- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I was thinking of starting an online tagging service called 'AnAlDouche' - this is a great name, no? It's all about taking the 'ouch' out of analysis!

- dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I realize the spelling is not the same, but I read the title in my head as "A condom that can organize my online data??". Someone in marketing goofed. No thanks.
- sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're very good at it, BTW.
As for APIs vs. RSS, you're right. Most of the sites we're dealing with use RSS. However, it's really what you do with the RSS data that counts, right? If we were just pulling a bunch of feeds in and displaying them, then I would agree that we weren't doing anything very interesting.
Fortunately, RSS and our mashup are just one of the 3 or 4 features that we are launching with (we'll have a couple more features out 30-60 days after launch that have very little to do with RSS either).
And it is worth mentioning that you can add *any* site to your Profilactic profile. As long as you can provide a URL, we can do something with it. Of course, RSS or an API would allow us to do more.
Once you see it, I think you'll see that the focus really isn't only on RSS. - sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5We have no marketing... other than this Digg thread :) There are only 4 of us (and three of us are engineers), so marketing isn't our focus.
I wanted something that would play off of the word "profile" that people would remember. I am totally biased; however, I think we accomplished that. - rephlektiv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4selective quoting is one of my original talents --
unless you have access to numerous amounts of api's allowing bidirectional interfacing.. you're still stuck with what you're pushing: passive rss.
out of these 17 social sites you use, how many offer anything other than rss? i'll start the list: flickr..
your turn. - wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The name of the service is basically a perfect setup for the next 100 comments about condoms and meeting people online.
- codyfrisch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess if you're going to get close to all those girls on MySpace etc. you might need a prophylactic...
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"marketing isn't our focus" = large mistake.
I get the feeling that most people won't pronounce the name as profile-actic but more as profal-actic. - rsbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This looks very cool - I can't wait for the beta!
- ocellnuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I started building something like this for myself over the summer. I got distracted and never got it completely put together. Looks like now I don't have to finish it. This looks like it will be a great way to tie all of your different online existences together into one identity.

Good point! I keep forgetting that people can make things they enjoy without the explicit purpose of money making. Damn web 2.0
Just for your reply, i've forwarded the link on to a bunch of social network junkies. I'm sure they would thank you :) - U8IK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The ideea is nice but http://www.suprglu.com has been providing this service since long ago - aggregating various RSS sources. Is there any significant difference with Profilactic?
- h0zae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am working on the same thing for all of my different Credit Cards - GREAT IDEA
- sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am familiar with Suprglu. I think they have a great service; however it is a lot different from Profilactic. Profilactic has what Suprglu has (a mashup of various RSS-based sites and services); however, we are folding in the social aspect (and other goodies) that will make this a totally different experience.
I have always felt that Suprglu is trying to be a blog replacement service. Profilactic is trying to be a complement to any site or service that you (and your friends) are already using. - sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dpknc84
I wasn't trying to gloat. I was just trying to be funny. Maybe I should try gloating since I seem to be better at that than being funny. - sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2meatmcguffin:
If this were a business, I would agree with you. However, this isn't a business. We are just building a site that we want to use. If other people use it and like it, then that is great.
And we're not *too* terrible at marketing considering we were featured in an article that made the Digg home page and has given us over 100 beta sign-ups in the past couple of hours. - everlaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that's a cool idea
- rephlektiv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@smorty71
"At this point, I wasn't sure if I had a kickass idea that no one had thought of yet or just a lame idea that no one thought was worth building." -- that was the only informative piece of writing in your site blog.. it shows some sincere honesty towards the end of the thought.
Your google search for a similar site didn't yield any results because they aren't called "myspace/flickr/digg/delicious all in one supercool-neato readers!", they're called rss readers.
The prelaunch page speaks of no functionality beyond rss aggregation - until you mention these brilliant ideas you have stashed away which are oh so exciting.. great! i am all ears.. until then, it's _still_ unoriginal. - rephlektiv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You: "I'm not worried about being original"
Your blog: "After sketching out a few rough pages and convincing myself that I had a pretty decent idea, I decided to see if anyone else had thought of it. I did a couple of Google searches and found sites that were doing things that were *almost* like what I was thinking... ...I had a kickass idea that no one had thought of yet ..." ... dot dot dot ...
recap: "I'm not worried about being original." - sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks, meat!
- sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nice selective quoting. Here is what I said jokingly:
"At this point, I wasn't sure if I had a kickass idea that no one had thought of yet or just a lame idea that no one thought was worth building. Being pretty full of myself, I chose the former."
The goal of this project is not to be original, it is to provide something useful. If you don't find it useful (or original), you won't hurt our feelings. Like I said, I tend to be pretty full of myself. - rephlektiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can see how easy it is to be mislead down the RSS assumption when you read the paragraph on your pre-launch page..
if you're looking to make a mark may i highly recommend you focus on those unique abilities you're hiding.. and not the typical ones we all already have.. some people go after cute names or the appeal of convenience.. i'm a sucker for proven functionality. - sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Considering that you haven't tried it, I'm not sure who you can know enough about it to be so critical.
And to be clear, we're not hopping on any bandwagon. We are building this service because we have a need for it. I have about 15 profiles and it is hard to keep up with them. It is also difficult for me to keep up with the profiles and content of my friends. If I solve that problem for myself, then the site is a success. If other people like it, too, then that's even better.
We've got more tricks up our sleeves than simple RSS aggregation. I find your lack of faith disturbing. - dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't gloat too much. You could have titled it, hott digg porn and probably achieved the same thing knowing some of the diggers around here.
- MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Not really something I need, but dugg because a few guys are trying to carve out their little niche on the 'net and have the balls to hang out here in the comments to respond to the inevitable a-holes. Good luck!
- tedesco455, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Great Idea
- rephlektiv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2this defeats the purpose of the websites it supposedly supports.. the idea of a social networking site is to use the features within the site to interact with other users. as lovely as an "all in one" mashup may be, this is far from a new concept when we've had web based rss aggregation for years.
dugg down for lack of originality and last minute hopping on the web2.0/mashup bandwagon. - Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes! No I can tie in a bunch of sexual predators when I check my facebook!
- disillusioned, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've had this idea for a few months now, but mine implementation is definitely a bit different. Feedburner's talked about building something similar for some time.
A bunch of these will kick up in the near future now. - sink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I for one am very interested to see where Profilactic goes. Go for it sMoRTy71. Ignore the detractors.
- disillusioned, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This already exists... http://www.yodlee.com offers account aggregation services.
- sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm not worried about being original. I'm trying to make some useful for people who are juggling a bunch of online profiles *and* have a bunch of friends who are doing the same thing.
I encourage you to sign up for the beta, so you can check it out. It is definitely not an RSS reader. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yes, what a brilliant idea - A social networking site for all your other social networking sites.
No, really, that is clever, albeit in the most obnoxious ways. - sMoRTy71, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Thanks, MoneyShot. They're taking it pretty easy on us so far.
