- SpaceBass, on 12/05/2008, -1/+20Great site with a dedicated and passionate user group - while I understand how people draw the connection to other social networks, it is the community that makes pownce so great. I have no doubt that the UI and functionality of the site is what allowed that community to grow, I have no doubt that Six Apart will recognize that.
- alishagg, on 12/05/2008, -1/+19Don't shut down Pownce, please. That's all I have to say.
- cpoteet, on 12/05/2008, -0/+17Pownce has a true community which I haven't found on any other social media site.
- minmax2k, on 12/05/2008, -0/+16The comments here and elsewhere are a clear indication of the extent to which Pownce appealed to the regular users. I believe the dedication of the community stems from the unique quality of Pownce, which offers coherency of conversations, flexibility to comment beyond a 140 character "snigglet" when the situation befits, and the ability to share various types of content within the community, often "inline" within the conversational thread.
Pownce is not a Twitter clone! Pownce is not a site where people pop in every 30 seconds to update the progress of their bowel movement (ok... maybe once in awhile...) Sure, you can "tweet" a constant series of updates about nothing (a functional linkage with Twitter posts can be had) but those users who did so without ever actually showing their face on Pownce were pretty apparent as "pretenders" and often relegated to fan status in short order.
Pownce offers much more than Twitter-like sites, for those who seek more. I'm sure many didn't/don't, and that is fine. Just please don't allow Twitter to define the standard for future development, because frankly it represents the worst of our online culture... self-involved, short-attention-span tripe that seeks formalized by virtue of the technology that makes it possible. Why make our fully capable computers behave like cell-phones for the purpose of engaging in meaningful communication with others online? If I want to provide a status update to tell my dinner group that I'm 5 minutes away, that's a terrific use of text-messaging or Twitter. If I want to share insights about the latest economic landmine, I prefer something more meaningful than OMG! as a response. - blueBomber, on 12/05/2008, -1/+17I second that. Killing a service with a dedicated community seems silly. 10 bucks says that 6(break)Apart only sees Pownce as a simple Twitter clone. When in reality, Pownce is a town of tight knit people, while Twitter is a loud burp in an empty hallway. I don't think they realize what they have.
- bbax, on 12/05/2008, -1/+14Pownce is really a nice place. Please, keep it alive ;-)
- pennywise, on 12/05/2008, -0/+13It makes no sense and it's just in bad taste to take an active, hyperactive community and disband them. Six Apart is making a grave mistake by just turning off the switch.
- Jadielady, on 12/05/2008, -0/+12Because of Six Apart's actions I will refuse to take part in any "alternative" they suggest. I'm already on Twitter and Plurk, but neither has what I found on Pownce - a community (apart from my knitters on Plurk) :)
- parthans, on 12/05/2008, -1/+12Nothing can replace Pownce!! Please do not shut it down!! It means a lot to the community we have come to depend and learn a lot from!!
- holycheese, on 12/05/2008, -1/+12I agree with everyone else. Why can't pownce continue as is? I don't have a problem with vox but it isn't a substitute for pownce. It doesn't meet the needs of powncers.
Also the switchup and the way it was handled has left a bad taste in the mouth of a lot of the pownce users. Trying to herd them to vox isn't going to work for the most part. Many have flat out said, based on principle, they will not be joining vox.
The pownce users are saying you can buy the tecnology, you can employ the pownce dev team, but their community and loyalness can not be bought. - lechonlubber, on 12/05/2008, -0/+11I don't understand why Six Apart would buy a social network just to shut it down. They are destroying a nicely established community. Closing it goes against what social networking is all about! At this time, there is nothing that can replace Pownce. Please keep it alive.
- sarahcooley, on 12/05/2008, -0/+10If nothing else shows how much we love pownce, it should be the fact that people are still actively using it even though it will be gone soon. We all love pownce.
- blogkitten, on 12/05/2008, -0/+7It's not up and running to take the community yet. I'd rather keep the awesome community we have on Pownce rather than having to move somewhere new.
- artfuldodga, on 12/05/2008, -2/+9Pownce had alot of potential, most of which was not yet realized, more than twitter... more than alot of other sites out there, great community, it will be missed and i have much doubt Vox will replace it.
- decemberfall, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5Pownce is the first community that ever really grabbed ahold of my heart and never let go. It was the first site I have ever gotten a pro account for, just to support the site I LOVED so much and used every single day. It really does feel like a part of my family is being taken away from me. There is nothing like this site or the community out there on the web and there will truly be a hollow part in my heart without it.
- ashwilson, on 12/05/2008, -1/+5Buy and destroy has been the hallmark of many software firms over the years. Now that philosophy is making headway into web 2.0 and social media.
- killerofkiller, on 12/05/2008, -0/+4Save Pownce!
- ZogDog, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3I uh, never used pownce more than a couple times... but what they hey, "Leave Powncey ALONE!"
- SethEllis, on 12/06/2008, -1/+4I wrote a response to this issue on my blog today: http://www.enhancedperfection.com/2008/12/should-s ...
Why would you want to hand your community over to the very people that have decided to shut it down? If that's how they're going to treat communities I don't want to have anything to do with them. I'll take a community made solution like Topixz any day. - hacool, on 12/06/2008, -0/+3As I wrote on the 6A blog, it's not just about the tech or just about the people. But if you bought Pownce for both the intellectual property, the skills of Leah, Mike, etc. and the membership, then take advantage. The Pownce community is loyal. 6A is purportedly coming out with something even cooler. If you (6A) want us to use it, keep Pownce going so your customer base stays intact, then we'll all be there ready for Pownce 2.0.
- jademaid, on 12/06/2008, -0/+2Viva la Pownce! Keep Pownce alive!
They truly are hurting themselves with future projects... I assume people are going to be so upset about this that they are not going to look into their future projects because if they are so quick to drop an active and caring community... it's hard to believe they have strong convictions about their work. - bastienlabelle, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Topixz has an ugly name, and an ugly UI. What are we gonna do with that...???
- sd11208, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Thanks you.

http://bloggerstop.net - mgelman08, on 12/09/2008, -0/+1I have never felt abandoned by an online service before. Thanks Six Apart for the kick in the balls. Will rejaw replace pownce? Who knows!
- humanedited, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1what's with all the link spam????
- shamshamsham, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1I was, and still am very disappointed to see Pownce go. Pownce offered much more than other sites and I used it on a consistent basis.
http://thewatchmenshop.com - sarge8521, on 01/27/2009, -0/+1I used to use Pownce as a valuable resource but now it looks as though I'll have to find another tool, so long Pownce!

- zeeshansyed, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1I used to be a regular at Pownce community. It's sad to see this go down!

http://howtoquitsmoking09.blogspot.com - girz, on 01/30/2009, -0/+0Companies have to be open to direct communication from their customers, it's not longer possible to make these decisions in a vacuum. It will be interesting to see if Six Apart reacts to any of this consumer feedback.

- poison17, on 01/26/2009, -0/+0Pownce has a true community . I haven't found on any other social media site such community.

http://www.basic-directory.com - stybero, on 01/27/2009, -0/+0I don't understand the point of shutting it down. If a site is worth taking over, it should be worth leaving up and running. Pepsi didn't shut down Taco Bell, and they're not doing too bad... maybe there's a lesson to be learned there.
