- stonedslacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Isn't azureus completely open-source and hosted on Sourceforge. I doubt its doing anything against our interests unless there is some concrete proof.
And if there is concrete proof, thats really bad news, as you cant even trust GNU projects blindly anymore in such a case. - EztliNahua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Azureus is open-source, so I REALLY doubt that it has been reporting all that for the last year. Also, how about showing us some proof?
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I don't buy it, an "anonymous private source"? No mention on the webpage? Good luck with that "sekrat" reporting when the code is available for download, I don't see ***** in there about reporting to the ZomgRIAA or MPAA. If you don't believe me, go download a copy yourself, any decent java programmer could tell you the same:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/
I call ***** on this article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16utorrent is not an opensource client.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12you can use utorrent 1.6.474 and azureus 2.5.0.4 are the "safe builds"
- Sithlrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11There n ur pcz watchin ur piratingz
- luaplevap, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12*Azureus, but yeah. Pretty scary stuff, although the danger is really the same as it always was, anyone from anti-file sharing organizations could dl a torrent and get your info. Good read.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9inspired by my ass, he stole it...
http://www.ninjatune.net/ninjashop/index.php?cat=4&type=Other&by=6&code=NLOGO#NLOGO - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10You do know that Piratebay isn't buying Sealand right...
- sngx1275, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This doesn't have anything to do with the platform, so no OS arguments here.
Also, Azureus is the only client that works on lots of trackers for OS X. Until there is a good one that is worth a ***** I'm going to have to keep using Azureus. - darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ahh, the cry of the non-developer. Sure..."we'll" get right on it....
- GTanaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I call FUD.
"Will Azureus send a list of what I download to other people?
No! As mentioned before, the source code is available on Sourceforge, so if you're not happy to take our word for it, go and check it out.
The Zudeo UI will check for updates of the metadata (thumbnail, title, rating, etc) of zudeo content. The classic UI does not. Zudeo does not store these new metadata requests anywhere. It simply reads the request and returns the metadata.. much like how winamp brings up track info about the CD you are playing. "
http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Azureus_2_and_Zudeo - LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, I kind of figured the sale of µTorrent would end up being a disaster somehow. Goddammit.
- killa62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why dont we just do a fork of Azureus and keep it clean?
- metallikop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's not bogus on either account, be worried about this. Oh, and the guy that runs this site is stealing logos, from indie artists no less. Don't give this guy traffic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Regarding uTorrent:
uTorrent was sold to BitTorrent Inc. which is indeed owned by Braham Cohen.
BitTorrent Inc. made an agreement with the MPAA to prevent piracy - http://www.bittorrent.com/2006-05-09-Warner-Bros.myt - jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yeah, Linux has some great torrent clients. KTorrent is my favorite, it's completely taken over the place of azureus for me, with much better resource usage too!
But anyway, the 2.x.x series of Azureus clients will always be open source, anybody can come along and fork the project to continue making an open client that doesn't suck. Same thing with utorrent, and same thing with the original bittorrent client. So really, there's NO problem here at all. It's just bittorrent developers cashing in on stupid investors, with no real impact on the community whatsoever. - Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5
Time for a new open source ssh encrypted, onion routing, bit torrent client with SSL certificates etc etc. - maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The truth.
http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Azureus_2_and_Zudeo - darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@stonedslacker:
Just because its open source doesn't mean its not doing something wrong (especially if everyone just takes the attitude that because its open source it can't possibly be doing evil).
Just because we have the option to find out what its been doing doesn't mean we always exercise that option (though I'm sure someone will be along shortly to verify / discount the claim). - maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Zudeo is simply an interface change to Azureus. And no more information than azureus originally did gets collected. If you bothered to read the azureus wiki then you'd know that Zudeo is not an enforced change and is merely a skin.
If you don't want to buy the DRM content you don't have to. It doesn't change the fact that it's the best BT client that exists. And it's open source and that will never change, the Az team has committed to that, all this is is one of the major BT clients legitimizing itself, and why the hell not?! Frankly i don't have a problem with that, since it's not a bad service.
Zudeo and Azureus both run on the 2.5. Read for yourself.
http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Azureus_2_and_Zudeo - DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ktorrent gets much love from me. Just about everything I could want and with a KDE interface. Perfect.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4OMG, not Utorrent, for the love of god, not utorrent!!! :(
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Moocat
Um, they never mention an "anonymous private source"
Also, they could have added more code before they compiled. What's on sourceforge does not always equal what's in the binary distribution (which is what everyone uses.)
For anyone using Azureus I would recommend compiling it yourself, from source you trust, until all of this is resolved - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7off topic- this guy stole his logo from ninja tune. ninjatune.net
- Sanchez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2TINFOIL
- LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ prelude: BiTorrent, Inc., isn't so much "owned" by Bram Cohen anymore, although he is the CEO:
http://www.bittorrent.com/management.html
But being CEO doesn't necessarily mean he controls the company anymore. See: the phrase "kicked upstairs." - SuperHyperKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If it's possible, I call partial BS on this article. Yes I believe it IS possible hat this can be done, and it may be done with the new Zudeo client. But I HIGHLY doubt this is being done with the current Azureus and uTorrent clients. Azureus is open source, now I'm not a programmer, but it seems like this shouldn't be that hard to check and officially call BS on. I have used both clients, but don't use either one anymore, but still the thought of the XXAA buying clients is something I don't even want to think about. We need to start a DiggTorrent client. ROFL. Oh well, hopefully this isn't true.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"sell content protected by digital rights management"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zudeo - wisie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a load of crap
- JohnnySoftware, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Actually, during a lawsuit a plaintiff can have the court demand the server logs and stuff and this is what has been happening in music piracy lawsuits.
It not only holds up in court - the court is insisting the data be given over. Many pirates believe that their P2P file sharing services cannot or choose not to keep logs. Under pressure, this has been repeatedly revealed not to be the case.
P2P services seem reluctant to admit it but when push comes to shove, they do. - Viva43, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2im sure i sound stupid, but there's lots of jargon in that article, can someone put it in layman's terms?
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK people, time to list all free torrent clients here so everyone on Digg can be safe (what? I know YOU use it for... stuff).
- Thater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article spells it fine. Only the submitter spelled it wrong.
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This seems like FUD. No proof, or anything even resembling proof.
But who would spread FUD about BitTorrent clients...?
Oh, right: http://www.mafiaa.org - JohnnySoftware, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Do you know who all the investors are for the proxy server and what their motives are for operating the proxy server?
Suppose they are just collecting information that they will one day sell? They are not telling you to do anything illegal or tortuous. Do you begrudge them the right to make a little money a couple years down the road?
Or perhaps that is not on the up and up or practical. Suppose they send the RIAA and MPAA monthly copies of their logs on a subscription basis? Price of settling a single piracy case ranges from several thousand out of court to a couple of million in court.
The business case for this seems pretty sound. IANAL but it seems like in this scenario, barring extenuating factors - the only one doing anything wrong is the pirate.
Basically, the lesson is nothing shields you from "the danger". - kaplanfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it specify in the EULA that it is sending data to the RIAA? If not, the data would not hold up in court. In fact the RIAA would specifically not want to aquire data this way if they were trying to build a legitimate case against anyone.
-Kap - JRBlack10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So where do you find these older builds of Azureus and uTorrent? In case you weren't smart enough to keep older builds around just in case you would need them.
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't using a proxy shield you from this danger?
- tilleyrw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the love of God, let us stop this senseless talking about Luddite conspiracy about uTorrent!
Cut to the chase with some links to these verboten "custom-engineered" builds of uTorrent.
Simple as that. - maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why???
Az is still the same as before, just with a new UI.
http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Azureus_2_and_Zudeo - kaplanfx, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Whoa dude, delayed response :)
- Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Azureus may be the best open source bit torrent client that exists, however I still find uTorrent to be better. I like a clean interface, not one full of statistic views that are essentially useless to the average user. It's nice that Azureus is available and the number of views and features available is fantastic, but I really don't think telling people it's the best around is the right plan. After all, you're the one they're going to call on when they switch to a swarm view and can't find out how to get back to their torrent progress.
- zerock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"lso, Azureus is the only client that works on lots of trackers for OS X. Until there is a good one that is worth a ***** I'm going to have to keep using Azureus."
bitrocket works on some of those just fine, it got banned, but the dev worked to get the client accepted. - JavaTN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not necessairly because it is still their client. its going to report information, regardless... so a proxy from them wouldnt work unless you are running through the proxy from another location.
- andyrobo60, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@darksheer
Azureus has so many users that I think we can safely assume that a few people have gone throw the source. If it is found to be working with the RIAA/MPAA then someone will take the source from azureus and just take out the offending code and re release it under a different name. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3rtorrent
- Woek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Absolutely! Very small resource footprint, and plenty of features. Stick it under a 'screen' and you can leave it running completely unobtrusively.
- darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2You're using the wrong (or at least a different definition of "Free")
You're talking Free as in beer. The article is talking about Free as in Freedom:
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_beer - Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Proof would be nice.. I do however see this zudeo on the AZ site. Someone get slyck on the case...
