- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39I could simplify this map even more - just write in big letters "SUCKERS" over the entire map of the US, it would sum up our situation a little better.
- eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Last time I checked (a few months ago) gas prices were approximately $7 per gallon in Europe. As bas as gas prices in America are, they are nothing compared to the prices in many other parts of the world.
- verucasalt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26"acrossed"?
*slaps forehead*. What are you, 8? I fear for the future. - BSpolice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Look! California is a red state!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Submitter's grammar makes me nauseous. No wonder there are fewer and fewer American scientists and engineers; Americans can't read or write.
- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Doesn't stop the fact that gas is overpriced, no matter where it's sold.
We're just buying Saudi princes more Ferrari's, those people live like kings while everyone else struggles to make ends meet having to pay excess prices for oil & gas. The US obsession with the SUV (haha, suckers.) makes our problem even worse. I'm so glad I have my little 4 cylinder Toyota, I laugh when I pull up to the pump and see some ***** laying down $100 to fill up his Ford Explorer.
It's a ***** racket, no matter where it's sold. Just because Europe pays 2-3x as much doesn't make it right. - jmnormand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11A lot of the price variations have more to do with state and local taxes than the actually cost of gas in these areas. Hawaii and maybe a few others would obviously have exceptions to this.
- Ruckus21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'm driving to Wyoming to get me some $2.37 gas. Geez, that's like when Kramer and Newman took the empty bottles back to Michigan to get the extra nickel from the deposit. (Seinfeld)
- modian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15It never acrossed my mind that there would be such a variance in the price thoughout the lands of the USA.
- antron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Canadians don't use gas. Doncha know?
They drive vehicles powered by their smug
sense of self-satisfaction. - Handcannons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8************
It's well over $4 US per gallon in most places in Canada. It's funny to see people complain about their gas prices when ours are almost double some places
***********
Your tax's account for most of the difference. People always say "look at how much Europe pays, you're lucky". 75% of the price of a gallon of gas there is taxes. It's not as bad in Canada but still a lot worse than in the US.
Thank your elected officials for the high price of gas. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I'm glad nobody is blaming the oil companies. It would be like shooting the messenger. Nothing like watching economics at work, limited supply, unlimited wants. This will be fun to watch as this unfolds during the next several months. You may want to start stockpiling your podcasts on your iPod, as we will all be wating in fuel lines in the near future. Welcome to our new reality."
If by "shooting the messanger" you mean "shooting the bastards who rack in their record profits for another year in a row" then yes, that's exactly it. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9In Montreal we're paying $3.70 US per gallon. And the funny thing is, Canada has the second biggest oil reserves in the WORLD after Saudi Arabia. Canada is also the US's biggest oil supplier. And despite sitting on more oil than anybody but the saudis, we've got such insane oil prices.
- rocjoe71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7..."Hello, Supply?"
"Yes?"
"This is Demand, would you spend 5 minutes and explain to 'Shuffles' what we're all about? While you're at it, send him a geography lesson and circle the states that are at the bottom of the list for people-per-square-mile." - verucasalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This isn't a typo or spelling mistake. This is some person who apparently thinks that "acrossed" is a word. There is a big difference. Who would actually sit at a keyboard and type the word "acrossed"? It's scary.
- XxN3RDC0R3xX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Us in California are F'ed in the A.
- uberphildo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Whoa, yes! GAS prices! What about GAs prices? Or for those that use gAS?
And the rare few of us that fill our cars with gas?
Oh, and it's a good thing they have a MAP of this. Though I was actually hoping for more of a mAp. - argoff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Notice how there are very sharp distinctions right on most state boundaries. That is because higher gas prices are caused more by bad government than by expensive oil. And in fact, oil is not that much more expensive when you compare it to the amount of money the fed has been loaning into the economy. I've herd the "peak oil" argument that says we're running out of oil in the world, and it's probably true, but for now the main thing driving up oil prices is not oil getting more expensive, but US dollars having their value watered down by bad policy. Notice how gold has been going up even faster than oil lately.
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66-7$ the gallon in Iceland.
The worst thing is, that it will NEVER go down, never...
Let's switch to hydro - intilli4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Dude I always use gasbuddy when gas gets to be outragous. It has saved me a small fortune.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5oh the horror..
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5cali looks like a big inflamed zit on the map..
- Personatech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8He didn't say anything about taxation - he's talking about bad fiscal policy on a national scale.
Now, since you brought up taxation, let's talk about it a bit. I live in North Carolina where the gasoline tax RATE is re-indexed every six months on average wholesale gasoline pricing. This means that after supplies were restricted by Katrina, our gasoline tax skyrocketed due to both the increased price at the pump AND the higher gasoline tax rate per gallon. Our tax is now the third highest in the USA at just under .30 per gallon (with Federal tax, that comes to a whopping $.48 per gallon!) Why so high, you ask? Primarily because NC does NOT want to tax tobacco to the extent other states do. This means drivers in NC are subsidizing smoking which is a damned fool thing to do. To make matters more insulting, NC expects to have a $1 billion SURPLUS this coming fiscal year and that will be just as immoral a windfall profit as those that the oil companies will enjoy.
Okay, enough of the rant. Since NC has the highest gasoline tax BY FAR than surrounding states, why does it show on this map as being in the same price range as SC, GA, TN, and VA? I KNOW VA prices are much lower (I live within 15 miles of that state line) and the last time I was in GA the prices were even lower than VA. The map doesn't seem to jive with the facts. - jonish, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11It's worse in Hawaii (where I am) than Cali. It's at least $3.50 a gallon for the regular. (and more for the premium blends)
EDIT- Sorry meant to reply to comment below. - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5True that most people are glad they don't live in California...
But, usually the pay is higher because of the high cost of living, and usually if anyone wants a good tech job, they have to go to CA. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Easy. They realise people in highly populated states are willing to pay more. So they raise the price. That is the SOLE reason, not because of a shortage and not because their switching to "summer gas"
- thecoolestcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Is that the only error you noticed? What about capitalizing "GAS" and "MAP"? I didn't know that it was an acronym. How about the new word "ver?"
Please, spell check what you wrote. If English is not your first language, get someone else to check it. - deboosher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5is there a Canadian version of this?
- jpwhitmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not only taxes but different states have different laws on what formulations of gas are allowed. California has very strict requirements on the kinds of gas that are sold so the prices are higher.
- zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oil cartels must have worn out their beds of made of gold and padded with money. How selfish of us to complain about gas prices when they can't get a good night's sleep. Only fresh $100 bills are cushy enough to sleep on.. don't even try to suggest sleeping on new $1 bills or used $1 bills.
- EasY_TargeT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4^^^^ lucky you, in toronto i just paid 4.08 per gal
- whitehatlurker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Note re US/Canada comparisons.
$4.00 (USD) per US gallon is about $1.20 (CAD) per litre. If you're not in Atlantic Canada, you're likely not paying what the Americans are when they say $4.00/gallon. Remember that they use smaller gallon (and quart and pint) measures.
1 litre = 0.220 Imperial Gallons = 0.264 US Gallons
1 Canadian dollar = 0.87858 U.S. dollars (Google) - motbob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Interestingly, I have found that one's ability to write proper grammer is completly unrelated to the engineering prowess of that person. For example, I am at the head of my class in AP Physics yet I just now omitted a comma after the word "Physics," thus creating a run-on sentence.
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3motbob, when critiquing your own gammar, you might want to mention that you also spelled "grammar" incorrectly. :-)
- djblast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thank god i don't live in California....
MD for the win...kind of - mnrosebud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And I thought prices in MN were high! Now I realize we are in the lower end of it. Interesting and SCARY!
- totalcheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was just in Salt Lake for easter. Had I realized gas was 3.13 back home, I would have picked some up...
- dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3....Switch to summer gas......
Um......we dont exactly have winter here in SoCal so WTF..... - zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With my luck in the stock market I should invest all my money in oil. That would be the point it would tumble down to $10 a barrel or something...
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's well over $4 US per gallon in most places in Canada. It's funny to see people complain about their gas prices when ours are almost double some places. And yes I know how to do conversions. I wonder if everyone surrounding Elko NV drives there just for the cheaper gas price...It would be really close for some people.
- tonage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4future15tbd's line of thought:
AH, the word GAS in a digg. Let me hurry in there to spread my bias propaganda against Bush. I don't need to read or understand the story in any way. I don't need to even begin to understand the many causes of gas prices going up. Just let me get my cheap shot in. GAS=BUSH. GAS=BUSH. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's because gas sold in California has additives that are unique to California. You can thank all the enviro-whackos for that. They're also the reason MTBE is polluting the water. One thing I hated about living in CA was that so many laws were passed based on emotions rather than facts, and there were so many damned laws.
- cynapz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thanks to the Katrina excuse for inflating oil prices last year and then Exxon posts record profits!... Just how rich do they need to be!? I am astounded at the amount of greed that exists in the oil industry, just when I think it can't be any worse... There is absolutely no justification for the current price hike... People are gong to get annoyed and something will break...
- crumbtrail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With grammar errors like this, gas prices are the least of our problems. Can't headings be run through a grammar check?
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it has nothing to do with octane, their octane is rated a bit differently but is essentially the same.
- Nothlit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We have no one to blame but ourselves for this. Gas-guzzling SUV's and all the enviro-whackos pushing for special blends and strict regulations on refineries. Even if we wanted to start building new refineries today, it would take years just to finish all the paperwork, let alone the actual construction!
- adamlaz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The prices on this map are not right. When is the last time they were updated?
Looking around most places it is low by about 20 cents. CT, FL, CA, CO - (Places I know the actualy prices) - darookee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You pay around 6 USD per gallon in Germany (if i counted right...)
1 Liter ~ 1.30€
1€ = 1.23 USD
1 Gallon ~ 3.7 Liter
3.7 Liter * 1.30€ = 4.81€/Liter * 1,23 = 5.90USD - koekoek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2in Belgium we pay like 1.3 euros / liter ( 6 $/G) for regular
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3please can we pay a little more, the rich are having a bad time of it, and we all need to help them out!
