- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -14/+70Something like this can be useful on certain occasions. Sometimes I want to paste large txt docs via IM, only to hit the IM character limits.
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33This could be good if you didn't have a blog but wanted to write something up for digg...
- NoodlyAppendage, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37True.. we can't let all this web 2.0, AJAX, etc. go to our heads and forget what the internet is really intended for.

Only 1000 or so pages can be created with four letters/numbers :-)"
To which I reply:
Hmm, letters + numbers is 36 unique characters. So, with a combination of four, the equation is simple: 36 * 36 * 36 * 36. Let me whip out my trusty calculator to figure this one out: 1,679,616 possible pages. - ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Thats a great idea.
Too bad its not monospaced for ascii art. - boolean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14so how long is it saved for?
- modafekshen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12www.writeboard.com is a similar thing that lets you collaborate with other people, I use it a lot.
- cfinke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14This site isn't AJAX based. AJAX is different than DHTML, and this site uses no AJAX.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This thing is kind of lame. The google ads on the bottom are going to drive the googlebot CRAZY trying to spider all the new content - and it will likely only get seen once or twice...
Oh - and another cool trick: Disable cookies and hit refresh like a crazy fool. You will get your text to the top of the "top viewed page" like this one:
http://www.shorttext.com/qos9
(I shamelessly plugged my blog as an example of how people will overtake this site with mass refreshes...) - DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Can you have less that 4 characters?
If so then it's
(26+10)^4 + (26+10)^3 + (26+10)^2 + (26+10)^1 =
1679616 + 46656 + 1296 + 36 =
1,727,604 - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10only 1000 pages? let's see. If we had numbers only, we'd get 9999 max pages...
- cdreiling, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"True.. we can't let all this web 2.0, AJAX, etc. go to our heads and forget what the internet is really intended for."
I agree, how is this technology going to help me get my porn faster? - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Count the coincidences:
1. This thing gets put on Digg the day it goes live.
2. Anyone posting negative comments about it suddenly gets -1 diggs attached to their comments
3. The website stinks
They've got somebody on the "inside" trying to manipulate digg users into thinking a crappy website is cool. BEWARE.
They reset all of the pageviews for their comments once they realized they were stupid. They have a new pageview system in place... Check out
http://www.shorttext.com/qos9
And tell me if it still says "6" views - if it does, it means they have locked down my specific page that I used to show them how dumb they were. - Qwertie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If you use upper and lowercase letters and digits, you get 62^4 combinations = 14,776,336.
If I were running the site, I'd save the sequences less than 4 characters for myself. Or even sell 'em maybe. Maybe? If the site got popular. - petiejoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Seriously- they're two completely different sites. You can't cry dupe just because other people think of similar ideas.
- Trekkie711, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12yep great idia, easy way to share code
- TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7www.pastebin.com, www.pastebin.ca, www.deadbeefbabe.org/paste/.... it's all the same, really, only shorttext doesn't have syntax highlighting.
- strangeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now this is REALLY lame. Kinda like the first example in a PHP programming book.
- store formdata in a mysql database
- let it have a 4 digit "hash"
- if the hash is in the URL pull up the db entry for the hash and display it
(est. time: 10mins for beginners)
A sad attempt to make money off buzzwords like AJAX. - joshrt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't understand how this could be of any use whatsoever.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Did the owner of the website pay people to come here and vote down all comments that aren't glowingly positive about it? It sure seems that way.
So I'll ask again, what is the purpose of this website? If you want to send someone a note, you email them. If you want a note to be on the web for some reason there are a zillion places to do it. I'm asking honestly, what is the point of this website? - SBelyea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is there any word on whether or not this page is still in beta? It seems like the login feature isn't even available yet, and you can only create your own URL by purchasing it.
- Redth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The fact that this is AJAX doesn't really make it any faster to publish text to the internet. There are plenty of pastebins out there, and in fact I'd say this one is a heck of a lot better than that one (It allows pasting of text with tons of highlighting options AND images, and there's even a desktop client you can use to make pastes from your desktop):
http://www.pastehere.com - cantrap, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It could be an even faster way to publish if it did use AJAX. Giving the URL upfront, then posting the info while you type, avoiding that pesky "Create URL" button. ;)
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They will still drive the googlebot crazy - but they fixed something related to their tracking of hits. If anyone has an exploit for their new way, I'm all ears. I think it's funny to play with this junk website that is spamming digg.
- petiejoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5sorry- I'd been reading through the comments and saw the one dupe remark and then I thought you were the same person complaining again because I saw that you were the one who submitted it (no, I didn't go back to find the name of the person who cried dupe until just now).
For what it's worth, I think Changetolink is better because it allows some HTML formatting, which means that it could be used to say/show something that couldn't otherwise be typed into an IM client or some forums. - steubens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No 'AJAX' in this thing, chief.
Anyone that would use 'AJAX' as a verb to sell you something, probably has a bridge available for purchase, too. - steubens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I take it nobody noticed that there was no 'ajax' involved at all, nevermind being 'based' on it, good catch guys.
- putnam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is no AJAX on the page at all.
- steubens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dont forget people that digg sight-unseen given the presence of certain keywords like 'AJAX'. Sounds like a sure-fire way to go about that cliche', about the possibilities were you able to harness idiocy to generate electricity.
Except it generates revenue, not electricity. - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.shortText.com/e33t
- regedit2D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, I've seen it on a lot of tech news sites
- regedit2D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1porn is the only reason for web advancement
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a nice start...but I really can't find any use for it yet.
- EntrepreNerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting idea, but why not just get a Web Log from one of the 100's of free Blog sites out there?
- ahoier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha that's awesome. kinda like a pastebin, on AJAX
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.shortText.com/3p2r .. i wrote here : for MSN Nicknames => http://www.nicknameZ.tk .. lol .. just for Google
- thepandoras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.shortText.com/009b
- caseysousa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you're talking to someone on IM and you want to paste a large text file, then you shouldn't copy/paste it, you should file transfer the document. if it's that big, then the other person isn't going to be able to easily manage the copy/pasted text inside the IM window anyway, so you might as well send him .txt file instead that he can manage inside his preferred text editor. :-)
however... if you're sending a huge text file to multiple people, then it might be slightly useful, but even then, you might be better off emailing the doc to people.
the only circumstance i can imagine that this would be useful is in an irc chat and you want to post something for anyone in the channel to see, but you don't know their email addresses.
i still love you kevin! haha. learn how to use command+tab on your mac for quick app switching! - mcg321, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This isn't similar to tiny url at all...so why bring it up?
- sargant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Talk about reinventing the wheel.
Newsgroups - email - instant messaging. These have been around for YEARS (even in the span of decades now), and were *initially* designed exactly for this purpose - sending and communicating small amounts of text.
Look at the site's info - "Don't have a website? Don't want a blog? Want to share a piece of code...perhaps a receipe? Just shortText it!". Now, if you haven't got a website or a blog, how are you going to share this information? Yup - email or instant messaging. And the information you're sharing is now an additional click away.
Just because it can be done doesn't mean it should. - latour, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7you can just use pastebin for code
- DAJB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree - this is stupid:
Post a comment on the web and get a random URL which you must then email to people for them to find your comment. I guess you could pay the $2/year for a URL so people can return to read your gripping short text comments or you could just go to Protopage or blogger do it for free. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Kodek, you forget 0000. 10,000 possible combinations with numbers only. Same equation as with numbers and letters, 10 * 10 * 10 * 10 (number base ^ number of characters)
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Exactly. It serves no purpose except to generate ad revenue. It abstracts text, which is just dumb.
Besides, blogs and websites are free. - dreamkatcha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think the developers are very short-sighted if they can't see how easily this service will be exploited by spammers to peddle their junk. Do they even care? As long as the page views remain high they'll get paid by AdSense.
- RailsAddict, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yea, this thing is pretty crappy. You can break the layout by entering a comment with no spaces in it, i.e. LongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongTextLongText
Its pretty simple to eliminate that problem, and you'd think it would have been taken care of before being set free for people to try to destroy :) Also, the "View" system relying on cookies is very bad. My test post http://www.shorttext.com/4n9x is soon to be at the top,,,,, - zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5http://www.shorttext.com/axhs
=D awsome! - Lindsay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I've run across this problem on occasion too. Cool concept.
- Petrarch1603, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is there some sort of medal on the "Diggs" tally?
