- damien1989, on 06/24/2009, -2/+161Thats *****. Thousands of People upload to RapidShare every minute, How the hell are they supposed to filter all of the content uploaded?
- LedZepAddict, on 06/24/2009, -1/+93Thats the problem with these fines and laws. The people passing them hardly understand the technology, if at all, and ask for impossible things simply showing the know nothing about what they are talking about.

By all means, tell the man how to avoid international litigation when dealing with illegally uploaded material. You're clearly qualified- my bad.
P.S. I love the curtains, was that photo taken at your law firm? - sockpuppets, on 06/24/2009, -6/+87Get a lawyer. If you're looking to cover your ass with the advice of thousands of out of school teenagers on digg then you've already failed.
- harrythe3rd, on 06/24/2009, -5/+64There's always MegaUpload
- Ymeg, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6034 million is absolutely outrageous. It's almost like they said "***** it" and picked a random, arbitrary number from a hat.
- bigteebo, on 06/24/2009, -1/+58RapidShare should make them solve an impossible captcha to make sure it's a real judge and not a judgebot ordering this fine. Also, a 60 second wait. Premium members get to sue for $60 million!
- Spade914, on 06/24/2009, -5/+54*Obligatory "***** the RIAA" comment*
- ericdano, on 06/24/2009, -4/+49Of all the download sites, I hate Rapidshare. But I do obtain a lot of stuff from it.
- an0nymous, on 06/24/2009, -3/+47I bet this will be just as effective as shutting down napster was.
That's why there is no piracy today, you know. - strictnein, on 06/24/2009, -11/+54I've filed DMCA notices with Rapidshare. They actually responded relatively quickly and pulled the offending files about an hour after I submitted the completed request.
Google, on the other hand, did not respond at all, even though the site in question was hosted on their servers (blogspot), had pirated content, and had adsense ads (which is a violation of the adsense TOS). - acknotSW, on 06/24/2009, -1/+39And once again people are wondering why the IT guy is in his office alone laughing so hard he can hardly breath. Thank you sockpuppets, that was marvelous.
- trer, on 06/24/2009, -4/+38Technology > old people making laws
- Chelks, on 06/24/2009, -0/+33"Update: We got lost in translation for a moment that’s why we initially reported that Rapidshare was fined $34 million. This information was wrong, the court only stated that the value of the tracks was estimated at $34 million. The article is updated accordingly and we’re sorry for the confusion."

UPGRADE NOW
DOWNLOAD LIMIT REACHED - strictnein, on 06/24/2009, -5/+37I'm really curious: why are people burying me? Are you upset that I would try and stop the piracy of my software? It's awesome when search results for sites linking to pirated copies of your software appear above your own site.
I've got this crazy belief that I want to pay the developers and artists who I worked with. Maybe I should just forget that silly notion. - daPhoenix, on 06/24/2009, -2/+31_Regional court_.
They'll just file a complaint and have it tried again at federal court. - searcade, on 06/24/2009, -4/+32I run a service like Rapidshare and its growing popular, what steps should i take to prevent something like this from happening to me? i wasn't worried about this before but this article shocked me.
- Mihai12345, on 06/24/2009, -3/+29@petersoncapetersonca and awesomeR0B0T:
How do you expect them to filter passworded files, like encrypted .rar archives ? - Mican, on 06/24/2009, -2/+28megaupload ***** over rapidshare
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -2/+28So IP block Germany and move on. Big deal.
- swicken, on 06/24/2009, -1/+26sockpuppets wins 1 internets.
- FredFredrickson, on 06/24/2009, -4/+28That sucks for RapidShare, but frankly, you can't host thousands of copyrighted files and expect nothing to happen in this day and age.
- Tetromos, on 06/24/2009, -0/+24Great, where am I going to get my CDs when I'm too lazy to torrent?!
- xDynaBlade, on 06/24/2009, -1/+22That's ridiculous. RapidShare's main use is for porn, not music. What the *****.
- sockpuppets, on 06/24/2009, -6/+26So long, and thanks for all the phish.
- davidsmero, on 06/24/2009, -0/+18I almost choked on my sandwich when I read sockpuppets comment. Well done sir, I salute you.
- Upon66, on 06/24/2009, -1/+19or MediaFire
- Majora26, on 06/24/2009, -0/+18Answer is simple: Artists should stop existing, therefore nothing to pirate.
- tj111, on 06/24/2009, -1/+19Rapidshare should block German IP addresses. It solves the problem, makes a point, and also prevents them having to manually filter millions of uploads (which isn't possible).
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -2/+18Yeah, honestly you should just work for free. I know I don't want to pay you.
- jakem1, on 06/24/2009, -0/+15I suspect they don't care about the how. I also suspect that they know exactly how hard it will be to enforce the ruling and hope that that will lead to shutting down Rapidshare or gimping it so badly that customers leave in droves.
- LedZepAddict, on 06/24/2009, -1/+15First off its "offered a paid [no "for" required] service..."
Second, they also offered their service free for public use, and only an idiot, or member of lawmaking body in this case, would think they only hosted illegal or copyrighted content. Technology like bittorrent, peer to peer, or rapidshare do have shady uses true, but they have so many useful and legal uses. Sharing your family photos with all your relatives across the world in an efficient and rapid way like bittorrent is truly impressive. Only idiots chose to view the world from one perspective. - Llanowar, on 06/24/2009, -1/+14***** GEMA
- diggduggjoe, on 06/24/2009, -2/+15@ maz2331, glad you are not my ISP, but I run into problems with your type all the time.
Why can't I send an encrypted file? I have a many clients that need to move data and having it be in the clear is not wise. Why the big deal with encrypted files? Unless the receiver knows the password no payload can be delivered.
Such a practice ruins the benefits of email. *****, no zip files, no pdfs or banning attachments altogether. Just as well turn off the mail servers. - juniorb, on 06/24/2009, -0/+13Good point. Cars are also used by criminals to transport dead bodies, drugs, weapons, and other illegal items. We don't make cars illegal do we? No.
/obligatory car analogy - appleofdischord, on 06/24/2009, -0/+13Make a few token terminations and suspensions to show that you are "monitoring" for copyrighted content. That way, when they take you to task you can say "I'm trying", and they shouldn't be able to fine you.
- digghasnoethics, on 06/24/2009, -2/+15Rapidshare is in Switzerland
GEMA is in Germany
Answer is a single digit and reference to the limits of jurisdiction, surely? - Meocross, on 06/24/2009, -1/+13JDownloader + Rapidshare + AFK = WON THE GAME
- glitchbit, on 06/24/2009, -1/+13interesting, do you have stats that show that your sales increased after having sent DMCA notices to these sites?
Unless your software is prohibitively expensive I can't see it being worth your time.. - senae, on 06/24/2009, -1/+12*Obligatory "this has nothing to do with the RIAA" comment*
- ceemeister, on 06/24/2009, -2/+13Update: We got lost in translation for a moment that’s why we initially reported that Rapidshare was fined $34 million. This information was wrong, the court only stated that the value of the tracks was estimated at $34 million. The article is updated accordingly and we’re sorry for the confusion.
- jeremymccurdy, on 06/24/2009, -2/+13Even if you PAY for it, it only lets you download about 3 gigs a day.
- Rudegar, on 06/24/2009, -0/+10which they will have an easier time sueing now that they got precedence
- DemDude, on 06/24/2009, -2/+12The GEMA is pretty much the German RIAA, so it was kind of okay...
- craigm01, on 06/24/2009, -1/+11@Petersonca
That's not how it works. Rapidshare is a digital storage locker.
If I rent space a self store, put a lock on and give my friends the keys. It's not up to the self store people to monitor what's in my locker. In fact in the USA it's ILLEGAL for them to unless you are evicted or they are served a warrant!
If you start imposing these kind of restrictions on businesses that have hundreds of legitimate uses, you are killing inovation!! - w1cked1, on 06/24/2009, -0/+10Or they should just move any servers out of Germany and tell them to go and ***** themselves.
- Darrelc, on 06/24/2009, -1/+10sockpuppets, you win.
toxicityj what the hell is with your wall being so dirty? - IAmRoot, on 06/24/2009, -3/+12@awesomeR0B0T
Meh. It's not too bad with SkipScreen. Just open up each piece bunch of tabs and let it do the work. Firefox extensions FTW. - EllimistX, on 06/24/2009, -1/+10I usually enjoy your comments, sockpuppets, but that was in a class of its own. Well done, sir.
