- bannus, on 02/09/2008, -2/+47***** THE RIAA
- Senn, on 02/09/2008, -1/+41Well he can muse the ***** off.
- streetstealth, on 02/09/2008, -2/+27Speaking of musing, remember how EMI was "musing" about abandoning the RIAA, which would likely start a domino effect destroying that very organization Sherman chairs?
Let's hope EMI starts to muse a little faster. Unlike Sherman's, their musings are quite possible in the real world! - NICU, on 02/09/2008, -1/+21I'd make a deal with the RIAA - if I install their crappy filter on my computer then they pay me back $15 for every CD that I don't share with my friends. Unfortunately my friends didn't want to steal music lately because most of the new stuff sucks :-(
- CypherXero, on 02/09/2008, -0/+19A simple statement that never gets old.
- xtremesniper, on 02/09/2008, -1/+20I don't agree with him when he says he would pay $15 a month to be able to move all his tracks to portable media players. That's just another subscription fee that I would NOT be willing to pay.
I do agree though that they should just sell lossless music files for $8 or whatever a pop. Seeing as how you can easily buy a CD, rip it to your computer in any format you want, and distribute it if you really wanted to, I don't see how it would be any different if they just offered up the files themselves. - tinkafoo, on 02/09/2008, -1/+19Yeah, and we're "simply musing" about NEVER BUYING A RIAA-BASED PRODUCT AGAIN.
Fair enough. - chris9902, on 02/09/2008, -1/+18maybe he should spend less time "musing" and more time learning how the ***** the internet works.
- BigBallistix, on 02/09/2008, -3/+16And I was "simply musing" about unzipping, watching and then redistributing that 300Gbs worth of illegal movies I downloaded -this weekend.
- fvereen, on 02/09/2008, -1/+10Forced filtering to make sure I don't steal music? Give me a break. There are so many reasons why that wouldn't work, but what I find so scary is that anyone at the RIAA honestly thinks that anyone would be stupid enough to sacrifice even *more* of our privacy for this inane idea. When's that revolucíon the writer mentioned?
- paintpro, on 02/09/2008, -1/+9A subscription to a service that offers unlimited downloads of DRM-free files is all I ask for.
- truck87bp, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7I'm not a music nut at all, hardly any music on my computer but I do read whats happening with the RIAA and how they seem to be tearing the business apart buy their own hand. Your absolute greed seems to be destroying your business model. Want it back? Increase the percentage you give to Artists, like double or triple ( your contracts sound like they really blow ). I could care less about you because you don't about anyone but I'd rather take a pay-cut for a while instead of loosing my bread and butter totally. At 60, I don't see the digital age leaving anytime soon and I can assure you that I'll miss out on a bunch when I'm gone.
P.S. I still listen to music in the car and my wife, well she buys too many CD's for 1 or 2 songs and she's about to change her business model. - Amazetbm, on 02/09/2008, -1/+7Their members need to re-write their business model to adapt to this new medium. They've adapted in the past, so there shouldn't be a problem now. The RIAA is already losing support from EMI, bands are creating their own business models, songs from their early catalogs are about to be public domain, major artists are not renewnig contracts and indie labels are doing pretty well in the long tale. Get with the program instead of trying to hinder progress.
- MrBabyMan, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6Settle down, Slappy.
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -1/+6Why are you "respectfully" suggesting anything? Respect is earned, and these ***** haven't earned *****.
- szyzyg, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5The digital music business is a game of compromises...
You can get a subscription that allows unlimted downloading, but the downloads expire if you stop paying the subscription (napster, rhapsody)
You can get a subscription for DRM free downloads, but the catalog is indie labels only (emusic)
You can pay $0.99 each fro DRM free downloads.
Or if you just want free you can listen to any tune ever recorded, but no downloads (imeem & last.fm)
(if you're in the US then imeem has more music, in Europe last.fm is better) - greevar, on 02/09/2008, -2/+6$8 for lossless? I hate to be a pessimist but nobody will buy CD's over that when the can just download them for free.
- mogebier, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4There was a time when the record companies were not ruled by the Bean Counters. They would only sign artists that were GOOD. Now, as long as you have 1 single in you, they will sign you to make the money. Same with the movie industry.
- bonarez, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4He's just dreaming about the (for him) good old days when there was a business model where they had artists and fans tied with thumbscrews
technology has given the power back to the people *****, get over it and count the ***** of money you made on the back of the artists over all those years - zephyr42, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3And never will until they're *gone*
Then it will turn from "obligatory" to "nostalgic" ***** THE RIAA - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3The music is ***** today. Make your own and tell the RIAA to go blow a dead bear!
- QuickeningYak, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3Hey, that's funny. I was "simple musing" just yesterday about his female relatives doing Asian donkey porn.
- PHiZ187, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3The fact that this would even enter their thought process betrays the fact that they are, at their core, pathologically out of step with what consumers want.
- sophiaperennis, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2In the same way, that people are musing over music that is available online. In that instance, the RIAA would consider that piracy. It's not: Just Musing DUDE!
- chris9902, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2epic ***** fail.
- shaundee, on 02/09/2008, -1/+3Muse on this - you're a *****.
- cliffski, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2because its so badly coded that its not easy to use? get a life.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+3...and when we criticize them they call it BS.
Right now, I'm musing about destroying the entire ***** world. But that's just a musing. - B1GR3D, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2I still have my first cd player i bought in the mid 80's and I distinctly remember reading then about the music industry would keep cd prices at certain levels and above cassette prices even though they admitted cd's cost less to produce. I would never argue that artists and the music industry shouldn't get paid. But, bonarez is right technology has changed the game and they need to adapt, without compromising my privacy. The real solution is for the artist to use the new technology and cut out the middle man. The riaa should only track uses outside of direct sales(ie using an artist's work in productions and broadcasting etc).
- ZekeSulastin, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Horrible solutions proposed by RIAA, meet problem.
- megabytehl, on 02/09/2008, -1/+3He should spend his time musing over his *****-tastic music rather than my computer
- Shaman760, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2I stopped supporting RIAA backed bands years ago. Independent music is so much more honest.
- bwdd, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2Great, now big brother will be watching me in another way.
- Funkleft, on 02/09/2008, -1/+2Well I think honestly, all people who give a damn should never pay for any music coming out of RIAA. EMI, Warner, Sony, Universal. If they, or any label associated puts out music, don't buy it new. Buy it used, download it, but do not give them money. We all know we can get music other ways, so at least let us stop giving them the money they want so badly.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+2 It is called Vista...No filter here (Linux user.)
- lotsa1s, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1That was inexcusably terrible.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1Nah, it's always been like that with both industries. It's just that the good stuff filters out over the years and all the crap (disco IMO) settles down into the gutter where it belongs.
- natepilling, on 09/01/2008, -1/+2Why make the consumer pay for something the business messed up on? That's their fault, why push it off on us?
- tech42er, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Could be soon. EMI was bought by a private equity firm and is considering pulling out of the RIAA and IFPI. Private equity guys are pretty rational and don't like pouring millions of dollars into generating bad publicity.
- paker, on 02/09/2008, -1/+2X2
- heystoopid, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1got buried under his own self generated crap and his head is still stuck up the other end though !
- tech42er, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Well, EMI might break it now that they're under new management. Maybe we should make sure that EMI gets more business than Warner, Sony, and Universal and slightly better publicity to reassure them they're moving in the right direction. If we continue to yell "***** THE RIAA" and make sure to boycott Warner, Universal, and Sony, while buying a little from EMI and give the EMI praise for moving away, they'll listen to us. They want to re-invent themselves, and they'll do it by leaving the RIAA. Hopefully.
- NCTintedBlue, on 02/09/2008, -2/+2Even if the model was geared completely toward the consumer, they would continue to steal and pretend it's for a good cause.
- seraph65, on 02/09/2008, -2/+2Screw the RIAA. Screw Windows for that matter, if this happens (which it will...)
- xkorbin, on 02/09/2008, -1/+1Okay. I just hate to say that, people are getting their panties in a ringer over nothing. There are so many reasons this couldn't work..
A few:
1) Alternative OS/Architecture Support... Too many flavours of too many OSes to even think about something like this.
2) Enforcement - Want to try?
3) Compression, etc.
These are just stupid issues, I just can't even begin to explain how dumb this is. - LightSpeed4, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0its so ***** that everyone wants to pirate it. rofl idiot pirates cant even think
- guerrilla_suit, on 02/09/2008, -3/+3I thought the filter on my computer was called VISTA.
- vincentweber, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0Why make such a big deal out of this? Just don't freakin' install the filter on your pc. Who does the RIAA think she is anyway?! The law?
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+1If RP can get to the front page dozens and dozens of times can't some of the more innovative music sharing websites make it?
If these kids REALLY wanted to throw the fear of God into the RIAA they'd start using websites like this. - vincentweber, on 02/10/2008, -1/+0Everyone can code for Linux. This is a little fanboyism. I pulled your post from -1 to 0 diggs because you are right that when you switch to Linux you don't have this DRM crap anymore.
