- misfit410, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5two key words "TECH DEMO"
Yea, it does look better than UT2K7, because UT2k7 is an actual game.
Tech Demos for the Geforce 4 almost looked this good.. I will wait for
an actual game before being impressed. - Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Well, the Xbox 260 fan-boys should be out in full force with this story, screaming at the top of their lungs about how "There's no way that's real time!!! XBox Rulz! Playstation Sucxorz!"
Silly fanboys. Who cares? I'll get a Xbox360 for now because it's out, and a PS3 later as well. What's with people choosing one console and defending it to the death? I'm tired of fanboys and there never ending crusades. - kejistan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I could see this as being real, since they only need to render two characters at any given time during this demo. Plus, the only times when they change anything the scene is static. Thus they can use unbelievable amounts of polygons and shader effects on individual characters, since they are effectively the only things being rendered. All in all, while it looks impressive right now, the final game will not look nearly as impressive.
- t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3there's no way that's prerendered. they're moving options around in realtime. silly goose.
- theanticrust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really don't get why it's so hard to believe that this is real-time. Isn't this what the next-gen games should look like? Especially when it's just a demo. A graphics demo no less, so no processing of AI, physics, etc.
- knid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Um, boycott Sony?
- DeadOnArrival, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well sadly you folks forget to many things.. But this isn't pre-rendered its real. Also the fact that halo2 was shown and looked better was due to the focus group it was being worked on, but was limited to the size of the disc and hardware. The ps3 on the other hand is very capable of this game, and has the optical medium to back it, i mean COME ON 50g of storage thats 4 to 5 times the size of a dvd not to speak you COULD have compressed texture on that to.. So anything you see with the ps3 will look 80 to 100% just like what they have shown..
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AWESOME! I wish it was like the old days and this would STAY on the hoepage instead of beeing moved away. Lame.
- electronicmaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is no way this is prerendered...
thats the same thing they said about msgs2...haha - STKD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony; "We can render Snake's nasal hair using more polys than insert-x-boast-here. At 120fps."
Nintendo; "We can give you pure, FUN and ORIGINAL experiences."
One is an idle technical "mine's bigger" from a company who simply wish they could get back to selling you media content for any platform and couldn't care less for the games.
The other is a statement from a company which has shown nothing but 100% dedication to delivering the best games. For every PS2 game that is actually worth playing from start to finish, Nintendo has an entire generation of games that far exceed it. Games for Sony and to an extent Microsoft-produced consoles still lack that "spark". They are empty shells. Nintendo fanboys exist for a reason; Consistantly high quality games on every single platform. - MurrayFox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very impressive.. Can't wait :-)
- Squill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait for PS3.
- GunFingers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't get how people can still by into this type of crap. Look at the Halo 2 announcement trailer. Thing was jaw dropping, and it was rendered in real time using the game engine. The final game, once all of the AI and physics were added, and they had to actually achieve a playable framerate, looked nowhere near as good. This is a pretty simple ploy used by all of the high profile devs to get the fanboys in a lather. I'm the biggest Halo fanboy there is, but Bungie did with Halo 2 what these cats are doing with MGS4. Showing a video of a scene rendered in the game engine, but that is likely showing at about .5 fps live.
If all of the fanboys would stop buying into this crap, maybe the devs would stop with unrealistic videos and not talk about how earth shattering the game is going to look until they have a live, playable piece of code. - Matrix_Prime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Don't worry The last 3 Metal Gear Solids have been more than entertaining (aside from the fact that i was sort of dissapointed in SOL). "
Exactly! MGS is the rare game that has a kickass story, is fun to play, AND has gorgeous graphics. - Xinex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who cares? Make it fun to play.
- cr4wley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG FOR ***** SAKE =]
- memoryleek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1freaking WOW!!!
- kev01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that was truely jaw-dropping.
f' this nonsense of dissing ps3 and this being fake and what not. you know why the ps3 and the revolution are gonna succeed? ATTENTION TO DETAIL. the japanese have an attention to detail that is unbelievable. this video clearly gives evidence of it.
xbox360 is an american box, what are americans? lazy! everything is oversought. look at all the marketing hype they needed for the box, and STILL crappy numbers (recent story said xbox 1 launch was still better). too much marketing with the xbox360, if it was really good, then you don't need marketing to sell it.
ps3 and revolution for me. - logicalnoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think kojima is terrific on the narrative side. He pushes the limits of technology to get his story and charectars accross. However his game design has yet to evolve. Each MGS game since the one on PS1 has just complicated the game rather than improved it. His games have never felt as natural and intuitive as the splinter cell agmes or prince of persia games. I'm glad he's pushing the PS3 just like he pushed the PS2 but ultimately I doubt MGS4 will be all that great of a game.
- Phyrefly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actual game graphics never live up to the pre-release hype. PSX, PS2, XBOX, XBOX360 and now PS3... don't get your hopes up.
- jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is not prerendered, but come on, this is only one char without an ai running.
you should see the DOA demos when they only have one char on the screen. - tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn!...
The last part with the LCD screen, did you got it, even if we don't know if its real time or not, that ***** was awesome - everything is on the same time-line, no video on the LCD, just rendering and adding filters to the "LCD" object which shows a camera from the same scene elsewhere, that's truly ambitious!. - Yutuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The demo may be completely realtime but it looks like the movie itself was spit out frame by frame like a Pixar movie.
Looks like this way because when they try to play back a scene it doesn't playback at full frame-rate.
If it's not real-time, why go through all the trouble of rendering out a dummy movie with debug menus all over the place? - clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is not prerendered. It's from the dev kit.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It will get much better from here."
:O
They still have to add the game content.. lol.
Now, I just really hope that they provide the same upside for the game content.. Such as freedom to move around and go wherever you want in the city.. Like, remember the movie black hawk down? They would see a gang of 30 people on one street, so they'd take a different street. A small example there of why the game itself should have lots of freedom. To let you make your own choices as to what route to take, or as how to beat the game. - geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Silly fanboys. Who cares? I'll get a Xbox360 for now because it's out, and a PS3 later as well. What's with people choosing one console and defending it to the death? I'm tired of fanboys and there never ending crusades."
Unlike you, most people don't have money blowing out of their ass. - Zukunft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Loser. You deserve your POS Dreamcast 360."
No Thanks, I'm doing fine with my DS right now. - bhsx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gotta agree, to an extent, with BBX25.
This is not a pre-rendered video, no; but it is a video showing the pre-rendering capabilities of the PS3 dev-kit. This is not showing what will be possible during "gameplay" of the PS3, nor of MGS.
my $.02 - mikey601587, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would seem pointless to showcase what kojima can do as well as the PS3 engine if it can't be achieved in the final copy of the game wouldn't you agree? I mean finally we see proof that its not pre-rendered and the fanboys still try to find ways to pick it down. Its also pointless and ignorant to compare the history of when they show early footage of the game and what how it really looked when we actually played it. This is NEXT-GENERATION!!! I believe its totally capable of having that caliber of graphics in the final copy of MGS4.
- thetruth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hasn't Sony lied about capabilities of its previous 2 systems by presenting prerendered scenes?
In any case, who cares? Games are about gameplay first and foremost. I'm not buying into graphics hype. Chess has persisted for thousands of years as a popular game not because of the beauty of intricately carved play pieces, but instead because the underlying strategic variety and potential of the game makes it fun and replayable by those of various skill levels. Tetris is one of the most brilliant and successful games of the modern age, even without the benefit of each block having 460000 polygons. OTOH, Dragon's Lair and Night Trap had video production that outshone any of the games at the time. Those games are now tiny footnotes in history, as they had nothing to offer aside from gee-wow-look visuals.
I actually think the regular severe changes in console systems set back advancements in gameplay, since the game developers are constantly focused on mastering the latest greatest whizbang tricks as opposed to fleshing out the way the games play. The NES' limitations and longevity produced some fairly deep games near the end of its lifespan. NetHack for dumb terminals remains one of the most interesting, varied and thoughtful games around after decades. - mikeyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there anyone around here who likes Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft consoles for different reasons and feel they don't have to wrap their lips around the balls of just one console and forsake all others?
- antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@@emorym@@- Hey super-dumbass (I had to make a new title just for you!)... take a look at his PRIOR quote, you're the type that is typical of this crowd, but I can see now, leader material! And just in case, JUUUUSSSTTTT in case you're too stupid or lazy to see what I'm talking about, i'll quote him for ya "Now reconsider the whole 360 vs ps3 and you know whos gonna win..."
- Majin_Raditz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I can't wait.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"http://xboxmovies.teamxbox.com/xbox-360-hires/2755/Ghost-Recon-Advanced-Warfighter-HD-Trailer/"
notice at the end it says its availible for PS2.... - canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FANBOY BATTLE!!!
- EmoryM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... I'm a little suprised at some of your comments fellow digg members...
GunFingers - the storage medium can most definately have an affect on graphics... I'm honestly a little suprised you're so naive. Were you alive during the PS1 / N64 generation? If so, surely you remember why Final Fantasy 7 was so amazing... the storage space a CD offered versus a cartridge.
antitrace, you moron, playedalive posted a link to a video of that presentation in hi-def... he wasn't saying the PS3 was in hi-def. Going by your language though, such an oversight should surprise no one.
And finally, jarrod, are you trying to start a flame war with Nintendo fans? I don't understand the motivation... Nintendo is aiming for a games-only box featuring a little innovation that'll rely on quirky gameplay instead of ports. Hey, I just described the DS... which is still trumping the superior hardware of the PSP... sorry? - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"the polygon amount in Snake's mustache is the same as an enemy soldier in MGS3"
Wrong. Try again: "The number of polygons in the source model for Snake's mustache is the same as the in-game model of an enemy soldier in MGS3"
In other words, it is an apples to oranges comparison. The in-game version probable uses a very low poly model with normal mapping or displacement mapping to make it APPEAR as though it has that many polygons. - crickton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The demo looks stunning, but it's only a demo, and definitely not a demo of a big firefight. It does look nice tho. I'm excited to see what they can do when it's actual gameplay and we get some good comparisons of the PS3 and Xbox360.
And please, I don't think I can read another thing about how you're going to boycott the PS3 due to the rootkit incident. I think it's craptacular too, but that doesn't mean I'm going to go cozying up to Microsoft. Oh boy, it's election time all over again. Which is the lesser of two 'evils'? - mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I want to see some gameplay not some PoS vid...
- mikey601587, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I recently bought a xbox 360 with 6 games and was very dissapointed with the overall system. I mean the hype was soo huge that its just dumb. Xbox 360 sales in Japan are horrid they aren't stupid as us Americans believeing in all the hype. This is why PS3 will beat the 360 for next-gen. The titles! PS3 has soo many great developers going for them that microsoft doesn't and in the end whoever can make the best games will be on top...so forget about who has the best graphics...
- IntellectualSol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my wm10 wont ply it. it says somethin about a codec not workin

- magik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not very unbelievable considering there's only one character on screen
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nevermind...it just jumped to 700 and something. Digg is acting weird today...another story I just dugg reset itself to zero.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is this on the homepage with less than 30 diggs?
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are you freakin' serious!?! This looks sick! I'm such a fanboy. Bring on the SP3!
- argonlightray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice whatever system it goes to. The future of gaming is very bright right now and Boycott Sony? Let's give them some time. They still might turn around and figure ***** out. They are so close in many ways to being a great company.
