- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!
Or at least get to work on one of these uaser equipped sharks. Throw me a bone here! What do we have? - badkungfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is so old.
As a kid I distinctly remember watching future Elmer Fudd use a uaser wifle to hunt future Bugs Bunny. - BIllyBobFett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't see how they could make it into an actual "beam", though. The way they describe it, it's just a bunch of piezoelectric buzzers that synchronize to each other. I believe the sound would still spread out (and the article says the working model is non-directional). The laser analogy is because the buzzers synchronize the same way the atoms inside a laser do. I still support them because I go to the University of Illinois.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it sounds like they created a self-syncing standing wave acustic generator. Big whoop.
- scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't wait until there's a consumer version of a directional uaser. That'll keep the neighbor's dogs out of the yard.

Has got to work a whole lot better (read: less energy required) with coherent ultrasound - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's good and all, but the important question is: How can we weaponize it?
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe they can do it with the 'brown sound' (Southpark reference).
But seriously, there was a cartoon character one time, called 'Johnny One Note'...who dealt with every situation by just singing his one note! Aaaaahhhhh. (I think it was middle 'C' ) - JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If we can have LIDAR with lasers, can we have cheap sub-mm resolution sonar with this?
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The better to hear you with my dear...
- drunkenoaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The brown note is older than southpark...
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MuaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaDIB!
- JohnnySoftware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is a laser really a reasonable analogy for this?
If a sound just comes at one frequency, it is just a monotone, right? Since it is sound and the frequency is locked, all they can vary is the volume - or switch it off and on. How exciting is that to listen to - compared to how interesting a laser is to watch, and how far & fast it can transmit information?
The applications for this and the applications for lasers are what seem to be completely disjoint. To me, for that reason, the term "like a laser" should really be qualified in this case. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How dare they call it the 'uaser' (way-zer)? That name might alienate some people from China, who will think someone is making fun of their pronunciation.
Or else, others may just be unable to distinguish between laser and uaser, when they say them in conversation. ("I said waaaaaay-zer...why can't you understand me, stupid round-eye?") - tsponholz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops wrong digg... sorry folks.
- tktechs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How could you combine the HSS sound (http://digg.com/technology/Controlling_Sound_ or http://digg.com/technology/Hypersonic_Sound._A_beam_of_sound._This_is_going_to_revolutionize_sound)
with this? Could you actually send a uaser through the hypersonic medium? - tsponholz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa! Great list. I new there were some good games coming, but man there are a lot of good looking games on this list.
Only issue with this is... I guess it's time to upgrade the ol' comp. - zarex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No. HSS sound has nothing to do with this. It just uses the nonlinearity of air to convert ultrasound to audible, something they've been doing since the 60's.
- vikingcoder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1“In principle, however, there is no reason why we shouldn’t be able to design a uaser to generate a narrow, highly directional beam.”
- WillyMF1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@drunkenoaf
Yep. Here's a good read on it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_note - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"I still support them because I go to the University of Illinois."
OIC ....As in illin' NOISE!
