- KineticShampoo, on 06/16/2008, -1/+18I still wouldn't trust it. I'd look behind my shoulder to see if it really is behind me.
- carguy25, on 06/16/2008, -1/+17Strange.
- MattFid, on 06/16/2008, -0/+15This invention would be way more useful if it were shopping carts in a grocery store. I need my specific cart to follow me more than I need a specific chair. But kudos on the technology.
- ysss, on 06/16/2008, -0/+11I hope it comes with a creepy soundtrack.
- themadrammer, on 08/18/2009, -1/+9 Reminds me of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", where the elevators are programmed to anticipate where you want to go and show up before you press the "Up/Down" button.
I think they all started brooding and hanging out in the basement after a while. - bxblox, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6Bury me if you want, but this is even a dupe on gizmodo (from december): http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/lazy-library/take+a+sea ... ... Aside from that, it is also not a working prototype. Simply a CGI "wouldn't it be cool" concept.
- esc27, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7First thing I would do, walk down some stairs.
- devmage, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5That video looks like bad stop motion
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Will the robot be able to cope with that one wheel that spins in circles?
- blackmesa, on 06/16/2008, -3/+7Oh... they're novelties now, but you wait till one comes crashing through the wall with a minigun attached to it, it's wheels soaked in human blood... It'll happen, people!
- MattFid, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2True. Getting a shopping cart to follow you is one thing, but getting a shopping cart to avoid objects in it's path is just crazy talk. Next thing you know people will want to event a carriage that doesn't use a horse. Last thing we need are lazy horses.
And from my experience, people suck at navigating shopping carts as it is. I think it's time to give the robots a go. - fongzulu, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2how awesome to have a chair chase you down the boring hallway of the library. you now have a chair buddy!
- vidaliasweet, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2You should. Imma go out and sit on em till they are out of following range.
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2I like how you denigrate the "slobs" while also whining about the chairs being to far away.
I think you redefined the phrase "Stupid and lazy" - inactive, on 06/16/2008, -1/+3The ultimate tool in laziness.
- jgzman, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1I would be reasonably surprised if the Luggage is not the inspiration for this.
- nickert0n, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-xyHjiLY-8&feature ...
- mentor972, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Awww. Don't be upset cause your story is a dupe. I'm sorry someone beat you to it.
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Runaway
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaway_%281984_film% ... - supermanred, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Loser.
- imontoya, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Pleah! I got a wheelchair instead, courtesy of a motorcycle accident :) no RFID needed. I always have a seat in the library, and the best parking at Christmas too.
- diablo2032, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1The future is now!!! we'll all be fatter and lazier haha.... im not sure if im kidding
- jerrykew, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1If this was 20 years ago I would swear it was the inspiration for 'the Luggage' in Terry Pratchett's books.
- elparkino, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Opening scene of Ghostbusters anyone?
When does Grimer start throwing books and sliming everyone?? - crapmatic, on 06/16/2008, -2/+3That's a good idea. I like to read back in the stacks, and in libraries it seems that chairs are always too far away from the stacks and I'm always having to sit on those little metal stools. In bookstores it would be useful too as the regular chairs are all taken up by slobs reading novels for hours like they're in their own living room.
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Now they just need to make it into a toilette and it would be perfect...
- nickert0n, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7se4gFTCys
- jemminger, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1dugg for choice of soundtrack: "Oscar See Through Red Eye" by Boards of Canada
- steelystan, on 06/16/2008, -1/+2Yet another way to get people fatter and lazier. They should call it the Segchair.
- nickert0n, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4axRYJymHI&feature ...
- JibberGeorge, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1It's all fun and games until someone's 2 year old gets run over...
- http://www.thirtyspace.com - amanoj, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1I could use one of these at work! No more looking for an extra chair when brainstorming at a persons cube!
- Mactrekr, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Stupid chair! Get the ***** out of my way! I can see it now, the rise of the library chairs! Millions of innocent humans trip and fall to their death.
- nickert0n, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuBo4E77ZXo&NR=1
- MattInChicago, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Thought the same thing!
- Goombellaofgoom, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1I'd name mine Keester.
- itspuddingtime, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1sudo hide profanity
- spanner, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Activate all the chairs and let your willing minions take over zee library!
Today the Library tomorrow zee world!!!
My army of chair bots will never be conquered!
What if you sat on the first chair and held the card out the front on the end of a stick, it could be your warstead to world domination.... - inactive, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1I could just see shopping carts careening into each other, bouncing off patrons and knocking down displays.
How lazy have we gotten? - polux12dev, on 12/02/2008, -0/+0COOOL!!!
http://4libraries.com/ - mycatsasha, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0Wow, now we can get even LESS exercise and get fatter. Is there a cup holder and a TV tray attached as well?
- CandiLain, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1I think they are adorable. I don't think I would want them in my library tho - too many stupid/fat people
But the scene where they set up in rows looks fake. - mydave, on 08/12/2008, -0/+0haha cool. you can find everywhere your chair.)
http://search.ashtech.info/tech%20news - gkiltz, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0And the purpose, I suppose must be to get handicapped people back into dead tree libraries, and off the internet!
Don't think it'll work!
They seem to be trying to forestall the inevitable! - bxblox, on 06/16/2008, -5/+5Duplicate...
- jamesdew, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1I can see how this would work in a relatively empty bookshop/library but what if you have lots of people in a small space each with a chair following them. Are these chairs aware of eachother? Even if they are they may simply not be able to fit through some gaps, we may end up with chair traffic jams.
- MattInChicago, on 06/16/2008, -2/+1Not real. Where oh where to start...Bad Bad stop motion. Other issues like the chairs in the video coming from a glass wall with no chargers while the video shows them backing into them. There is also no way for independent chairs to "arrange" themselves. There is no floor guides to be seen so the chair can follow and not bump into things. Proximity isn't going to be enough. Lastly, do you want a patron to be able to have multiple chairs following them? Now you could limit that with software but only if the chairs linked to some central system that acts as a arbitrator. In other words, funny video, poorly done, and too many outstanding nuances to be real as is.
