- colincornaby, on 05/01/2008, -11/+43Eh, the computer benches with pretty average scores, the fan runs full blast all the time, and the ethernet card drops it's connection every 15 minutes.
Sounds like a pretty crappy computer to me. I feel sorry for people who ordered one. - inactive, on 05/01/2008, -10/+31No Firewire.
No memory configurations available.
No built in audio configurations available.
And the jet fan.
Sounds like a piece of fail to me. - Burn, on 05/01/2008, -8/+25I use exactly the same hardware for my Hackintosh at home:
- Gigabyte GA-P31-S2L
- Intel Core2Duo E4500 2.2GHz
- 2GB RAM
- Nvidia GeForce 8600GT
- Etc...
My Hackintosh runs absolutely flawlessly, including the Apple Remote (I use an MCE Receiver and Remote Buddy), and I definitely have no 'roaring fans' issue, you hear the fans when the system is under load speed up a tiny bit but usually they are close to silent.
To be honest, my experience with the OSX86 project on two desktop PCs and one Dell laptop have convinced me that I wont bother buying Apple hardware again once I feel the need to upgrade my MacBook Pro. - geoken, on 05/01/2008, -8/+23Yeah, what idiots. The should have just spent a few hundred dollars more since there is no solution to the loud fan problem.
If only some enterprising individual decided to start selling quite, aftermarket computer fans everything would be great. Alas, this will probably never happen. - waterdrop, on 05/01/2008, -6/+19Just build your own Hackintosh, it would be cheaper. If you need help, check out the InsanelyMac forums.
- aliguana, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8I ran a hackintosh for nearly a year, and never once did the network "drop out". These guys need to be installing a more compatible ethernet board methinks
- PueSi, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7Couldn't you set the BIOS to auto regulate fan speed?
- ethanpack, on 05/01/2008, -2/+8So you're saying that the P.O.C. is really a P.O.S.?
- Qumahlin, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5Are you a moron trying to compare a X360 to a PC? Did you honestly expect the xbox 360 to have firewire or built in audio configurations? It's a game console, not a computer, nor has it ever been marketed as a computer.
Did you compare your nintendo and Sega Genesis to your computer as well and bitch about them not having USB? - MacParrot, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5Everyone needs to calm down. These are the first units out and while I'm a bit surprised the Psystar didn't go the extra distance to make sure everything was perfect for a review unit, I'm not surprised that they just wanted to get one out. With all the accusations of them being frauds or hoaxers, just getting one out the door was important. Hopefully future machines will be of a better build and they will fix the problems as they exist now.
I'm as big a Mac fan as anyone (shocker yes I know), but I would buy one IF it worked properly, was reasonably quiet, and could be upgraded or patched to newer versions of OS X. I had two clones in the late 90s (A Umax 603 tower and an APS 604 tower) and they were great. The cloners started using standard PC hardware (like ATA drive controllers as compared to SCSI that Apple used exclusively) with Apple/Motorola designed motherboards to keep the costs down and they weren't afraid to use new hardware that Apple wouldn't use until it was tested to death in their labs.
What killed them was that they didn't expand the Mac market-share as was originally intended. They just marketed to existing Mac owners cutting into Apple's business. When Jobs came back the first thing he did was take the existing System 7.7 work and rename it to System 8 which none of the cloners had licenses for. This effectively killed the clones. I was pretty pissed off when it happened originally since I was a clone owner and this meant that Apple had just "end-of-lifed" my systems. In retrospect, it actually was a good business decision and Apple has flourished since.
However, maybe it's time that Apple took another look at licensing the Mac OS. It would be a big risk since their market-share still isn't where it would need to be for OS X licensing to make up for the loss of sales of low-end Macs. They essentially would have to stop making the minis and the iMacs. It could be do-able AND they could offer software support for these machines IF they still limited the types of hardware known to work well with OS X and other Apple-branded software. Design two to five motherboards and put them out for whoever wanted to make a Mac compatible. Keep the high end Mac Pros, servers, and laptop lines for themselves as they are very profitable and might make up some of the loss from the low/mid-range machines. Hey, I can dream. - Vektuz, on 05/01/2008, -2/+7HAha. When he was creating his user there were sirens in the background and I imagined it was the apple police coming for him
- PueSi, on 05/01/2008, -4/+8You don't need to patch OS X, it's made by Steve Jobs, it's perfect.
- herrshuster, on 05/01/2008, -1/+4no one would have, believe me
- colincornaby, on 05/01/2008, -4/+7The problem isn't the hardware, it's the software. OS X doesn't have drivers for that motherboards fan controller, and Psy-fly-by-night-star couldn't be bothered with writing any.
Not that them including the stock fans helps any. - geoken, on 05/01/2008, -4/+7After reading some of those comments I had to go to NewEgg and make sure the price of a silent fan didn't somehow jump to $420. Last I checked you could silence pretty much any PC for about $50 in parts.
- Qumahlin, on 05/01/2008, -1/+4"Operating system stability is largely determined by the software you choose to run and your care of the hardware itself. If you blow the dust out, are careful about static, keep the computer vibration free, low humidity, keep it on a voltage controlled UPS, and install only proven software......any operating system will provide a solid platform"
Providing that operating system is not Windows Vista and providing you never update your drivers after your initial windows install, then yes you would be correct. I have a laptop with a fresh copy of Windows XP SP2. The laptop will randomly throw BSOD's while doing nothing more then browsing in explorer. The laptop has only ever had WHQL approved drivers installed. The only software installed on the laptop other then what comes with Windows is the game Fallout 2.
So are you claiming that my issue is not with drivers and the OS, but rather that the laptop is dirty, or that Fallout 2 is somehow causing these errors? The driver issues and hand picked hardware are not overstated. They ensure consistency and they ensure that all software developers know EXACTLY what hardware they will be developing for.
Your argument might as well be "If you buy a computer, and never install any software, drivers, games, or upgrades, then your computer will never crash" Next you'll enlighten us that it can't crash if you don't turn it on - sstidman, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Why not just manually enter the IP address? It is bizarre that the DHCP lease keeps dropping, but it's not the worst problem the system could have.
- dpcamp, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3yup vanilla kernal = flawless updates.
- amoore260, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3sorry bad link http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/4725/newegggm2. ...
- championchap, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Hand crafted by Steve himself!
- amoore260, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3It's not really a bad deal in terms of hardware. Check out these prices at new egg.
- Gigabyte GA-P31-S2L = $64.99
- Intel Core2Duo E4500 2.2GHz =$119.99
- 2GB RAM = $89.99
- Nvidia GeForce 8600GT = $89.99
http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/4725/newegggm2. ... - tnoy, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2When I ran a hackintosh for a few months, I had zero problems with the network adaptor and the DHCP problem thats been talked about.
- dpcamp, on 05/01/2008, -1/+3am i the only one that thought "well no *****" when they were comparing a 2.2 ghz core 2 duo pc to a 3.06ghz core 2 duo iMac and the iMac won?? The only computer compareable to it was the 2.2 ghz Macbook, and it was a little faster than it.
Anyone who owns and knows how to get OS X working RIGHT on a PC, knows they blows the Macs out of the water. - PhillyMJS, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2"What killed them was that they didn't expand the Mac market-share as was originally intended. They just marketed to existing Mac owners cutting into Apple's business."
Yes, and the implicit agreement was that the cloners would take the low end of the market that Apple did not (and still does not) want, and leave the high end for Apple. But it didn't work out that way-- the cloners pumped out machines that directly competed with Apple's offerings, and I know for at least a time in the late 90s, the fastest Mac you could buy came from Power Computing, not Apple.
It was kind of shady renaming 7.7 to 8.0 to screw the cloners, but it was totally necessary because they were bleeding Apple dry. - griz, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2This is a win for Apple. It just goes to show that no matter how hard you try to clone a mac, you just can do it as well as Apple. I'm sure the reason why Apple is not touching this is because they know of the negative press it will lead to. Leaving it alone and watching Psystar flail in the shadow of Apple's quality will only give them an edge in the long run. Aside from upgradability, these systems are no cheaper than buying a Mac Mini. If you add on all the options to bring their low end system to be equal to a mini, you are at the same price. Remember, no Wifi, Bluetooth, iLife, Not to mention no OS support from Apple or ability to upgrade the OS upon future revisions. This is a play toy at best for people who want to hack. It will not be a threat to Apple in its current form.
- ism70605, on 05/01/2008, -2/+4I got a Macbook, because I wanted Unix on the go with decent battery life. Does that make me of Paris Hilton intelligence?
- uberamd, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Does anyone care about Psystar still? I sure as hell don't, this is an old concept and its a company trying to take advantage of the work OSx86 did.
- colincornaby, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2The issue is really cost effectiveness. For $400 more, you could get a fully supported iMac, with a built in LCD and faster components. No, it won't be expandable as much, but for most consumers, it's a far better choice.
- Tenoq, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2Yes you can. The Gigabyte board they use certainly supports that. It's possible though that the fan noise is not CPU - it's a crap PSU or something similar.
- tnoy, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Firewire cards can be bought for under $15 now.
Besides, Firewire for storage is going to be next to useless once eSATA gets more market saturation. I've replaced all my external drives with eSATA ones already. - bilbohicks, on 05/01/2008, -1/+3If it's the vanilla kernel - which I use on my own hackintosh, then yes you can :)
- unionaire, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1as long as the system cannot use software update function, i don't think steve jobs will be concerned.
- aliguana, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1for $400 more, you could buy another Hackintosh.
- skeletorcares, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Whatcha gonna do? You can put a suit on a monkey, but its still a monkey. That suit won't stop him from playing with his *****.
Put a different case on OSX, its still OSX. And its still a POS. - Xzn31, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1mmmkay fanboy.
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Who would? For less about $100 extra you could get a PROPER mac mini with firewire, bluetooth, ilife. This is *****.
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1quiet
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1This just proves that its a piece of ***** and you;d be better off with a mac mini.
- tnoy, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1You can have fans set to speed up or slow down based on the temperature of the device. Any decent motherboard will have BIOS-controlled fans, and any decent power supply will control the fan speed based on internal temperature.
Using proper hardware eliminates the need for software controlled fans. Should I draw you a picture? Its a simple concept. - inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Already been established that you can't.
- Juaquin, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1If the fans really bother you, get a fan controller. $15, problem solved. Otherwise, you could build that same computer for a little less, but then again they do shoehorn OSX into there for you, so it's a toss up.
- bradleyland, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1It's stupid to expect my fan to run only at the speed required to cool the computer for the current load?
- bradleyland, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I don't know why you're being dugg down. Apparently, everyone in this thread can figure out how to buy a quiet fan, except Psystar... yet they remain the maven of the OSx86 market.
- scooterbaga, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1His logic is clearly flawless... How can anyone possibly argue with the statement above?
- griz, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I feel sorry for the general consumer who thinks they can buy one of these as a cheap mac alternative. Once the first support call comes in to Apple and they learn that Leopard is running on a Psystar machine, Steve's blood will start to boil. As long as Apple doesn't get hit by support calls, Apple will stay away from this for fear of negative press.
- chad78, on 05/01/2008, -1/+2To get more thumbs up - you need to spell out what POC stands for - cuz apparently most diggers don't get it. NVM - I'll do it for you - Psystar Open Computer.
- bjs3171, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1can you duel boot windows on these, or a hackintosh? i need wiindows for Solidworks. And games, and I'm not spending 3000 dollars for a MacPro tower.
- PeachCobbler, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I installed OSx86 on my computer sunday. Leopard purrs on it. It shares 2 hard drives with 5 other OSes. :D
[DreamLinux 3.0, OpenSuse 10.3, PC Linux OS 2007, Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit, and WinXP Home SP2) - griz, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I'm guessing they wanted to have the iMacs in there to show HD performance. You can't put the MB or MBP against the OC's HD since it is a 3.5 vs a 2.5 inch drive. The 3.5 will win hands down.
- tnoy, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Most all external harddrives dont use the power from firewire anyways. That, and few firewire ports provide the full 1.5A capability.
