- bmatherlyjr, on 02/07/2008, -0/+168Great, novel idea! Oh wait. I do online banking. I am not going to risk my luxury of conducting encrypting bill pay transaction because this ass clown wants to place a death grip on his monopoly.
- doublebackslash, on 02/07/2008, -3/+127I know this story.
Happened to my grandma a while back. She got senile before she died as well. - Senn, on 02/07/2008, -2/+76Good luck with that. There's no way you're getting anything like that on my Linux box.
- sacherjj, on 02/07/2008, -2/+75Don't worry, it won't run on Linux. That means we're fine.
- wageslaven, on 02/07/2008, -4/+75I remember during the height of the Napster furor, a Sony executive (Sony Pictures Entertainment US senior VP Steve Heckler) came along and said (direct quote):
"The [music] industry will take whatever steps it needs to protect itself and protect its revenue streams..It will not lose that revenue stream, no matter what."
"Sony is going to take aggressive steps to stop this. We will develop technology that transcends the individual user. We will firewall Napster at source - we will block it at your cable company, we will block it at your phone company, we will block it at your [ISP]. We will firewall it at your PC.
"These strategies are being aggressively pursued because there is simply too much at stake."
This story is not a suprise to anyone who pays attention; Sony is one of the most zealous anti-fair use members of the RIAA and MPAA. They are trying to bend technology to enforce their copyrights.
The internet erupted in revulsion at their hubris and gaul at the time, but I fear many people dont remember what they are up to -- especially here at Digg.
This is *EXACTLY* what the PS3 and BlueRay is about. 100% designed to protect Sony's MPAA and RIAA "revenue streams".
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2000/08/23/we_will_bl ... - EvilMoose, on 02/07/2008, -0/+69Why hello there RIAA. I don't even pirate your music. In fact, your music these days are pure crap and not even worth the time/effort to pirate. Please keep your hands off my computer, kthnxbai.
- etandrib, on 02/07/2008, -0/+54The same logic goes with the government wanting access to everyone's email in the name of national security. If anyone is trying to hide something - they are going to HIDE it. Filtering is doomed from the beginning. I'm actually surprised that more bit-torrent trackers and clients don't offer encryption already. Of course in two months they will if AT&T tries to filter.
What the RIAA (and the labels they represent) is give the people what they want! Convenient, cheap, digital music, and movies. I'm convinced that if the price is right people will pay for the value and not pirate. Sure you'll have some piracy but they can leverage that with viral advertisements that can more than make up for "lost" revenue. They just need to get it out of there heads that they can control the whole system and learn how to make money with the system. - mrfreeziexp, on 02/07/2008, -0/+51I'd like to see Microsoft employ this technology in Windows 7, see how many people switch to Linux then. Oh, one thing I didn't think about, Linux would probably become illegal. I can hear it now, "Next up on Fox News, How the CIA and FBI are combating illegal, terrorist, far left-wing computer systems."
- DarkNemesis618, on 02/07/2008, -0/+47The RIAA is pissing me off more and more, but I guess I'm not suprised...
- julianwan, on 02/07/2008, -1/+43oh ***** off already riaa
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+38Cary Sherman is a ***** trying to save the dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs who sue their most enthusiastic customers.
Hey, how about instead of ***** with a couple hundred million PCs we just shut down the RIAA.
It would be far more cost effective, and artists would finally get what they deserve rather than the crumbs. - rzxc, on 02/07/2008, -1/+35Yet another story that should lead everyone to the obvious conclusion: don't buy labelware. The sooner they go out of business, the sooner we won't have to deal with this crap.
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -4/+36***** THE RIAA
- GodjustGod, on 02/07/2008, -1/+23These people just need to die already.
- pgm_01, on 02/07/2008, -0/+21You don't think FUbuntu, Ububtu with filters, will be a big hit?
- dogstar0125, on 02/07/2008, -0/+21Why would they waste their time and ours putting forward a strategy that they know won't work? If anything, this is a threat to Microsoft since it would be relatively easy to implement something like this in a monopoly OS, but very difficult to implement it in a world with many diverse operating systems.
- Scynet, on 02/07/2008, -0/+21And on top of that, the RIAA is facing the same problem as anti-virus companies. We all know we're not going to see a day without some sort of virus/malware always running rampant. Antivirus programs can only block viruses AFTER they identify them, which means new viruses will always have a headstart for as long as there are virus writers, and they're not going anywhere.
Similarly, "pirates" aren't going anywhere, and they'll always have the headstart with new methods of spreading files which RIAA can't block until they find them. The only option for RIAA is to have complete control of the internet, which is likely what they're now trying to do. - freezeout, on 02/07/2008, -2/+22ok now they're just gettin' crazy with this *****
- Mykal73, on 02/07/2008, -0/+18They forgot the first rule of security, once someone has physical access to any security scheme, it will be broken. It's just a matter of time.
- f4nt0m4s, on 02/07/2008, -1/+19Do you guys wanna hear a funny joke....
The RIAA. - Spanq, on 02/07/2008, -1/+17***** morons. This kind of thinking is why the RIAA has been losing the battle.
- norman619, on 02/07/2008, -1/+17And if you pay attention to history every attempt has met with epic failure. Bluray will be no different. Sony is a contemptible company. The company I work for decided last year to no longer purchase Sony products. Our exp with what passes in their company as customer service and technical support left a nasty taste in our mouths. In the wise words of my manager, "***** Sony!" That was the first and only time I ever heard the man curse. LOL!!!
- holybjork, on 02/07/2008, -1/+17The second they start paying artists what they deserve will be the second I let them touch my computer...
but that won't ever happen... so I don't have anything to worry about... - freezeout, on 02/07/2008, -0/+15here's something I've always wondered: If I DL a Jimi Hendrix album off of P2P, how is that "hurting the artist"?
- DeFex, on 02/07/2008, -1/+16everyone put a turd in a USPS approved manilla envelope and mail it to Cary Sherman C/O the RIAA!
- norman619, on 02/07/2008, -1/+16I love azureus because it does offer encryption.
- capiCrimm, on 02/07/2008, -0/+14"Only terrorists use GPG." ~ said by a politician sometime in the next 10 years.
- spyd3rweb, on 02/07/2008, -0/+13Seconded, I only grab ancient out of print music, If i could send the artists money I would but most are dead. New music is mostly pure *****.
- vibrokatana, on 02/07/2008, -1/+14***** the RIAA never gets lame.
- domness, on 02/07/2008, -0/+13Okay, this is never going to work! If you think about it, how many people (i.e. torrent downloaders) are going to let filtering software work on their computer? People are always going to find ways around it.
Also, just think about the amount of times the filter will probably alert the RIAA or some other ***** organization (if you could even call them organized) when you probably aren't even doing something illegal.
Did someone say Big Brother? - Piss off RIAA. Digg don't want ya. - vibrokatana, on 02/07/2008, -8/+20The OS is open, the only obscure ones are the closed source trash collectors (primarily Windows & OSX)
- SilverBlade2k, on 02/07/2008, -0/+12Good luck. No one will install filtering software.
If it comes included with Windows..we'll just find ways around it..
And if it is on the processor, we just won't upgrade... - technoredneck, on 02/07/2008, -0/+12I love this man. He makes me laugh so hard.
- Zlorp, on 02/07/2008, -0/+11O RIAALY
- aimhelix, on 02/07/2008, -1/+12I dunno about you mr. Riaa Boss.. but you're not touching my PC. ***** off.
- jeffsback2223, on 02/07/2008, -0/+11It's my belief that piracy is boycotting the industry. You aren't supporting them, are you? The IRAA is basically squirming in their death beds. So I think it's safe to say boycotting the IRAA is really impacting the industry.
- LeeTXJD, on 02/07/2008, -0/+11Didn't Microsoft already do this with HD content and Windows Vista??!
It isn't such a big step to start protecting the audio channel. - alex1015, on 02/07/2008, -2/+13tl;dr
- Aharoni, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10Saying that "More than half of computer users never used Linux OS" is like saying there are "over 3% of the American population does not like George W. Bush".
I think its a tad more than that... - gradivus, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10charge $.05 a song and $1 a movie download and give the artists 99% of the total revenue or DIAF assclown.
- Maddoktor2, on 02/07/2008, -0/+8If this comes to pass, the proposed filtering foistware will be regarded and treated as the malware/spyware it really is.
- etandrib, on 02/07/2008, -3/+11I think it is really naive of you to think that you can start a boycott that will make any sort of difference in this large of an industry. You may hurt them in the sort run but seriously you might as well send emails to all your friends too - sorry it doesn't work that way. The labels will fail because of bad business decisions and poor incentives. I don't buy music because it sucks. It really does. Oh, and that goes for non "labelware" music as well.
- MalDON, on 02/07/2008, -0/+8Don't underestimate how stupid Balmer can be.
- tendonut, on 02/07/2008, -0/+7Its like ***** the same girl every day, but she learns new moves each time you do it.
- DarkDx, on 02/07/2008, -0/+7Stop over-compression (there was an article in the FP weeks ago).
Stop releasing the same ***** every year.
Make albums that I actually want to buy because I like ALL of at least the MAJORITY of the songs, not one or two.
Stop auto-pitching.
Make a legal way to buy FLACs and High quality music online. (Some people love flac but finding a flac torrent seeded is hard and sometimes you cannot find the CD in the stores, because.. well... the mainstream albums are not flac-worthy).
With this, RIAA, you will see piracy decreasing, not all piracy but the majority of it (example: I don't make a lot of money so I won't buy CDs which have only 1-2 songs I like. Now, if I liked 5 or 6 I would buy it asap.). - Bennito, on 02/07/2008, -0/+7There is no such thing as security... These things are just obstacles.
- colonels1020, on 02/07/2008, -1/+8Time to switch to Linux!
- Yage2006, on 02/07/2008, -0/+7Why dont they move that filter up there ass.
- norman619, on 02/07/2008, -1/+8Why do you even care what we think about your buying a 360? I find that funny.
- twiztidsinz, on 02/07/2008, -0/+7FUBUntu brought to you by F.U.B.U.
