- redrock34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Why are these big websites not backed up with UPS and diesel generators?
- catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Looks like its 364
- afx1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15365 Main congratulating themselves on 2 years of 100% uptime. Ha. http://www.365main.com/press_releases/pr_7_24_07_red_envelope.html
- xpose, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Arent those places supposed to have a diesel backup system? Or do they not pay enough for hosting?
- laughingsquid, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18I've been updating my post as more information comes in, as well as grabbing screenshots of the services that were down.
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Except the story is inaccurate. There was no drunk guy. There was an explosion underground that took out the power. People outside Main365 lost power.
- Grumps, on 10/10/2007, -9/+19Dude, its a DUP and sorry man, he has a better title than yours.

http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Drunk_guy_kills_internet - canha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Doesn't these datacenters have like, I don't know, power generators and stuff? Something for preventing this kind of situation?
What would happen if there was a nuclear war and Second Life was out? HOW COULD WE LIVE? - afred, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I was just trying to head over to craigslist, and it wouldn't load, so I came to digg and saw this. lol. nice timing!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Am I the only one to find this overly ironic? http://www.365main.com/press_releases/pr_7_24_07_red_envelope.html
"365 Main Inc., developer and operator of the world’s finest data centers, has provided online retailer RedEnvelope with two years of 100-percent uptime at 365 Main’s San Francisco facility. It has also reduced RedEnvelope’s overall energy costs by 33 percent during this period."
It was posted on 365 Main's site earlier today. And RedEnvelope seems to be down. - dafragsta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Did Google go down? They are fairly decentralized as all massive internet empires will be in the future, and probably won't go down short of a titanic natural disaster or an all out nuclear war. In other words, Google will be up until next week for sure.
- Avalontor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9hmmm, wonder if it's a good idea to store all your data at a web app place like google. I think a few folks would miss it if an outage like this lasted for any amount of time.
- TrojanGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yay for digg still being up.
- Saucy24, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6No wonder why 1up.com wasn't working.
- lroche, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4At least this story is more factual than the other one. Don't think a drunk guy caused the power to go out in San Francisco.
- pgarin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Interestingly enough PG&E has an article about 365 Main's back-up power generation and how they've saved money by eliminating outdated testing procedures... funny how that works. I'm guessing a whole lot of "IT professionals" are cramming, new procedures are being created and Public Relations people are going into overdrive. One can only wonder if this were a large earthquake what would have happened. What ever happened to the concept of redundancy? Let me guess, it qualifies as "An act of Dog..." P.
- Impact0115, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10Are you serious? Both of these same articles are on the front page, this duping is rediculous.
Buried. - HanSolo69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I was wondering why I couldn't obsessively browse the "missed connections" on CraigsList. What am I to do with the rest of my evening?
- Markers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You'd think their data center would have diesel generators with fuel contracts and batteries as a backup.
- Kwipper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Waaaaaaahhhhh! Second Life isn't working! Oh noes!!!! :/
- c0rtana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3365main has 10 2.1Mw diesels. So chances are they're screwed up somehow too...
- ejm508, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You don't plug in a Prius, dumbass
- iluvudigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Suppose that happening to Google and Yahoo (especially Google) ? It would be celebrated as a memorial day in the web world.
- akira117, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3you mean dupe :P
- kevnaca, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Here's the story on KTVU ( San Francisco local news)

Video:
http://www.ktvu.com/video/13748894/index.html - yndy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3beat me to it...
It's not like there aren't UPS and redundant power systems out the wazoo there...
What I liked best tho was: http://valleywag.com/tech/breaking/angry-mob-gathers-outside-sf-datacenter-282053.php
There are other datacenters in the area that were 'affected' by the power outages, but nothing like the wholesale "down for the count" that has hit the 365 main coloc - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://laughingsquid.com/man-crashes-entire-internet-all-online-data-lost/
- cryptoki, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2networking 101... thats why the big boys should have hotsites and data centers in another city. DNS can update pretty much instantly now across the global spectrum, .. theirs no excuse for not developing an infrastructure that if one segment fails.... another takes over. Downtime should be no more than 5 or ten minutes even if an entire site goes down. This is why your company needs a disaster plan in place, and to test it out once a month at 2am (scheduled outing) etc... I wonder if there's going to be some job openings ...?
- thekms, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Aren't the digg offices in SF too?
- Anthracene, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I liked some of the other articles on there too. Thanks for that post... I was caught happily unaware.
- racer108, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2At least Adbrite is down. Yes, I have adblock. But I still love to hate advertisers
- schnikies79, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm in the Midwest (Indiana). I have a 0% of having a flood (I live in higher elevation southern indiana). The power hasn't went out for damn near 10 years except for scheduled outages and I live in rural (read very rural) area. I've seen one tornado in my life.
Thanks for talking out of your ass though. - ChayD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You have a valid point there. Don't those datacenters have backup systems? I work in a fairly small colo facility, and we have Dual power feeds, 2 x 1 MW generators, UPSes and enough fuel to last us up to 13 hours in event of a power outage. Unless they've gone over their power budget and popped the main breakers when the lights went out (which I know has happened elsewhere in the past)
- thesarlacc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The UPS's have been outsourced.
- computergod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I didn't notice that until after I posted. Before this it just timed out though, so they do have some connectivity. All of the other ones seem to live up to the 'clicking random stuff' test.
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sorry, but you don't have a clue of what you're talking about.
IBM has done a ton of research on this topic. They evaluated each major location in the US for risk of Earthquake, Tornado, Flood, Forest Fire, Blizzard, Hurriane, Mud Slides, etc. All the major natural disasters. Then they factor in the reliability of power, water, and other utilities. From there you can derive about 10 - 15 "ideal" locations to have a data center. Most are in the South and Midwest.
Certainly not in San Fran. - jackmaht, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I went to check LiveJournal and I got the error, and came here.
- prezzy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1time for a third life
- hiscity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"This has been a test of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Internet Monitoring and Survivability Assessment Program (IMaSAP). If it had not been a test there would be rolling black-outs all throughout the northern hemisphere completely disrupting your web experience. As a result, the National Threat Condition has been elevated to Orange."
Please prepare an "information bomb shelter" of local wifi networks in the even that major worldwide networks are incapacitated. - Drizzit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1These sites have serious hosting issues. If a power outage takes out the datacenter and the trunk circuits leaving it then they really need to reconsider their arrangements. I'm surprised some of these sites have these issues and would have thought they would have planned better.
- inkhead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Okay at least in California now, there's been companies being fined for running their generators aka running tests too often and the pollution it puts out. 365 Main had a total power failure, you try powering several million square feet with backup generators instantly. My guess is some of the the generators were on, but ones that were many of the sites people visit were not. AKA the routers, traffic switches to folsom at&t were still going
- racer108, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I seriously don't this to happen to Digg. ever.
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Come on!
Any company dumb enough to host their web site in San Fran deserves to go dark. They have frequent brown-outs and earth quakes.
If you are serious about your web based business, your web site should be at a serious hosting data center, located in certain parts of the midwest, with redundant systems, power, fire surpression, etc.., - cryptoki, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1offsite hosting and or backups are cool..... but not easy when you have 1000's of blade servers im sure.
- ArenaRon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How will all the cheap hookers make money tonight if Craigslist is down?
- fef560, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What about texas :smith:?
- stockjones, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Its quite ironic to consider an area plagued with the possibility of devastating earthquakes to be the popular haven for your network infrastructure or hosted server.
- s0ritong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Craigslist is up, but try viewing an entry or doing a search.
It doesn't work. (At least in the Philadelphia area) - computergod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's weird, all of the sites that were down seem to be back up now. Craigslist, Technorati, SixApart, Sun, Typepad, and "satellite view" on Google maps are all back up. The only one gone still seems to be livejournal, but it at least has an error page instead of timing out.
- neatflux, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's just a matter of time:
