and you know it.
Please leave the Internet... - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"Actually, Flag isn't a troll." - estvir
Way to lose all credibility with 5 simple words, estvir. If you've read flag's comments at all over the past year, you'll know without a doubt that he's a chronic troll of epic proportions. One of Digg's most notorious. Trolling is his hobby, his mission, his life. Do you think he reaches legendary levels of negative diggs on thread after thread after thread based on unfortunate body odor or a bad haircut? Please.
If he could come up with a single thought that didn't involve "The Great Fanboy Conspiracy Theory", we'd all be amazed.
For a dedicated Microsoft apologist, which you are (and I have no problem with that; rational differences in opinion are healthy and good), you'd be smart to distance yourself from the comments of raving lunatics like flag564. - mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7There is that old saying, "don't knock it until you see it." Sadly from just about everyone who has seen it and held it in their hands, it's very unimpressive all across the board. For any product to be displace iPod as king of mp3 player, it has to be damn good. Being pretty good or just as good isn't going to cut it. It has to be much much better and cheaper at the same time for it to topple iPod. From everything I've been hearing Zune doesn't even come close to iPod and not even to Creative Zen's level of quality.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14@flag564 - note that you're getting dugg down like crazy on most of digg, why not contribute something worthy and/or unbiased before shooting off at the hip?
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5flag564 is the Bill O'Reilly of Digg.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8note the actual user rating though, not inferring that cnet did a bad job at reviewing, just that the quality is still in Apple's favor from the people's perspective.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Cnet.com reviewed the Zune and gave it an 8.0. They gave the iPod 5.5G an 8.3 (original iPod 5G got an 8.0 as well)
Zune -> http://reviews.cnet.com/Microsoft_Zune_30GB_black/4505-6490_7-32068976.html
iPod 5.5G -> http://reviews.cnet.com/Apple_iPod_fifth_generation_update_80GB_black/4505-6490_7-32069546.html
Oh yeah, it's a COMPLETE disaster - no one will even think of buying it /sarcasm. - ginty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think you hit it when you said that its coolest feature will require others to have it as well. This is going to take time (if it ever happens). When I read about the sharing, I was truly interested (I'm an ipod owner). Then I read about the logistics of it, the limitations, see the silly thing etc. and it just isn't attractive as that single feature by itself is.
Its like they've taken a great idea and mucked it up. I think they will sell a lot of them but not because its better than the ipod or because people want it all that bad. I believe that eventually it will get paired up with new computer sales for discount/free (they're already losing money on it so why not). You go in to buy your new computer with vista and what do you know, you can get an zune for $99 after rebates. - readme, on 10/12/2007, -15/+18Nobody in their right mind is going to buy a half-baked product like the Zune. Microsoft themselves admit the Zune project was a "Hail Mary" play to get into the music industry. The project was started in March '06. Total rush job and it shows.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Does anyone get the impression that the whole tech community is currently in the process of trying to club this Zune thing to death?
It's quite funny to see it really. But other than their Xbox's Microsoft have always been traditionally quite bad at making hardware. I know some people like their keyboards and mice - but I'm not sure if that counts.
Anyway may the beating continue. I think in this case it is probably well deserved.
Hopefully MS will just ride the storm - and come up with something better next time around. If they can pressure Apple, then clearly it can only be good for the consumer.
But I really don't think it will happen this time around. - CryoNine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5So... people that own iPods and don't like the Zune hate MS? This is interesting and clearly factual information.
- ctour95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If the Creative Zen players couldn't make a dent in the iPod sales, there is no way that the Zune will either. I would have bought a Zen Micro over an iPod if it would have had a decent music store.
- Blisshead, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12I'm going to buy two Zunes because of this article.
- yellowmello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3man get a mac and a xbox360!
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"You mean like gems of genius from fanboys like this...."
That's an extreme exception, flag, and you know it (in fact, the example you chose is more representative of what you'd see from the Apple-bashers on all the Apple diggs (you know, "Macs are for fags," "Steve Blowjobs," and all that other juvenile lamer horsecrap)). The vast majority of the Zune criticism I've seen has been rationally explained (not that you understand what "rational" means). You like to paint all those who criticize the Zune, who use Apple products, or who just happen to run counter to your way of thinking (technology-wise, politically, whatever) as "rabid fanboys." You wanna see "rabid fanboy?" Take a look at your own comment history. Not that you'll be able to see what I'm talking about through your hate-colored glasses.
You're a delusional paranoid, and this whole "Zune isn't being received well" thing is pushing you to an extreme case of "foaming at the mouth" that's surprising even for you (and that's saying a lot). Just stop already.
I'd block you, but then I couldn't digg you down. I fully expect now that everyone is publicly tired of your nonsense, that you'll soon reappear using a different user name. But we'll still recognize you.
If the rest of you want to be truly entertained by flag's descent into madness, have a gander at his comment history on the political diggs. Wow. -
