- lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23reddit's comment system is the *****. the site, while ugly, is also exceedingly fast. digg should steal some of reddit's positive attributes.
- PATSCRU, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19I think it's a good thing what reddit is doing, stopping votes from the same network.....if we had that on digg, imagine how few ron paul stories would make it to the front page. While the feature may be far reaching, i think that the benefits far outweigh the costs.
- liquilife, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Who cares about reddit. I remember getting banned from digg.com because my wife dugg the same story I did on the same network. I was banned for violating the digg TOS, supposedly creating multiple accounts to help boost one story.. Upon emailing digg support they literally made me apologize for violating the TOS and promise not to do it again. When I asked digg support if I would get banned again if my wife dugg the same story as me on our home network, they said yes and asked me once again to "promise" not to violate the TOS. I agreed just to get my account back.
So yeah, true story. Who cares about the reddit issues. - rm999, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Haha, they made you apologize? What are we, in fifth grade?
- bpedro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I completely agree, Reddit is much faster than Digg. Digg should simplify some of its tasks.
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10what do you mean by "algorithm?" there's no math involved. they're checking duplicates by IP, which is a sensible idea.
- rainergamer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Reddit is not only a cleaner, prettier interface, it is populated by people with a collective IQ at least 30 points higher than your average Digger. Not to mention every single story that makes the front page on Reddit is eventually reposted by someone on Digg within half a day of its front-page achievement.
Digg is rapidly becoming 4chan v2, especially with the people gaming it (destructoid comes to mind). That being said, I still like Digg, but this comment system blows, unless you use the Contra code. Even then it's hardly bearable; most of the time, I don't even read replies to comments, nor do I read comments after the first 10~20, as the rest usually look to be copy+pasted from the earlier comments.
I just really hate this new comment system.
/minirant - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8just try it. go to your commented on page, open like 5 tabs and it should tell you something about a script and whether or not you want to cancel it.
- latova, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7A better idea would to progressively weigh each one less as the same IP is used.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7have ajax optional would be good. crashes firefox sometimes when opening multiple tabs
- Palish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Most of you.
- rm999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It is quite sensible, but if two people on the same IP have proven themselves to be individual users (e.g. not voting on all the same stories), there should be an algorithm to figure it out. A lot of people share the same IP with someone else - anyone with a roommate, for example.
I would guess most universities give out individual IPs to people, so I don't think that is an issue. - expert01, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10Who cares?
- TenebrousX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3no, there is not a way to get the client's lan IP or MAC address
- deadowl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Yea, that really sucks for university ppls.
- bpedro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What you're saying makes complete sense. What some Reddit users are saying is that the algorithm attempts to check if the users are "near" one another and in that case it assumes that is probably is spam.
Obviously I don't agree with this approach, hence my post. - Zal91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2s/your/you're
- dark_helmet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It doesn't crash Firefox, just locks it up rendering the massively long pages. the script error comes up when a script takes too long to finish processing, just say keep waiting and it will eventually finish loading. I'm not saying this is good, its just not as bad as you make it sound
- liquilife, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yes, I wish I had the email still to copy from. It looked like a standard form mail but it asked if I was sorry for violating the digg TOS, haha. I was like, whaaa? Hell no, I'm not sorry my wife accidentally dugg the same story I did while she was in her office.
- anamanaman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Bug? I don't think so. The first person to get to reddit every morning in an office gets their vote to count. Adds some competition to the mix. Plus it'll stop the spammers.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Like if the points that a story gets weren't very little with the previous algorithm...
- Zal91, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well, as long as your not running IE.
- prockcore, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4reddit has too much "unseen hand" ***** going on. I've had stories that I submitted disappear completely an hour later (and no, they weren't spam). The stories can be found in my profile on reddit, but no where else.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes but you do have to wait 1 minute and really, thats too long in my books
- bpedro, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3That's right. I'd like to know what kind of algorithm they are using.
- rainergamer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I like the way you think!
- nickmv, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Seriously, how did this make news, yet alone the front page. I've lost all faith in digg
- fjf314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's quite a coincidence that I just read this article and its comments after reading speech bubble logo article's comments, which locked up Firefox for a little while...
- wiberg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what is reddit?
- supert0ad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1bs. this happens to me too sometimes, and i am not on a network. the asynchronous request to count a vote when the up arrow is clicked on is sometimes missed, it's just a scaling issue. also, the front page is served from a cache, your votes may not show up until the next 15 minute interval.
- koko775, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Like reddit has a programming.reddit, Digg should have a programming.digg or such. I mean, sure, we can access the sections via subsections, but a few highly targeted subdomains would definitely make me check digg more often.
- ocram, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So... much like digg then?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh ***** Light11, you're so right. I thought that no one would say it.
- fjf314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't using Google be a LOT faster than asking here? Assuming you were being serious, that is.
- fjf314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I often use Digg from my campus, too, and I've never run into any problems.
- kirksman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I surf from my campus. The computers use the same network. Am I affected?
- merdurian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0lol sorry.. i was mentioning about reddit. not digg
- bbjack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yes they should reconsider from user point of view. Instead of getting us banned, why not implement a new rules. Set new rules so spammers free and user convenient.
- jasperng, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Er yeah ... even my university using the same network.. then am i not suppose to vote in reddit when im in university ???? .. I really think it is better to enforce better rules rather than banning others without detail investigation
- merdurian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0just look at the same ip and ban digg user because of spam. its unfair for those who using public pc. its rather not to recommend people's page and share it to other digg members -_-
- Apreche, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Why do they do things this way? There's a much simpler answer. Have two separate voting scores. One of them is the visible score that people can see. The other is the real score you use to determine ranking of stories. If you don't want to count votes from the same IP, just add one to the real and visible scores for the first voter, then add only to the visible score for the rest of the voters. This way users will think their votes are counting and won't complain. However, their story won't reach the front page unless the story starts getting some more real votes.
- laylaaziz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Reddit shouldn't have done that in the first place. It suppose to be win-win situation.
- Squarsh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is a pathetic retaliation article in response to Reddit's insightful article yesterday about how digg is steadily bleeding traffic because of all the immature comments, bury brigades, destructoid gaming, coddling microsoft and other sorts of hooliganery that take place here on a regular basis.
- ericsan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Agreed. Reddit should implement a new set of spam free and bugless rules so that users won't suffer the consequences.
- bpedro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I think they should use a mix of different factors, not only the origin IP address. That could prevent some real comments from getting into the system.
- weehp3389, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1this is bad... they should ensure everything is working fine...
- TheMongo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Wait, wait.... Nope. Sorry. Keep looking.
- ujai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0atleast we know that they are doing something to prevent spammers dominating their web..
- 64bits, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is unfair to users of Digg and it will discourages users of Digg to migrate to other site. Hopefully Digg will be more considerate in this.
- 64bits, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Sorry for the mistake. It should be Reddit instead of Digg.
This is unfair to users of Reddit and it will discourages users of Reddit to migrate to other site. Hopefully Reddit will be more considerate in this. -
