Pownce - Send Stuff To Your Friends
pownce.com — This is the new project from Leah Culver, Kevin Rose, Daniel Burka, and Shawn Allen. The app (built using Adobe AIR) allows you to send messages, links, files, and events to groups of friends. Check it!
- 2732 diggs
- digg it
- cfinke, on 10/11/2007, -8/+99So it's pretty much Twitter with support for posting files?
- zackkitzmiller, on 10/11/2007, -23/+4Can I be the first to ask for an invite?
- Cwo655321, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4no. next question.
- rebump, on 10/11/2007, -13/+24No, its pretty much lame with technologies posted all over it. Neat compilation of tech but why is this needed???
Let the ass kissin' begin though. - OGTL, on 10/11/2007, -5/+115"The app (built using Adobe AIR) allows you to send messages, links, files, and events to groups of friends."
Doesn't that already exist? I think it's called.. E-mail?- michaelb1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35That's exacty what i thought. Am I missing something?
Maybe KRose will discuss its "unique" features on diggnation.
I hope it HAS unique features. Otherwise why bother.- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9One... small... step for Kevin Rose........... One.. giant... step for ADD.
All I needed was another IM client.
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9One... small... step for Kevin Rose........... One.. giant... step for ADD.
- rebump, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Probably something to do with Leah though. Not unique so much as facetime, kissing up, and/or hormones. Har!
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2dude, i'd do her.
- michaelb1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35That's exacty what i thought. Am I missing something?
- chicagobiker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Look for this added to Twitter or Jaiku in 3...2...
- birkoph, on 10/11/2007, -19/+6You want me to use this CRAP rather than MSN and Yahoo messengers? ummm No thanks.
Back to the drawing board kevin.
Terrible F.- pyry, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3I have no idea how this software works, but maybe the idea is that sometimes MSN and Yahoo and AIM and so on just don't work under a variety of situations, and people aren't likely to have the know-how or access to get something as simple as a file transfer working with their network. On the other hand, gmail allows for big attachments, and that's what I do when all else fails, because it's pretty painless. I could get in the habit of something else though, but really, it'd have to be used by enough people for it to be useful.
- g3r4, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2You don't know its crap unless you currently use it. Do you? Probably not, right? Yeah...
- adderx99, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9think about it though. this is blogging, without the blog. it really makes sense. send your friends your rss feed and your done.
- lgoose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree! I think people are not taking advantage of the microblogging idea yet. But it's a powerfull tool. With almost any new web 2.0 site is the same story, when they're launched, ppl missuse them and say that email (or any other existing tool) can do the same. Just after some months (or different services) people get used to it and start to enjoy and push the service to the limit.
- noliberalbull, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33sounds to me like they're trying to reinvent email...
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Nah we dont need to do a feasibility study, everyone will use it cause we're awesome.
- fpcyber, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14Great. Why need this? Facebook already has all these features. Most people have facebook.
Buried: useless.- positron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Did you seriously just say that most people use Facebook?
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7from a man that hates on zune soooo very much, not least of all because of the brown, the pownce colour scheme seems oddly familiar.
but then some might say pownce appears to be as useless as a zune also. - Hickeroar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It seems to me that this is more of an AIR tech demo than anything else. Something to get the AIR runtime installed on People's PCs...
- zackkitzmiller, on 10/11/2007, -23/+4Can I be the first to ask for an invite?
- angelfelix, on 10/11/2007, -35/+4Looks cool! Is it available now?
- dburka, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28On the homepage: At least to start, we're keeping some control over registration so that we can scale the system under control. Scaling? It basically means that if a ton of people joined all at once at the beginning our site might slow down to a crawl. That would suck for everyone. So, as we get confident with the performance of the site, we'll begin letting more and more people in.
- angelfelix, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10My comment's popularity is inversely proportional to yours.
- Syrusviper, on 10/11/2007, -16/+42Sounds like a hybrid of twitter and facebook. Without all the crappy parts of facebook.
- beeudoublez, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Its handy for your friends to post links, without bothering you. Everytime I log into AIM people send me links of things to look at, but I'm busy. Its a good repository, and you can send to multiple people at once.
The group idea is a good concept as well, kinda like the 'Bulletin' feature on MySpace, but you can hit certain people that you've defined in a set - very clean.

- colouredlights, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1thx
- optikz, on 10/11/2007, -13/+5An other one of those too cool site that need an invite to get in...
- koregaonpark, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4Coolness!
- SwornPacifist, on 10/11/2007, -12/+145And it's called Pownce? Really? Have we just completely run out decent domain names?

- tHePeOPle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Ah, apparently we haven't run out of decent names then.
- zeejay, on 10/11/2007, -16/+1Dugg for being most original blogspam ever. ++
- Nossie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+38I'd have to say ... yes we have....
all those money grabbing bastards that buy batches of domain names just to try and sell them on should be put up against a wall and shot.- mattprice, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Shot? Nah, that's not violent enough and it's too quick.
- Doghound, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5To the Whip store!!
- defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2One day I came up with a project for a web app and posted my idea on deviantart. A couple of hours later when I went to secure the domain, someone had taken it. I even made sure it was free before posting the idea.
People...- Mikecol, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Wow. You REALLY should know better than that.
- Beakerz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Bring out the Anti-domainers!
- betobeto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+48At least they didn't name it Powncr.

- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -8/+7so the beta line is officially clogged to useless.
- Sarawanan, on 10/11/2007, -19/+6The service looks like it has potential, and 'Pownce' is pretty cool.
Now to the point, Invite please :) - sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -12/+128I'M IN UR URLS MAKIN EM PHONIKIAL
- shyboyswin, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1Dugg only for the LOLCODE reference.
- sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25Isn't Adobe AIR (formerly Apollo) only available for Windows and Mac?
I didn't think the *nix crowd would be so easily cast aside by Mr. Rose.
Anyway, heres hoping Adobe gets a *nix version out sometime before the end of this decade (and hopefully adobe doesn't pull a macromedia with flash and shockwave)- shawnbot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Adobe plans to have Linux support ready in the 1.0 release of AIR:
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Apollo:DeveloperFAQ#Does_Adobe_AIR_support_Linux.3F- Universal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Also, you don't have to download the software in order to use the service:
"You can do anything on the website that you can do in the software. However, it's faster, easier, and more fun to do a whole bunch of things with the software, so we'd definitely recommend it." - sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I think the question really lies in whether you believe adobe will be successful with their linux plan. I think that either *nix support will come way later than they actually say, or AIR will be one of those infinite betas. I love to be surprised, but I am not holding my breath.
- Universal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Also, you don't have to download the software in order to use the service:
- clievers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Also, the pownce site says linux is coming soon
- drzeus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So don't use the AIR app. There's a web interface too.
- shawnbot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Adobe plans to have Linux support ready in the 1.0 release of AIR:
- lennon2600, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Like Pando, except easier. It's a small little ute that'll be buried or bought, eventually. It's actually shocking that the developers of AIM, Adium, etc., haven't done this yet. It'd be nice to know whether it reads "poanced" or "pounced". Don't know whether either makes sense. We'll know more soon enough.
- Bob042, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Clearly the verb is to pown.
- joefreeza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I'm pretty sure it's pronounced like 'pounced'
- joefreeza, on 10/11/2007, -23/+4Finally a serious substitute for aim
But way better...
and without all the little 12 year old girls
and it's not owned by Time Warner
and it has a nice design
anyone have an invite for me?- g3r4, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I don't know where you pick up your contacts on AIM, but I'm pretty sure that's not normal...
- clos, on 10/11/2007, -13/+6unless it integrates into AIM i don't think i would use this....
- kturner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Does anyone know what protocols it uses? (Jabber please?) Or is this another closed IM network...

- JangoFett, on 10/11/2007, -6/+92I wonder how long it will take the RIAA to figure out that this will be used for mp3s and start sending the ceist & desist letters.
- joefreeza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14That's exactly what I was thinking
This could be a clean p2p app. - xtmno3, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3@Jango:

- Shriker, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4Is this the real reason why Kevin got a cat?
- LoganT, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2Kevin should have named his cat Pownce.
- sdcarter, on 10/11/2007, -8/+146Wait... "What is it?
Pownce is a way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. You'll create a network of the people you know and then you can share stuff with all of them, just a few of them, or even just one other person really fast."
Why wouldn't I just send an email?- Krovvy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Web 2.0, it's Web 1.0 ideas with community and social ideas. Web 3.0 will feature the same ideas as Web 2.0, but made for introverts and will have beefy privacy settings.
- petereality, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1nah, u clearly have web3.0 misunderstood. it's lifestyle integration into smart homes.
- meechwings, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Well, if you're sending a 100MB file then e-mail's useless, so if this lets you do that then it'll be useful. Especially if it doesn't plaster your page with a ton of ads, a la SendSpace/YouSendIt/RapidShare/etc.
We'll see.- howski, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Then you and/or your friends need a new email service. I can email DVD iso's to friends.
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Instead you will send it to your friend at a whopping 15-20k a second and you both have to be online at the same time. Sorta like you would have to do when uploading it to a file sharing site, except a little crappier.
- g3r4, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I think that this may turn out like facebook + filesharing. Possibly a good combination of MySpace (Profile customization, only done well) + Facebook (Stability and Maturity), but somehow i doubt it.
- petereality, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1hopefully with kevin's fingers on the trigger, it won't go the terrible aesthetic route of MS orthe overdeveloped unnecessary app route of FB.
- nitrousconsumed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0because i cant send 'home-made' movies, 'home-made' programs, or 'home-made' games over email. thats why you cant use email.
- sdcarter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Krovvy
That's the simplest explanation of the difference between 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 I've read so far... but ya know what? I still don't care. If you're an introvert then you're not going to use this anyways (you don't do "communities") if you're an extrovert then you're not going to use this (you already have easy ways to contact friends via email, SMS, and just calling/visiting). I'm not saying this isn't a good idea. I'm just saying I don't see a point to how it's going to make my life any more "convenient" than it already is (except by further integrating multiple forms of communication AND making me try to talk all my slow-to-adopt friends into using it). Personally, I'm waiting for my invite code... because I'm an early-adopter and will try just about anything once if it's new/tech.
@meechwing:
Well if you have a 100+MB file then what're you doing sending it over the internet anyways? Ask your friends how many of them want to sit and wait for a 100+MB file to download if it's not somehow related to a group project (ex: collaborative movie/music/program). Chances are that unless they're directly involved in the creative process they won't bother and will just wait for you to bring and/or pass-off a disc/flash with the data on it for them to easily access. I mean who wants to bog up their connection with downloads all day/night? Yeah yeah yeah... I know... torrent users already do it (and I'm one of them). But if my friend asks me to further clutter my downloading so I can watch some higher quality version of some stupid video he could have streamed on youtube then he's getting *****-punched.
Cliffnotes: I agree this is a great idea (in theory) and will totally check it out; but it's redundant and I can already get most of the features it'll offer me through GTalk/Gmail/GDoc/GWhatever-the-hell-else. Still, I trust Kevin's crew more than I do the Googlites.
- Krovvy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Web 2.0, it's Web 1.0 ideas with community and social ideas. Web 3.0 will feature the same ideas as Web 2.0, but made for introverts and will have beefy privacy settings.
- thelastknowngod, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3should be cool. i just need adobe to start supporting linux better and ill start using it.
- shawnbot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You can use the web app until then. In fact, the desktop app isn't feature-complete yet, so you'll pretty much have to. :)
- cfinke, on 10/11/2007, -8/+71Hmmm... The TOS says that Pownce.com is "granted a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable right to fully exploit" any content you send through the service. I'm not sure I like that.
- kevinrose, on 10/11/2007, -8/+86"Megatechtronium does not claim ownership rights in any Content that User chooses to post to the Site or send using the Services. 2-Leah is hot.- kuujjuaqguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1i think you mean to say "Leah is hot?"

- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2It's the e-mail 2.0 revolution!!
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's like regular email, except you can only send / receive email to certain people, and you can only send/receive email people on our site. -- And we keep copies of all your email.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I appear to be dugg down - if that's because people thought I was being serious, allow me to make it clear that I was being *very* sarcastic ;)
- MrFatalistic, on 10/11/2007, -8/+144it would have been cooler if it were just Pwnce, then you could say "YOU JUST GOT PWNCED!"
yeah I'm completely uncool.- michaelb1, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1I like pwnce better as well. but people would not know how to pronounce it.
- coastyvet, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Its like Tubes but with an IM client built in.
- Cimlite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's the vibe I'm getting as well... I assuming you mean this service:
http://www.tubesnow.com/
That service was far from perfect though. It was not very easy to use, sending invites via email is a hassle. It was not clear when people you invited actually got in your group. Not to mention the biggest thing you never saw what you were uploading, just that the program was working but no real info about anything. Applications that treat users like they are morons will never gain popularity.- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wasn't this site a sponsor to Diggnation?
- Cwo655321, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yep, i can't remember the ep though.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think it was like 4 or 5 episodes ago. Kevin was going on about how much he loved the service.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wasn't this site a sponsor to Diggnation?
- technovice, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The next version of Tubes (coming in 4 weeks) fixes all this and adds a lot more - instant websites from each tube, access with just a URL, invites from existing address books, no download required to access your stuff anywhere...
- Cimlite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's the vibe I'm getting as well... I assuming you mean this service:
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -11/+78I don't think I'm alone here when I say: Leah Culver is hot. Kevin needs to pownce on her.

- kitta, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Yeah, hard to believe, next the revelation that chicks use Digg will be made and the whole world will go splodey.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hey could you go flush the toilet for me and let me know what direction it spins?
- kitta, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Yeah, hard to believe, next the revelation that chicks use Digg will be made and the whole world will go splodey.
- xtmno3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4hmmmm..... http://www.digg.com/users/leahculver/profile
/watches her # of people who befriended her skyrocket
- cmorrell, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21I don't get what the difference between this and the AOL/MSN/Yahoo/Google/etc IM systems. Except that less people I know use it. With Trillian I can send messages, files, links and events to my friends easily. And, hell, I don't even need to use Trillian--I can do it via e-mail. I particularly don't get this: "Kind of like CC'ing an email, only recipients can see and respond to what you send." Isn't that what the Reply All button is for? What am I missing?
- g3r4, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Sounds like the features of eMail + speed and delivary of IM.
- rodzilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1and without the spam....yet
- saralk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1well if it is a closed system, then it'll be pretty hard for spam to get through.
- rodzilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1and without the spam....yet
- SonicRush, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Also, what if you're friends are not on AIM when you find the link you want to send? Seems like with this service, you can send it now, and they will get it next time they log on. Also, sending to a bunch of different people will hopefully be easier than it will be with IM clients.
- g3r4, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Sounds like the features of eMail + speed and delivary of IM.

- adholden, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8not down....just restricted to friends only! and btw...is just a funny quote from the movie 'boogie nights.'
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Nothing wrong with a little butter in the ass every now and again.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2HAHAHA. You sure took that down quick.
- Barbarino, on 10/11/2007, -12/+9This could be the dumbest thing to hit the main page in a long time. They invented the email list all over again!!!
- CatalystDM, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7I'm sorry, but this seems really lame. If I want to send a file fast over the internet, I have about 10 different other protocols out there I can use, the most obvious of which is e-mail. It's a good idea I guess, but like most Web 2.0 ideas it needs to be a full ecosystem before it becomes interesting.

- SonicRush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10According to this page it's 10MB for normal users, 100 MB for pro users. I was getting my hopes up too.... :(

- blurrie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9i think it has potential.
i don't know if the mainstream is going to go seek out and install air.
but for the people who do seek out and install things like the firefox crowd..
it could be cool.- ultrafez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You don't need the AIR platform to use it, you can get the exact same features using the website.
- bluephoenix, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2the name is terrible, the application is basically twitter for desktop with attachments? only tech people will use it, goodbye
- Krovvy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2The norms are evil, beware the norms!

- DirtyVegas, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4love it.... "Who can read my stuff? Only the people you choose get to see what you sent. Kind of like CC'ing an email" So basically couldnt you just use .... errr wait for it...wait for it......wait for it.... EMAIL ?? wtf, retarded kids.
- neoian, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I'm not really getting the idea behind this. Seems like you have made a skinned private email system with the ability to spam your files to everyone. Oh joy!
- oblivinated, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Did we diggers crash the server?
- Universal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29Whoa, is Megatechtronium a real company?
That's a bad-ass name right there :-)
Update: Looks at http://Pownce.com/about, notices
"Together, we formed a wee company with a great big name, Megatechtronium, that makes this software."- leahculver, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11http://megatechtronium.com/
- Universal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Thanks, I tried Googling it, er, searching Google for it and it didn't show a single result with that name.
I feel 'tuped :-p- jasnmb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Megatechtronium sounds like it should be a Transformer

- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Kinda reminds me of http://www.thoraxcorp.com/
- macewan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Brings to mind the building that is the corp. office of Oakley. There was a write-up in WIRED! a few years ago but basically the outside looks like this:

- Erisar, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Looks interesting. I really look forward to testing it out.
I'm in love with the design too; it's very sleek and clean. Nice job Daniel (I assume) on that front. ;)- angelfelix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I agree, the desktop version looks great.
- mobilitatis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes in the last trend, no frames at all!, just great!
- jschuur, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20It's great to see Kristen Bell got a gig coding, now that Veronica Mars has been canceled, but why did she change her name to Leah?
- supbra, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Name change, since the 22nd?? According to http://blog.pownce.com/about/ their post "Sencha" being able to send stuff to your friends blah, blah, blah. Im thinking either they changed the name last minute, hadnt decided or just wanted to keep it under wraps.
- jakejarvis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Interesting... http://sencha.com is in use.
- jschuur, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sencha == 'sent yah' perhaps?
- supbra, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0So they totally since changed the blog that I posted earlier. Still have a screenshot. Do they still have something planned for Sencha?
- stupidclese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yes it does sound a lot like facebook, admittedly with a lot of the fat trimmed off, but good luck selling the idea to millions of facebook users who already have most of this functionality. The only thing it has that facebook doesn't is the ability to send files, and selectively decide who gets to see various posts. I see no reason why they won't absorb this functionality in their next revision.
- adderx99, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2to all the people saying 'just email' or 'use facebook', think of this as blogging, without the blog. kinda like tumblr, but better.
- MMorris192, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3no linux support! D:
- g3r4, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Welcome back to the good ol' days. Linux users were getting used to organizations like Mozilla and OO.org releasing to everyone, but welcome back to the mainstream new software. (yeah, that was a weird cross of sarcasm and truth. nice catch)
- shawnbot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Not yet, anyway. As soon as Adobe releases the AIR runtime for Linux, though, you can bet that we'll make sure Pownce runs smoothly on it. In the meantime, you can still use the web app in your favorite Linux-friendly web browser.
- mcosmi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I think this is just another WEB 2.0 startup with one intention....to get bought. Im so sick of these companies that come up with some idea(some of them are terrible too) and create a site just in hopes to do something just good enough to attract some attention(and users) and then get their paycheck. People like this contribute and stand for nothing...
i sense another bubble popping soon, and these people arent helping any.
there is no point to create another chat/file app. Its a completely SATURATED niche. Expect them to sell real quick.- jschuur, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I think you're underestimating the mind set of a coder/web developer. They have an urge to craete beautiful code/sites, often born out of a need they see among their friends that hasn't been solved sufficiently. When it's done, the trick is to relate that vision to other people who haven't lived/breathed the project for the last 3-6 months.
When you've created a social app, at some point, you just want to open the floodgates and see how it scales and whether other people will use it in the same way as you. Why does everything have to have an exist strategy right away?
Besides, with their affinity to Revision 3/Digg/Kevin Rose, they have more options available to them, both in terms of infrastructure/exposure/funding as well as a sefety net.

"The software is available right now for Windows and Mac users and will available for Linux soon too. It takes advantage of a new technology from Adobe called AIR, which is super useful."
Could use a "be" in front of available guys. - Treoinmypocket, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"The app (built using Adobe AIR) allows you to send messages, links, files, and events to groups of friends."
hmmmm...gee....can't...I....do....all...this....allllreeaaaddyyyy? Yep. I can. My email has IM ... and I have an....addresss book....yep...and ...a...calendar...yeah....I think I've been doing this for more than a decade.
