- SpazAttack5000, on 03/10/2010, -0/+19The description makes it sound like nuclear power is bad or something. May not be renewable but there is much worse out there.
- EnviroChem, on 03/09/2010, -0/+17This isn't about the servers, but rather the energy source used to power the data center.
- hbyrne, on 03/10/2010, -0/+14Yeah, so the source of power may suck for both of these, and Greenpeace looks particularly stupid for making it an issue for Facebook. But isn't the point to use as little energy as possible, and sounds like both Facebook and Greenpeace are focused on the right goal.
- benjfowler, on 03/10/2010, -1/+10Greenpeace are just self-righteous hypocritical douchebags. They epitomize the "ugly charity industry run amok".
What's unbelievable, is that they are completely opposed to anything nuclear -- completely and arrogantly oblivious to the fact that the billions of tons of carbon we're dumping into the atmosphere are far more destructive than a few tons of vitrified nuclear waste, which may end up being preprocessed anyway.
They're even opposed to nuclear fusion research, presumably because the invisible mind-control rays ***** with their chakras.
People hate Greenpeace for the same reason that people hate animal rights campaigners, Prius drivers and vegans. It's the insane smugness and pious self-righteousness. - nmanguy, on 03/10/2010, -1/+10It's cleaner and less radioactive than coal, so it's okay in my book.
- nmanguy, on 03/10/2010, -0/+8Greenpeace: It's easy to be green, just pay someone in the third world to be twice as green.
- WeAreDejaVoodoo, on 03/10/2010, -1/+8A major industrial installation isn't pretty? Shock, horror!
- Railz, on 03/10/2010, -2/+9"as well as nuclear power." uh. I'd be pretty ***** pleased if every server in the US ran on nuclear power. It's pretty ***** clean. In fact, I'd debate it being cleaner than wind power because you have to have massive eco-damaging farms to harness the same energy from the wind as you would an atom.
- edebolt, on 03/10/2010, -1/+7yeah but the difference is Greenpeace is on a mission from God.
- Ocyris, on 03/10/2010, -0/+6I thought the reason was cause greenpeace likes to make a big stink about the "dangers" of nuclear power... or something like that.
- edebolt, on 03/10/2010, -0/+6LOL and as Jake and Elwood taught us that when your on a mission from God then its perfectly acceptable to drive thru shopping malls to achieve the objective.
- Elohir, on 03/10/2010, -0/+5This is just laziness on Greenpeaces part. All it takes is a quick two minute phonecall to your datacenter to request they switch you to their solar power package.
- greeningusa, on 03/09/2010, -3/+8That's surprising and disappointing considering how many high quality green servers that are out there these days.
- JSDavis82, on 03/10/2010, -0/+4definitely. If you're going to be that radical about a cause, you better not get caught talking out of both sides of your mouth.
- Ocyris, on 03/10/2010, -1/+5People like you won't be happy till we're back in the dark ages. Even though we did just as much environmental damage back then it's just no one gave a *****.
- betona, on 03/10/2010, -0/+4But then they'd have to turn it off at night.
- tirau, on 03/10/2010, -1/+5Exactly. Too many people are ignorant or in denial of the severe aesthetic and ecological effects wind farms have on rural and natural areas.
- joker1972, on 03/10/2010, -0/+2***** spammer. Digg this idiot down
- JSDavis82, on 03/10/2010, -0/+2ha ha ha. all is fair in love and hypocrisy, i suppose. ;-)
- Railz, on 03/10/2010, -0/+1Raw material mining is a totally different argument. you find me a material that can be made without so much as a foot dug in any direction of the soil and you'll be a noble prize winner. Everything comes from the ground. Further still, the amount of damage done to that mountain is still less surface area than a potentially city driving wind farm.
Second - no one lives that close to the actual plant. Plus, in my opinion, living close to those 2 giant iconic towers associated with the plant would be kind of nifty. my 2 cents anyway - unpluggedboy, on 03/14/2010, -0/+1- Al Gore, our prophet/oracle savior, and anal(yst-the)rapist of nature.
- Ocyris, on 03/11/2010, -0/+1Wind farms? Ha!
Like cooltd825 pointed out we don't produce Neodymium anymore, we import it partly because of all environmental damage in the mining and refining process. As a result of the regulation it made it cheaper to outsource rather then clean it up. So guess what you're off loading all the damage to other countries instead. Great job.
Second it simply makes us dependent on another country for our power. Can build efficient turbines without powerful magnets and by-design you need a lot of turbines to generate significant amounts of power. So what happened to energy Independence?
Sustainability? If everyone ramps up production then expect shortages.

Sure nukes aren't completely clean but all these reason for wind are complete *****.
Clean and independent? don't make me laugh. Just changing which rug ***** get hidden under. - ico2ico2, on 03/10/2010, -1/+2Dear christ, this is the stupidest article I've ever read. Followed with some of the stupidest comments.
Does noone understand how an electricity grid and the associated economy works?
The only way to reduce carbon emissions is to either reduce energy usage or CREATE "green" energy. Buying these "green" electricity packages does nothing, they're a scam. No less coal is used.
It is, of course, worth noting that greenpeace's rant about facebook was just as absurdly invalid!
TL;DR: everyone stop bitching and moaning and build some damn wind turbines. - Hellahulla, on 03/10/2010, -1/+2All the "green" folks out there love to make a stink about nuclear. It's annoying and short-sighted.
- Hellahulla, on 03/10/2010, -0/+1I find Vegetarians in general more annoying than vegans. They are so self satisfied and fail to realise how hypocritical they are being. Also, vegans are so lacking in energy they don't have the stamina to be annoying for long, most vegetarians just sweat arrogance and piss pomposity.
- SocialStacy, on 03/10/2010, -0/+1"it's far more important to design these energy-hogging facilities to run efficiently than it is to ensure the most pristine energy source possible." I think its a shame that Greenpeace had to come out and slam Facebook the way they did. Instead of applauding Facebook's proactive efforts (they don't HAVE to do anything eco-conscious) and offering to consult on their efforts, Greenpeace throws the book at them for not going far enough. BABY STEPS! And if Greenpeace hadn't hung Facebook, then we wouldn't be commenting on this article right now.
Good find absolutelytrue. - cooltd825, on 03/10/2010, -0/+1and where do you think the metal comes from to make those wind turbines, localzuk?
http://gliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/aust ...
nothing is completely natural resource free. we'll leave an imprint on the environment somehow.
deal with it. - localzuk, on 03/10/2010, -2/+1Way to miss my point WeAreDejaVoodoo... The 2 prior posters had hit on the fact that wind is supposedly less clean that nuclear (which is nonsense), and that wind farms were not aesthetically pleasing.
You can't argue against something for being unclean and ugly whilst then supporting something which is even more unclean and ugly!
And to Ocyris, I support MODERN technology. Wind farms are decidedly modern. I would support clean nuclear, if it didn't require so much damage to the environment in order to fuel it! We can continue with our lives, but we should be doing it sustainably. People like you won't be happy until we're all dead from pollution, and unable to power anything because you didn't support investment in renewables. - localzuk, on 03/10/2010, -6/+2Yeah, Nuclear is so clean.. http://www.eaa791.org/Graphics/harrissafari/uraniu ...
Hardly damages the environment at all, shipping nuclear material all around the world in giant concrete containers, weighing huge amounts and therefore burning a lot more diesel on trains. We don't at all end up with massive amounts of nuclear waste which we currently don't know what to do with...
So clean.
