- userundefine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47The lack of a high-res photo is a crime.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Maybe its rarity depends on where you live. In the places where I've lived I have never seen one of these.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21My condolences.
- Pseudo98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Let me be the first of the Digg community to say congratuations, good for you.
Many thanks for bringing it to our attention also, most appreciated. - warlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16http://www.newscientist.com/data/images/ns/cms/mg19025564.700/mg19025564.700-1_750.jpg
A slightly bigger version - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17too bad it only takes up 1/16th of my screen.
I hate crappy news site pictures. - lava, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17for a sec I thought the headline was "Rare 'Rainbow' Spotted Over Idaho (potato)"
- Pimptastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ive seen these in Illinois. usualy 2-3 times a year ill see one. but this is the best photo one one ive seen.
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Yeah seriously. I've never seen anything like that before. That's frickin' amazing!
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The digg comment system didn't accept the characters in those links, use these instead.

- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6We get these all the time here in Central Indiana.
...I mean, it's not a ~normal~ occurence, but I've probably seen those at least as many times as I've seen rainbows. It might be one of those the-farther-north-you-are-the-cooler-the-atmospheric-phenoma-is things. - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Here's more good image searches.

- affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It'll be hard to find my pot of gold at the end of that rainbow.
- quamb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5have seen and taken a photo of one these whispy rainbows before, but not as 'wide' as the one here . still nice to see though.
http://www.everydayokay.com/media/photo/album/11.jpg - wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've seen very small ones in Canada (about the size of a tiny cloud) but nothing even close to that size. I didn't know what it was until I read this article.
- bhagany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So, what, the people who report seeing it rather often are lying? I live in Wisconsin, I would say I see this at least 5 times a year. I would say that it's less rare than a "normal" rainbow, although it's usually a lot more subtle than this particular one is. But, then again, I'm always looking at the sky.
I will say, though, that that's the biggest and brightest one I've ever seen. Many of them are barely even noticeable. That's probably why people are saying that they're rare. - froissart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cartman: Eh. I hate those things.
Kyle: Nobody hates rainbows.
Stan: Yeah. What's there to hate about rainbows?
Cartman: Well, you know. You'll just be sitting there, minding your own business, and they'll come marching in, and crawl up your leg, and start biting the inside of your ass, and you'll be all like, 'Hey. Get out of my ass you stupid rainbows.'
Stan: Cartman, what the hell are you talking about? - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I live in Illinois, and I have NEVER seen anything like this, but okay, Illinois is quite strange sometimes.
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree, its a very beautiful phenomenon.
- captainpete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah, the guy like ten posts above yours.

+pics: http://epod.usra.edu/archive/epodviewer.php3?oid=202592 - greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3that part of Idaho has the cleanest air in the state. eastern washington is also equally devoid of pollution. i seriously doubt pollution has anything to do with it.
- buglord, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I was wondering, how high would the probability be that air pollution could have enhanced refraction?
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahhh another moscow person!
- koffeekan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am from Idaho as well. There has been some really weird weather up here near Moscow lately. I would not doubt if this was down in Lewiston.
- endyminion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Let me get out my tin foil hat...
- bilco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A BIGGER picture would be great !!!
- veneman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a couple more beautiful pictures of this phenomenon on june 3, above Washington:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/austinspace/sets/72157594166742788/ - Infobahn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I (now) live in Idaho. This was seen over the Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls Idaho, Spokane Washington area (they are all within 20 miles of each other.
The goofy weather people at the local stations could not agree what type of phenomenon this was. I understood it to me a Sun Dog. - buglord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2why? If I remember correctly, CFCs for example can remain in the upper levels of the atmosphere for decades. IANAM, though
- knobtwiddler, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1ITS A CHEMBOW, PEOPLE... ITS DIFFRACTION CAUSED BY BARIUM NITRATE AEROSOL THAT CAME OUT OF A PLANE... SWEET GOD HAVE MERCY ON US ALL... WAKE THE F UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND GOOGLE CHEMTRAILS.
CENTCOM DIGG DOWN NOW. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, great photo.
- kivimaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw it - it happened about a month ago. It was visible even in Eastern Washington (Spokane).
It is called a circumhorizon arch. It was not your standard rainbow - the colors were extremely rich and bright.
http://www.sundog.clara.co.uk/halo/chaim8.htm - ickabodaikin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've only seen these type scenes as Photoshop output. :)
David - AlexisMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a great link on the science of atmospheric optics....
http://www.atoptics.co.uk/ - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This was fake when it was on the front page last week...
- autok2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is a follow up on the chemtrail connection. No conspiracy with aliens and JFK, but if you think this is "normal", you're pretty naive:
http://www.weatherwars.info/index.php?news_id=71&start=0&category_id=&parent_id=0&arcyear=&arcmonth=
"Vibration and resonance are being used to stand these ice crystals on end for purposes other than to create beautiful ice rainbows. These now exceedingly common Crare circum-horizontal arcs are yet another calling card of man's manipulation of this planet's atmosphere. Get used to them!" - jaspinDroid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1autok2 is right, it's a classic chembow.
- thekak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2-Digg. I've seen these all over the place, lame. Not rare thanks.
- djhash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The Spanish
