- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Say what you will about BestBuy, I love them.
I bought my current laptop there, got an open box discount of $200.00. I agreed to purchase the item only if they let me inspect it througholy at the store, power it up, etc. It was in flawless condition. Now we are at $1799.00 down from $1999.00. They also honored their own mail in rebate of $100.00 and I mailed in an HP rebate for $200.00. Although my total cost of the laptop was $1499.00, I opened a RewardZone account and they registered the full ($1999.00) price. So with the almost $100.00 worth of certificates I got in the mail, I went back and got a wireless router for free.
If spend over $1000.00 at BestBuy in a single purchase, get RewardZone. If you don't, you are throwing money away.
I cancelled my cell phone insurance many years ago when my provider tried to send me an "equivalent" replacement after charging me a $50.00 deductable. I bought a cell phone from BestBuy in 2003, the salesperson was kind enough to inform me that if I extended my service plan with Sprint, I could get a $150.00 rebate in addition to the instant $50.00 BestBuy rebate. The same salesman also sold me on the PSP (performance service plan). He said if the battery ever died, or I dropped the phone, or I had "problems with dropped calls", BestBuy would replace the phone for free. The salesman kept repeating, now remember if you have "problems with dropped calls", call this number to get a new phone. I nodded my head and remembered the catch phrase to get the new phone. I'm not going to abuse the service plan, but after 1 year my battery was starting to loosen, phone had been dropped a few times, just usual wear and tear. I called the 1-800 number and they said where do you want us to send your new phone. Now they do require you to send your old phone in (understandable), but they also told me to keep my old battery, power cord, etc. They just wanted the phone back. I can't even get Sprint to send me a new phone when mine goes in the river. BestBuy sent me a new phone just for buying the service plan.
Sorry for the long post, but I have nothing but good things to say about BestBuy.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"This is crap, all your doing is getting someone fired for trying to help you out in the first place, even if they do get some sort of commission on monster cable, they are still cutting you a deal on a TV, so it will just end up costing you almost the same as the TV but you get all the monster crap"
Try actually reading the article next time. And they aren't helping you out. Unless you mean they are helping you out of your money. I assume you are young and naive, but the point of coming off the price of the TV is to rip you off on the high margin grossly overpriced accessories. Best Buy will never help anyone out except their own higher-ups/suits. They are a dispicable company.
The only reason I wouldn't want to get a BB manager fired is to keep their sorry asses IN best buy, and that will insure I never have to see them. - kblowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds like more anti-Best Buy garbage, like that retarded digg about the leaked internal memo on how they are obligated to kill you if you don't buy an extended warranty...
(deleted from digg despite getting about 2000 diggs) - blhack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i doubt this will work...My manager freaked on me when i used to work there for even suggesting it...
i asked hime once "so, if somebody's really really close to a huge sale, any way i can move the price on some of the accesories or the actual computer or something to reel 'em in?"
he got pissed.....but he was a total douchebag, about 60-70% of the customers that came in to buy something got pissed at him and didn't want to talk to him after about 5 minutes.
If any of you are from death moines and worked at best buy you know who i am talking about. - yves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This sounds like a great way to ruin package deals for those of us that legitimately purchase items from Best Buy or any other retailer. If you really submit to this kind of behavior, you are a bum. It is also criminals and thieves like you that help drive the prices up in the first place.
If you really want a good deal without demoting your existence to scumbag, there are tons of great deals to be had with a little research. Online, open box items, coupons, rebates. Buy components from whoever has the best price, not all from the same store just because it's convenient.
Best Buy has every right to make a profit, and if you want to put them in their place, do research and buy from someone who simply has a better price. I know this sounds like rocket science to you crooks, but this technique would help drive prices down. Whereas stealing and taking advantage of a business trying to provide a service only drives prices up. - Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys also realize that that's how these guys and girls need make money.Especially with monster cable I know there's a huge mark up on them but not everyone I know can custom cut their own cables and they actually do make a difference compared to the crap patch cables they give you when you buy a DVD player or any other component whether it cost 19.99 or 999.99.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Screw Best Buy, I got a Saumsung 26 inch widescreen HDTV at Target for $130 on clearence!!!!!!! Picture quality is incredible and I payed less then I would have for a standard 21 inch flat screen
- FoneJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting take - but pretty much predictable... and returns at Best Buy can be brutal...
- Windowlicker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To an effect this will work. You may not get the item below cost but definitely a reduced value.
The one flaw I see in this was while I worked at Best Buy we never changed the price of the core product, we always adjusted the accessory price since the margin is, in the long run anyway, based overall. Also if you plan on making this work I don't suggest using sale items, cause they definitely don't like to tough the prices on those.
Good luck at ripping off Best Buy, I assure you whatever deal you get they will still make money off you over time. - cozmyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this will work. i worked at Best Buy for 3 and a half years. Just don't open the stuff. Give them no excuses. Threaten to call corporate and don't listen to any of their lies and this will work
- sacjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How 'bout just go to Costco instead?!
- Gepetto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I don't buy anything from best buy other than Cd's and movies. They actually have quite a selection at the one nearby me, and are a hellova lot cheaper than the other stores around that cell music and movies. I don't have a credit or debit card, but I do have a reward zone card and family friends that use my card while purchasing anything. I loved the day my mom's friend spent something like 2k at best buy and I got 100$ in gift certs randomlly in the mail. It adds up well, it's nice to go buy cds at 6 bucks a pop or movies at that price too.
- Darkmetsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HA! When I worked at bestbuy and saw a poor customer getting ripped off(especially cute girls) I would give them this advice. Managers would go crazy trying to convince customers not to return accessories, funny as hell if you work there.
- FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm no fan of Best Buy, and I'm all for haggling on big ticket items, but this is pretty sketchy with the whole return thing in there. I'd rather pay a couple hundred bucks and keep my dignity.
- kbark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Freakin' sweet digg!
- flak9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it works. i worked as a best buy service tech. it will work 100%. They get serious perks for selling monster and all the other "crap" you need so they can tell you we are not on commission. I have even went back after I quit to another store and did this several times myself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont buy anything at best buy unless it's on a super deep discount or some incredible refund deal. The one time they've tried to screw me o the refund (2 refunds, both required original UPC codes), the manager pulled applied the discount BEFORE I left the store. All it took was pointing out how cut and dried of a fraud case it was. The North Carolina attny general's office (at the time) were a bunch of jackals when it came to this kind of crap against consumers.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I went to Best Buy to buy a usb 2.0 pci card, I laughed when I saw the price at 40 dollars. I went to the Tiger Direct down the street and bought one for 10.
- Dr.House, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great stuff slowspin. I used to work at Best Try, I ***** hated that place. I will never buy anything from them again. I know how this in-boarding works and it happens all the time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So shady activity and indirect theft is now a DIGG?
Sorry guys, I don't care for Best Buy any more than you, but I'm no crook. - slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@the-rip:
No it wasn't - do your research before making a statement like that.
Or maybe you can back up your claim with a link?? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Monster cables are fools gold.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody have any personal experience doing something like this at Best Buy? I'm curious as to whether it will actually work.
IRT Cables:
I'm saving my pennies and will hopelfully be buying a 50 some inch DLP unit in the next few months. Any recommendations about which cables to use and where to get them.
IRT Monster cables:
Yes, they are massively overpriced, but they come with an awesome warranty. I had a hard time getting the s-video cable for my xbox, and ended up with the Monster cable. More than 2 years later it developed some intermittent shorting in the optical out. Called Monster, sent them back, and got them replaced without any questions. So, you do actually get something for your money. - hkpuipui99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Best Buy : Thanksgiving : Period.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks, but no thanks. if i want a deal, i'll go out and look for one, rather than pulling this "social engineering" *****. if you do this, you might be causing someone to lose their job. hey, you're a dickwad!
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so, dereknight and yves, care to explain how this is illegal? am i not allowed to return items i've purchased? especially if they are unopened? it's not like going and buying a dress and wearing it to a wedding and taking it back. they lose nothing. in fact, they still make a profit. and lots of it. and as the article points out, they are making this possible by doing something that they are not supposed to be doing in the first place. sheesh, lighten up and learn to play the game.
- dkovalev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i used to work at best buy 318, vernon hills, now work at the circuit city next to it. same policy at both stores but circuit city is more lenient on price, matters where you go, mosnter has the biggest markup and they make great qulatiy products too. the easiest way to do a return at best buy is do what the author described but return at a different store, and say u lost the reciept.....that way when they print out what you bought they will disregard the tv, because they dont care how much the other best buy gave it to you for, i do reccomend keeping the service but if u use it once outside of the maufactures warranty its void (read the fine print). CC is a bit more hefty for service but u can use it as many times as u want and on larger tvs its in home service, so yea best buy.....SUCKS....best managed company? I THINK NOT!
- doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The only reason I wouldn't want to get a BB manager fired is to keep their sorry asses IN best buy, and that will insure I never have to see them."
Jesus, you can look yourself in the mirror with that kind of attitude? As much as you abhor BestBuy and their sales practices, the manager's kids have to eat too.
Maybe I'm just a naiive fool, but I'd feel pretty guilty about getting some poor schmuck who's just trying to make a living fired so I can get a couple hundred off a TV. - efree58, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when you try to get them to throw in the accessories, get the exact same ones they sell at walmart. walmart takes back everything, receipt or not. you may not get cash back, but a gift card of equivalent amount, but who cares walmart has everything at everyday low prices.(i'm poor and buy stuff at walmart)
- MrCobaltBlue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah only shop at Best Buy if you work there.. and get the sweet ass discount.
Also I heard my manager last night telling one of his sales associates not to suggest Spybot to customers but to suggest our Spysweeper ($30) because Spybot is paid to put spyware on your computer. - faithnomore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The only reason I wouldn't want to get a BB manager fired is to keep their sorry asses IN best buy, and that will insure I never have to see them."
So it now justifies ripping Best Buy of in turn, now all you have achieved is sinking to their level. Like i said, just go somewhere else. And learn to spell (it's despicable)"
^^^
Dude, it's ensure, NOT insure. Here's an axample to illustrate: You should insure your ass coz if I get a hold of you, that would ensure that your hospital bills are paid for.
It just makes my day when idiots like you who can't spell harp on others to spell better. F*cktards. - GMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't you think they read this stuff also and are hip to the scams...?
- kjartan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My folks wanna buy a big-screen HDTV soon--I'll give this a shot.
- ManiacFive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody whose ever worked in an electricl retailer wil tell you you can deal over the price when it comes to warranties.
Also the stores i used to work in, if you bring that back we'd charge you more for the tv, without the accs and the warranty its not a 'package deal' so you dont get the package deal price. - monkey700, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is crap, all your doing is getting someone fired for trying to help you out in the first place, even if they do get some sort of commission on monster cable, they are still cutting you a deal on a TV, so it will just end up costing you almost the same as the TV but you get all the monster crap. Don't rip off Best Buy just buy the TV somewhere else.
- chickenman316, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work at Best Buy, and sorry but this advice is crap. The highest rankings on the scorecards are on Revenue and Margin. Any manager that discounts a product a ton because you bought a bunch of accessories isn't helping out his numbers at all. It used to be different, but they changed the way we get ranked now. It helps prevent stupid stuff like this from happening.
- Seamus_MacAmus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Life's way too short for this sort of tactic. It may work, but only by having a confrontation with an underpaid sales clerk. I'll pass.
- PonchoHobono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use to work at BB also and this did use to be the case. But like others have said, it doesn't work as well any more.
My little tip, if you buy a DVD writer, always buy the two year replacement plan. When that two years is almost up (or a newer one is out that you want) take it back and say it doesn't work. They have never actually check it when I have done this. They just say to go grab the one you want. You'll get the full credit from your original purchase price towards a newer (& better) DVD writer. Usually the new one is cheaper than what you paid for the older one. Use that money to buy, you guessed it, another replacement plan. I've done this twice. - AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Please disregard my last comments, I forgot about the part of taking back the accessories, then I just glanced over the article again and saw that part. Sorry.
- monkey700, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"try actually reading the article next time. And they aren't helping you out. Unless you mean they are helping you out of your money. And learn to spell (it's despicable) - AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Please someone correct me if I am wrong, because I am assuming they aren't going to take ~500$ or more off a TV to make this a deal.
- the-rip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this is a repeat... this was on digg like 3 days ago
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0So after you spend 200 - 400 on a surge protector then "a couple hundred" on cables and then a service plan. How much are they going to take off the TV? I'm assuming this is something you should just do if you were planning on buying those accessories anyway because I don't see them taking enough off a TV to make it worth it if you weren't going to buy these accessories. Sure you can get a deal on a TV, but the money you spend on accessories makes up what you saved on the TV. So they are making a killing off you for the surge protector, the cables and service plan, and then lowering their profit a little on the TV, most likely STILL making a profit with little or no benefit to you if you weren't buying the accessories anyway.
