- t0dd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17ahhh the great firewall of china
- Aztlan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9this site will never see the light of day in china.
- meihan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I can see it now using Tor.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't generaly get involved in political things, but I hate suppression of information.
It's up on my sites now. - Indeed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Censorship is SO pre-alpha oldschool population control. Come on China. In America we have full access to everything and no one SEEKS access/cares. Beat THAT. Also, does anyone have an add-on script to fix that? Also, Amnesty Int is awesome, great site.
- tanith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I like this site a lot, thank you. I'm adding the script to my sites.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7
When the ***** hits the fan and we see people severely affected by this wiretapping and intrusion of our civil rights, we will act on it.
That's what they always say. By then it's too late. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6
In America we have full access to everything and no one SEEKS access/cares.
Oh, do we? I seem to recall Bush censoring quite a bit of very relevant information that the public should have the right to see. Information that is required for several lawsuits and investigations to continue.
And how long was the 9/11 Pentagon footage kept secret?
USA free? It's hardly any better than Communist China when it comes to corruption. We're free alright. Free to pay taxes. - RCourtney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You obviously don't have access to recent US news, huh?
- RCourtney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@JK1150
Let's see... reports by NSF scientists talking about global warming being censored and rewritten by the Administration to support their own conclusions ( http://www.physicstoday.org/vol-57/iss-4/p30.html ). And then there's the censorship of the concept of 'evolution' and 'the big bang' from NASA websites by the administration, trying to distort the scientific meaning of 'theory' to again suit their own conclusions ( http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2006/02/04/outrage-at-attacks-on-nasa-science/ ). And of course this list wouldn't be complete without mentioning that many government health-related websites were told to remove information regarding abortion and contraception because that didn't jive with the administrations idealogical mantra either ( http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=9C04E4D9113CF934A15751C1A9649C8B63 ). - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"I can see it now using Tor."
Problem is, how do people get tor in the first place? - Andrewski2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't see how this will defeat censorship, since all a country or corporation has to do is block the irrepressible domain and the javascript code won't work.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Worldwide Innocent People Oppression Machine thanks you for your co-operation.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4China's gonna turn off the internet :(
- splintax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think he was suggesting that the site was blocked in China, and thus Chinese people can't download it.
- Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was afraid of that... but it this project still raises awareness of censorship issues around the globe, so its still a good thing.
- kozie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Without facts? Otherwise that makes no sense.
If you have 'too much freedom' that you don't know how to handle, you're gonna see your ass. - The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anything to get my site banned in China
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You do realize that this is stationed in the UK, right?
- inveterate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It will if enough sites republish. Remember, this isn't just a link, it is republishing articles. That means the Chinese government will have to discover and block every republishing site. This is an ideal, underground way, to get around the roadblocks that are put up.
- Mufflegrump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, I'm a wee bit confused. What exactly does this do? I mean, I understand that it'll post a chunk of censored text on my site...but how does that help? I think I'm missing the basis of how this works. :)
- spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't they just ban irrepressible.info and this whole campaign would be over? Isn't javascript a client-side programming language, meaning the local computer is the one fetching that url. If China blocks that address then this wouldn't work.. Am I wrong?
- henrah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's fair to say that the 'cause' in this situation is promoting the freedom of speech and deregulation which the internet is theoretically already providing by its very nature. The only thing which makes this a political, or even a country-specific, issue is the fact that China's government has legislated to directly oppose these values.
I think the point of this campaign is not to fight, or even directly confront regimes like China's - but rather to show that selective censorship can not EVER work where the internet is concerned. - Tiabin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Censorship? The blogosphere helps with that... (Good example: Stephen Colbert's roast on Bush)
- enderu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True, they should really have a server-side script. It would be pretty easy to implement.
- techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@DoubtfulSalmon
I dunno.. 1/6 of the world's population ruled by nuclear-armed people who don't like freedom is worth keeping an eye on.
P.S. Free Tibet! - Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could the great firewall of china be set to simply block scripts from the irrepressible.info domain. If this is possible then this idea may not be as powerful as it would first appear... but just to be on the safe side I have added it to my site
- rdotson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I'd like to know is where I can get things published that are repressed here in the USA by our own government. Just see how long your website remains up if you try publishing anything about how to make:
1. Drugs that have been declared "illegal" by our illustrious politicians.
2. Bombs, biologically infectious agents, or other "Weapons of Mass Destruction."
3. Anything that advocates the overthrow of the US government by force or violence; ie, such as Jim Bell's "Assassination Politics" which cannot be published in the USA (it's hosted on a UK website at: http://www.outpost-of-freedom.com/jimbellap.htm ). Jim Bell was imprisoned by the US government for simply advocating his idea.
Where is the free speech we're supposed to have here in the USA? - Egoist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would, except that I have all of China (as well as Singapore, North Korea, parts of Russia, most of Africa, etc) blocked on all of my personal sites and my online store. While I'm sure there are legitimite users over there, when 99% of the traffic I see from them are hack attempts, brute forcing passwords, harvesting email addresses, etc, I just blocked them at the firewall to be done with it. When the number of legitimate users surpass the number of script kiddies and when their communist utopia allows individuals have buying power, I might relax the rules, but those countries cause the majority of the problems on the net .
Why not America where there are so many spammers and hackers? Because the number of legitimate users far surpasses those who cause trouble. Because if I get an order from Springfield, Il, I know that it's more than likely legit than if it came from Bejing, China. Last thing I'd want to do is add pages to my sites to attract people from those IP blocks. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What do you mean how? You download it off the website. It's still in development.
If major websites contributed just a fraction of their bandwidth, Tor would become a great solution to the censorship and privacy problems now beginning to plague the internet. More people should know about it.
http://tor.eff.org/docs/tor-doc-server.html.en - outpost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Outpost of Freedom has been on-line since 1995. It is located on a server in the United States and is published by me. I am in California, the server is in Arizona. The server will not tolerate pressure to remove the site, so it has remained up, even with the articles written.
Jim Bell is a friend, and Assassination Politics went up. in his honor, when he was imprisoned. He is since freed.
If you have an article worth publishing, I will be happy to put it up at the Outost of Freedom website (though most of what is published there was written by me).
I would suggest that you spend a few hours looking around the site. It has over 300 pages about government's abuse of power, etc. - julesp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Believe me, we americans won't have much to do when the Chinese people revolt, they are 1 billion people. The more information we can get in there(meaningful infomation) means they will see the benefits of an open society(they will also see the perils, most of us believe the benefits to be higher). As their population gets better education and access to information the chance for a meaningful evolution increases. This of course does not take in to account the military power of the current oppresive chinese government but that's another topic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is a really good concept. If they can fix the technical limitations it would be great. Censorship is not just in third world countries. In Europe so much information about history; especially WW2, is censored. ISPs get punished for hosting or even distributing content that is against the law.
- DangerStevens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@DoubtfulSalmon
Well, one way to find out is just to go there. Seriously, sometimes we get so caught up in the isolationism of North Korea and China that we forget we can just buy a plane ticket and go there. Well, in NK's case you go next door and take a train in, but the point holds.
If you went to China you'd find out pretty quickly that they don't hate freedom, they just do things differently. Also, they are damned proud that in their ancient, ancient history they currently have the most prosperous, most free government they've ever had. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apparently you don't know that there are LIMITS on free speech. For instance, it is completely illegal to speak about overthrowing the government through force or violence. You can face punishment for libel or slander. If you yell FIRE in a crowded theater, not only will you get in trouble but if someone was injured or killed YOU will be held as responsible because you caused the hysteria. These are all kinds of limits on free speech that make sense and that really no one argues with. Free speech isn't limitless and free speech isn't free, just so you know.
- Indeed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ha, good point. Ok, we've got lots of access *relatively*

The First Aid Kits for You here: http://www.theaidkits.com - milh0use, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0spadin and andrewski2k are right. There is a major flaw in the way they have implemented this - all the Chinese censors need to do is add irrepressible.info to their blocklist and hey presto, the irrepressible site is repressed, along with all the banners we've placed on our sites. The idea is fantastic though. Let's see Amnesty implement this via web services in a way that the data gets to the end user from our own sites, rather than the irrepressible.info site. That way either the Chinese censor needs to work a lot harder blocking thousands of sites, or have to switch to using a whitelist rather than a blacklist. I just worry that the latter is more likely than the former.
Either Amnesty are technically unaware of the problem, or this is just posturing... - vramdal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The purpose of the campaign is not to sneak illegal stuff into China, but to make the general public aware of the freedom of speech issues.

what riduculous generalizations you're making. - techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Verrry interesting. With enough people participating, China's filters would have to be continually updated to block out the new vectors of info they think should be censored and/or they would filter out a LOT of false positives. Over time, China probably would only be able to see 75% (conservative estimate?) of the internet and half of that is spam, scams, and malware =P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Do you really think Chinese people are oblivious to the methods their governments use to repress them? They don't know what Hong Kong is like? They have mouths, they talk to each other! The point is that their government gets things done by any means necessary (and don't see a need to hide/coverup like the US).
I think my point is that at least they have some limited internet access, and sites like this could take even that away from them. They can ban *, and force an underground interNALnet. Sometimes it's better to let the dragon sleep peacefully? - julesp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2We Americans ARE free, that we choose to do nothing meaningful when our phones are tapped only means we have (in our opinion) better things to worry about. When the ***** hits the fan and we see people severely affected by this wiretapping and intrusion of our civil rights, we will act on it.
Honestly the reason most of us don't care about the things the bush administration are doing is because we personally aren't being affected negatively. When the things they do start affecting the average person, instead of the random Muslim that hangs around "radical" Muslims(nothing illegal but suspicious never the less), we just won't care.
I personally love the American critics as they certainly help us keep America on our toes to pinpoint serious right violations, such as the cops torturing people(seen on a recent digg). In conclusion, America is a country with serious civil right protection and some serious areas in which it needs work, not any different than any other important country in the world. But to say we aren't free is a serious accusation that can't simply be backed up with facts. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0@Andrewski2k - Or completely shut off means of access they are at this time 'allowed' to use. There is history and evidence that trying to "do the right thing" if you care to call it that, can end up causing more harm than good.
The way china is heading it's only a matter of time before full access arrives for the people...if allowed to go at its own pace, but this type of crap is just a spanner in the works in most repsects.
It'll make a few middle class westerners feel good and cosy and "right on" but the chinese will probably suffer the complete opposite effects.
You can't fix all of the worlds problems by "going organic" and "respecting your black brothers" people, we have awful ***** repressive govts of our own, sort that ***** out first before we start making out we lay the path that all shall follow. - JK1150, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2RCourtney, are you saying there is censorship in the US? Can you back that up?
