- anubis2night, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Man the record industry really has their head up their ass. What's next charging the stores a royalty for having the privilege of carrying their music? ***** these guys. I'm so glad I switched to mostly independent labels around 2002. I got tired of not hearing great musicians on the radio because they didn't make the playlist that the record labels handed out. Now the big labels are going to screw the radios too. If I was the radio owners I or one of the many great small time record labels like sideone dummy or fat records, or even mid sized like Epitaph or any of the many others,I would take this moment to set up a contract with the radio stations and get their music on waves. In a year or 2 these artist's are going to wonder what the Big Companies have to offer anyways? They charge for the band to sign, they charge the band for the recording, videos, and promotion and travel for concerts then they take a lions share of the profit from the albums. Thankfully the internet and digital production had leveled the playing field somewhat and if the BIg guys are not careful they could drive everyone away from them. Imagine if U2 or Madonna didn't have radio time to play up their newest "sounds like the last album I made before I went about pursuing my hobby's" song. I don't know about anyone else but I won't buy an album unheard or seen and nowadays that's possible from the bands website or myspace / facebook page. And bands have managers for booking often these guys are not with the labels but independently represent the band. So what the hell does the record label bring now? Packaging and design? That's outsourced too nowadays thanks to fed ex or any number of other print houses and again the web is teeming with great designer talent...

The RIAA: Enemies of innovation since the invention of the radio! - kevro, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1If you don't think the music industry is willing to loose some funds to have there songs played just asked them what (illegal) payola is all about. The Radio is one of the last places main stream music gains attention. We need a radio station to stop being soon fed music by then industry and start playing Indie bands who are willing to give it away. Play the best of them and provide the songs for free down load on there web site. Tell the public where to seek out such finds and take request form there searching. Forget the call in format it's time for texting in request as well as IM. Calling in should be a lost resort for a new idea.
- wrillo, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1This is absolutely nuts! Read this carefully, artists and songwriters ARE getting royalties from radio. The recording industry is throwing a fit because they aren't cut into the deal! Its about the artists, *****! Seriously, this is something I'm going to contact my representative about.
- FreemanJack, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Maybe if we didn't have to buy the entire album, and realize that the only song worth listening to was the flash-in-the-pan single, and then decide to just steal everything else because the quality of the musis has been declining for years. P2P isn't killing the music industry. RIAA-fueled speculation and piss-poor musical content are killing the music industry. That along with American Idol, Lil Wayne, and Souja Boy.
You know that I am right. - BigManOnCampus, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1Wow, just, wow...
We are definitely living in an age where the government is of the corporations, for the corporations, by the corporations. - NightflyLester, on 06/25/2008, -0/+0Ther's also a good artical about this at http://www.streamingmedia.com/article.asp?id=10509
Cowards, Cutthroats and Weasels... (a tip of the hat to David Letterman) - gubatron2, on 06/24/2008, -1/+1it will probably take nature (meaning all the old farts will die and new management will come in) to make the RIAA realize they can use all the distribution channels, old and new to make money with ads, free music supported with ads, on radio, or on the internet. Either that, or people boycotting and not buying ***** from them
- Publicus, on 06/24/2008, -1/+0Priceless! I wonder how they are able to speak without laughing out loud!
