- sfgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody know how to do this on OS X? Apple did co-invent firewire after all
- mjm.basher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow...a way to get the hell off of Tivo 2 Go and its super-slow transfer speeds? DIGG IT!

Planticus - mike3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it only had another audio output I could simply connect the composite video or s-video + audio to my EyeTV 200 to copy recordings to my Mac Mini as I did with my old DirecTiVo. I don't know why they need all of those audio & video INPUTS! My TV has enough inputs (as almost all HDTVs do) that I would never need to plug in DVD player or anything else into the box. Another audio output would be SO much more useful.
Can I record from the firewire port in either iMovie or EyeTV? - mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0enzanblues, I haven't tried this, but you could always just buy a pci firewire card.. $13 for an el cheapo from newegg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815104316

http://macteens.com/more.php?id=410_0_1_0_C - EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lots of info at avsforum.com about doing it with a Mac (look under Home Theater Computers section).
@enzanblues: buy a firewire card, I doubt you'll find that it's possible to do anything useful with the ethernet port. - EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, that's what I've read. You can only get certain content off of it anyways. I think it's retarded that you can't. I wish someone would get the firmware and make it so all ports are active. That way you could just take the shows of the hard drive very easily.
Just a question. Can Tivo users do that? Take content off and put it on their computer? - bigboludo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only DVR that is somewhat easy to get content off is a ReplayTV. I have the 5060 model with commercial skip, it's awesome. I can xbox media center to stream content from the replaytv, or stream it to a pc, If ReplayTV would make a HiDef model, it would be the best of any DVR. They had to remove the commercial skip, but it connects to your network right out of the box and with DVArchive running on your pc, you can get all the content off it.
- bigboludo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 6412 has an ethernet port because it has a built-in cable modem. I'm not sure what good that would do, maybe somewhere down the road they plan on using it. The USB ports aren't active, so good luck doing anything with those. I've only been able to capture stuff off the local networks, not HBO or TNT hd. If you turn off your receiver, then hit the guide button (or maybe the menu button, I can't remember), you can get to a debug type menu that will show you if the content has the 5C copy protection turned on or not.
- smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have one of the Motorola boxes with all these ports on them. I always thought it would be nice if you could transfer off the DVR material so that you can free up space. I see that even getting shows from the DVR isn't possible (yet), but does anyone know why Motorola would include IEEE1394 and Ethernet ports if not for this ability? Also it seems like if someone could get ahold of the source to the firmware you could enable all sorts of goodies AND keep the functions of the box working.
- EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, thanks for the link mcewen. I think I'll have to order that.
- 0x44617665, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't count on getting anything from the Ethernet port. Also, if you have DVR capabilities, you can't pull DVR'd material directly from the hard drive. Maybe someone will figure it out...
- EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a Motorola 6412 and I have noticed the firewire and ethernet ports on the back of it when I first got it. So I scoured the net and came upon this site couple months ago. Only to find I can't use the ethernet port, and I never could really find an explanation why. And I don't have firewire on my computer. So I'm still stuck on getting my content to my computer hard drive.
If anyone has info on using the ethernet port on it, please tell.
I digg though, very useful site if I had firewire. - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if they can get this to work perfectly with MCE, i will be impressed.
- bigboludo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is the link I followed:
http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/
Below is how to check for 5C protection (what's 5C anyway?):
# Enter DIAGNOSTICS page on the DCT6412 as follows with remote: Press Cable, Power off, Select, Select.
# Scroll down to: d11 INTERFACE STATUS and then click right arrow to enter that module.
# In 1394 I/O DEVICE section you should see ACTIVE PORTS=1 (indicating the Firewire connection is active) and look at 5C IMPLEMENTATION value. If it is something other than 0 this means 5C protection is enabled and you won't be able to capture that channel. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The ethernet is going to be used in the future for getting a list of the cable guide and some other features. I know this because my uncle works in the advertising department for Comcast.
- jlaudio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i actually have this set up,
WinXP Pro machine , Mac mini and a Motorola DCT6412 with comcast. I've tried it on both systems. The windows XP machine is a nightmare to try and get the program to recognize the "Panasonic avc tuner driver" and the most successful attempt i had was on the Mac mini. It was awesome. And all i needed was the Firewire cable. because the other two programs are built in to the OS. I plugged in the firewire and the CapDVHS program recognized it right away. I recorded High Definition Monday Night Football!!! It was Amazing. The only thing that sucks now is that 1 minute at High Def is equivalent to 105MB - and 2 minutes at Standard Def was 105 MB. And also, last but not least. After i recorded my HD Content onto my Mac Mini successfully i have one problem. I can view the content with No Problem :) but....HOW THE HECK DO U RECORD A .m2t FILE!!?!
-Thanks in advance for all your help
-Carlos - Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey I'm in Montgomery County too, but it's PA. I noticed those ports when the guy was installing them. I asked and he just told me they hadn't come up with a use for them yet. Nice Digg.
- 0x44617665, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Successfully implemented this about 6 months ago, was able to pull HD content from HBO & Showtime off Montgomery County MD, Comcast system. The 5C protection may be present now, need to check again.
- dannygo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Was gonna post this myself months ago but when I tried it I could only record non-protected content (i.e. local channels pretty much). Same goes for DVR'ed stuff. If it is protected, you can't record it on to your PC or Mac. Was fun to get to work but definitely not worth the hassle.
- Rsulliv1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FOR OSX users:
OSX comes with these two apps, they're all you need:
1.) AVCBrowser
2.) VirtualDVHS
and of course a good long firewire cable and a nice sized HD. - Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good find. i just hope it's not too outdated. it was originally posted almost a year and a half ago, and i've had my comcast DVR box for a year. i'll have to mess with this when i get home this evening, i have a firewire port on my laptop. can't wait to give it a shot, but i'm guessing this whole 5C protection that he mentions is even more widely implemented by now.
- Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>The ethernet is going to be used in the future for getting a list >>of the cable guide and some other features
You'd think the cable guide would just be able to come over the cable. I can see "other features" such as remote programming (i.e. set up a recording of a show(s)) via a browser that may use the ethernet port or as a way to network several boxes together (show transfers, etc.). Just guessing - FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason it's there is because it's mandated by US Federal law. This should work on ANY digital cable box, and if it doesn't you have the right to demand one from your cable company.
- winmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was great when it worked accross the board. Now Comcast (Boston Area) enabled 5C encryption on all but local stations.
If you want to record HD episode of network sports or Lost great, but the clampdown is on and very soon you won't be able to watch /record anything.
HD/Bluray won't display on computer monitors without HDCP
Vista will block access to the AV data streams (no more ripped DVDs)
No more analog connectors.
Welcome to the future of entertainment - bjdraw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good to see my article is usefull to someone.
- Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This worked perfectly on my HD Motorola Box! I can record all my HD Locals, INHD, ESPN HD, HBO HD, and all of my regular cable cannels aswell. I'm thrilled!
- Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i take that back. comcast blocks all the movie channels in SD and HD. and ESPNHD. everything else is not 5C protected. oh well. i don't know how much i'm going to use this anyway. usually when i want a program or movie, i d/l it.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is awesome, tried it out and it works perfectly! The odd thing is.... it captures every single channel (INHD, Discovery HD,+), even the analog channels. I have the same Motorola box, but I live in Washington, so I do have the Microsoft guide. Not sure if that means anything but the instructions say I shouldn't be able to get analog channels. The only thing that doesn't work is on demand, that would have been pretty cool but oh well. Maybe I should start my own distro on irc now.... nah j/k ;)
- Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jlaudio,
i have the same box, set everything up and it worked perfectly on my win xp machine first try. unfortunately, it appears that comcast has 5C protection on all my HD channels, so i have to stick with SD recording for now. - EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0*orgasms
That sounds like it's AWESOME. I should get me one of those seeing as how right now I am only renting my DVR from my cable company. - keenanj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this is old news I used the thread months ago to record over firewire there is even a hack for media center edition to use firewire to record.
I have been able to record everything including HBO in HD
this makes an expensive tv tuner card kind of useless.
