- KirbyMeister, on 10/31/2007, -10/+641. Promise $100 laptop
2. Realize production costs push up the price to $200
3. ???
4. Non-profit! - theblackgecko, on 10/31/2007, -6/+49With the exchange rate, that means it'll cost most foreign governments $50.
- thosemoose, on 04/17/2008, -2/+24Why are people getting so riled up about this. It's not their fault component prices have gone up. It's reasonable to say that they are not aiming for profits in this case.
- johndi, on 10/30/2007, -5/+27So that's why the price keeps going up. He's trying to reach $100 and is racing against a falling dollar.
- dyvbond, on 10/31/2007, -0/+15Whole article on one page- http://www.reuters.com/articlePrint?articleId=USN2 ...
- WorkingDead, on 10/31/2007, -1/+15Honestly, OLPC is an extremely important project. The wireless mesh networking capacity alone could put and end to censorship in developing countries. Free flow of information leads to education which allows people to hoist themselves out of poverty. The fact that MS is trying to get XP preinstalled on it should be a significant warning flag to the impact this project can have. This is much larger than a nifty gadget.
- wandywalsh, on 10/31/2007, -3/+14Is it made by children in the Chinese factory?
- webjoseph, on 10/30/2007, -1/+11It has game buttons? Great, we will have all these kids from 3rd world nations trying to pwn me on Counterstrike and talking smack...
- tboutcher, on 10/30/2007, -2/+11Still buying one. My work (k-12 school district) is picking up 2. Seeing if they could be used in the classroom
- vvaduva, on 10/31/2007, -4/+12The Walmart plan is better:
1. Promise low prices
2. Use volume buying to get suppliers' prices down
3. Sell full-fledged laptops for $398
4. Profit AND benefit people who can't afford $2,000 laptops
5. Everyone wins! - rebotfc, on 10/30/2007, -0/+8Don't worry all you will get is:
"???? ??? ???????? ?????? ????? AWP ???? ???? LAME" - HansErik, on 10/31/2007, -3/+10"You need to go to work, Xing Tao, so that other little children around the world can play on a laptop..."
- thomasprebble, on 10/30/2007, -0/+6Microsoft can offer it until the cows come home but there is no chance in hell it will ever ship with it. One of the core principles of the OLPC initiative is that it is to be based on FOSS, of which XP is clearly not.
- tekrat, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5Microsoft originally offered to donate XP to the project. However there was a sunset clause on how long it would be free to the project and it would need to be crippled version of Windows. I think it was going to be the two programs at a time rule like the micro version they offered in Asia.
- peaceninja, on 10/30/2007, -2/+7why is microsoft trying to get xp on the olpc? is that an implicit acknowledgment that vista is bloated?
- jf518, on 10/30/2007, -1/+6it is still a very cheap option for those unable to afford a typical computer, so give the man some credit.
- Phocion55, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5There's a window of time where you can buy 2.
http://www.laptopgiving.org/ - londubh, on 10/30/2007, -2/+7no make it the 100 GPB laptop
- sU2lly, on 10/31/2007, -3/+7Someone needs to ask the writer of that article what he's done for the poor kids around the world. This guy must swing by Habitat for Humanity houses to make fun of the craftsmanship.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 11/08/2007, -1/+5It runs cough cough LINUX. This isn't news, it's been close to 200 bucks for at least 6 months now. The laptops are cool looking, like little alien toys. You can buy one, but the only catch is, you have to also buy a second one and donate it to the project. www.xogiving.org is the site I think.
- brickbat, on 10/31/2007, -8/+11make it the 100 EUR laptop
- Difranco1911, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3I was just going to say something similar. The cost of the laptop hasn't gone up, its just the value of the dollar is plummeting.... http://quotes.ino.com/chart/?s=NYBOT_DX Thank you Federal Reserve!!!
- thomasprebble, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Microsoft did offer the to preload all laptops with XP free of charge but the initiative rejected that offer. I don't see Microsoft participating unless they are doing so in an open source capacity.
- RichLatherX23, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3This is the first time I've seen a photograph of it that gave me some sense of scale (i.e. next to a person). Man, that thing is tiny. It almost looks like the fake-y laptops you'd buy at a department store's toy section.
- scabbers, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4I suppose one way of looking at it is that one useful laptop between 2 kids is better than a ***** one each. I suppose.
- mRIpX, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3wasn't it originally around $150 or so to begin with, nothing really new being reported
- sstidman, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3In all the many years that I have been buying computer parts, the prices have continuously fallen. I don't know why you would think that the prices have gone up. Their goal was simply too ambitiious and unrealistic. I think it's amazing that they got the price down to $200. That's still insanely cheap. In a few years, they will be able to sell the same laptop for $100.
- kazukisan, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3i think the cpu speed is 433mhz
- vvaduva, on 10/31/2007, -4/+7How about helping them build coal burning electric plants so they wouldn't have to burn manure for heating and cooking?
Or encourage free enterprise and capitalism to promote responsible economic policies?
I am with you - those laptops should only come in one color. Soviet red. Much more descriptive and accurate. - flux1, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4Its $200 for one, so you end up paying $400 now if you buy one from a "privileged" country. You are better off getting an Asus EEE or some cheap black friday deal than paying for one of these now.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4At this rate you can make it the $100CAD laptop... in a couple of months it'll be worth about $200USD *cry*
- vvaduva, on 10/30/2007, -2/+5As usual, attack Bill Gates for the failure of a project he had nothing to do with...what a ridiculous and ignorant post!!
- callsignVIPER17, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3well, unfortunately for a lot of developing countries, the actual end user will not be able to afford a $100 computer, let alone a $200 one. So, like some people previously mentioned, we should teach people how to read, etc before we try and sell them a laptop.
- ubergeek09, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3This project is really going downhill, it's twice it's original cost now! I doubt this is going to work out if they keep bumping up the price, it's really quite unfortunate.
- ubergeek09, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2I really wouldn't be talking about morons, just look at your atrocious spelling.
- jcaino, on 10/30/2007, -1/+3it's already started wendel.
- cin0s3, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3I thought the premise of the $100 laptop was to sell it for $200 and everytime one was bought another would be donated somewhere?
- Dested, on 10/30/2007, -3/+5Why isnt this submitted? If youre a top digger and reading this, find printer friendly and no matter what it is, i'll digg it.
- Phocion55, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3Make that complaint to a clothing retailer. Not a computer system inventor.
- doskir, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2thats because its designed for children not adults
- lost.sync, on 10/31/2007, -2/+4it's pretty sickening watching lots of you be ***** about people trying to do a good thing.
- bjs3171, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2200 for a laptop that actually has some tech innovations in it (color to black/white monitor), is pretty damn good. give the man some credit where it's due. and i'm sure the price will be able to come down within 6 months just like every other piece of technology.
- mstoneburner, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2I can't wait to buy one of these off of Ebay.
- mstoneburner, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2I'm going to buy one just to stick it to the third world.
- bethebryant, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3Yea, because there aren't any organizations that distribute food to 3rd world countries. Let's just keep sending them food through Sally Struthers, heaven forbid we give them technology so that they can perhaps pull themselves out of economic hell. Feed the little brown people, but don't teach them anything and don't give them any technology or education to better themselves, just a Snickers bar and a nice letter from some rich American liberal who thinks he is making a difference with his 20 cents a day.
- wendelgee2, on 10/30/2007, -1/+3Did you say "PSYCHE"?
I thought that joke had gone the way of "NOT" - drewlynde, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1oh yeah, and trick disabled people into working without pay, you forgot that one bud. Hmmm, maybe that is why their prices are so low... =(
- gpd209, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1In fact, those children in Africa should be paying $400 and sending one to a child here in the US! That would learn 'em a thing or two about the way economics really works.
- hayden.evans, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1this was a stupid project to begin with. buried as lame
