- KlayBorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+55This would be great, imagine showing a pirate bay passport when you go travelling. That would be hilarious!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+54Why buy the county? I thought they were pirates
- DidntYouHear, on 10/12/2007, -4/+56Well commented, MrBabyMan.
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49Buying an independent island sounds exciting, until the MPAA severs the underwater cables.
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31i think they should just spend their money on a nuclear bomb and tell everyone to leave the alone. works for North Korea
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28They deliver the torrent files by cargo ship.

1. Satellite
2. Microwave
3. Undersea cable
To name a few, remember if all they are running is the tracker than the over all bandwidth needed is less. - labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Well there, is always space.
I guess its time to build a server farm in orbit, eh? - baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23how the ***** is an abandoned oil rig worth a billion dollars???
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21ooooo, space.
Space Pirates!!!!!!
I like it. - spookyttws, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Now that would require one damn long fiber optic cable.
- biiscit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23This whole ordeal is ridiculous. It will never happen.
But since we're talking about impossible dreams, I think they should buy a cruise ship. And just cruise the seas with all their servers and stuff, stealing oil from other ships on the sea. - fozzie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Who would have thought... the RIAA responsible for the beginning of WWIII?

- danielsamuels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Ha, take over by force and claim as your own! Sealand is 10km from me, and yet I had never heard of it. How strange.
- livesNbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I was just wondering how they were going to get internet bandwidth out in the middle of nowhere...
- labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@TheThirdWheel
Don't worry about that. Tourism will help make up the rest.
Who would not dig going to pirate bay isle! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22I don't know much about much, but I do know one thing...
They better legalize weed in their micro-nation. - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26Well researched, Smaran.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14honestly, i think they'd be better off bribing a smaller fully-recognized country to allow them to do what they want.

Yeah, all the rich 18 to 30-somethings who have soooo much money to spend on vacations to remote islands that they have to resort to internet "piracy".
As a pirate, I love the idea, but the simple economics of the idea aren't there :P - vlsi0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11leecher?

Is it just me, or does that send shivers than anyone else' spine? - baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12im sure they will. they should build a 5 star hotel on top of that oil rig, and have a concierge service that will bring to your room any drug you want. and your televisions will have unlimited free porn off the servers. and fresh fish from the sea. a Pirate Hotel in the Pirate Bay, a place for weary data pirates to rest their bones.. im liking the sound of that.
- OriginalLucid1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"this can't possibly get any more stupid."
Wanna bet? - labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Pah, If I am visiting Sweeden for vacation and there is a ferry that will take me out to Pirate Isle for the night, I would throw down $500 bucks for that.
- cybertron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Personally, i think that pirates all across the world should unite and gain control of a small country and setup shop as a safe haven; however, one scary idea to think about is the fact that in your own country, you are your only means of defense. So if you have no army, in theory, the MPAA could pay "thugs" to do whatever they wanted and they are not subject to any laws. *shrugs*
- tony134340, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I feel bad for them if they buy a micronation. Just think with the amount of tech on the place and anyone could supposedly overtake the island and steal it all. Kind of ironic that pirates are the ones the pirates would have to watch out for.
- cualcrees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They should move to Robonia....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Minerva - Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They can't even afford low-rent housing right now; It's absurd to believe they can raise the money to afford their own ***** island / nation.
Still, for whatever reason I donated $$$. A man can dream... *shrugs* - ThunderChunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's exactly why they need to operate off of an island off the coast of Alaska! The whales, our underwater allies will protect them!
- Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I got a cheaper idea,
Create a small cube/room out of concrete, put the servers in, and sink it to the bottom of the sea.
All it needs is a couple of cables running to/from it (for power + networking), and a couple of reserve servers & HDDs (so that when one goes down nobody needs to go down and fix it, instead just leave it). And you should be set for another 5 years.
The cables could be run to a nearby country, giving you have a setup I don't think any country's gonna seize!
I know it's not perfect, it's just a (stupid) idea. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Simply being *suspected* of *intending* to develop nuclear weapons didn't work so well for Iraq, though, did it?
- migbike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It seems to me that it would be cheaper to build their own Oil Rig/Military Ford/"Country" in the middle of the Ocean somewhere.
- johnnyhay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7From Wikipedia,
From 2007 Sealand is available for transfer by Spanish estate company InmoNaranja. It is explicitly stated that Sealand is not for sale, as a principality cannot be sold. A sum of between £65,000,000 and £504,000,000 (US$977 million, €750,000,000) is set as the price for the new tenant(s). Offers of "eight digits or over" are being solicited.
As of 16 January, donations are at $17,001.

http://buysealand.com/ - MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In all honesty, the government doesn't give a rats ass about piracy and "copyright infringement". Why does Canal St. in NYC continue to operate along with numerous flea markets. They just randomly do a few meaningless busts to get the MPAA/RIAA to STFU and make sure the PACs keep coming in.
"If not, what is to stop the RIAA/MPAA from hiring a small merc unit to go there and take them down"
... no comment necessary.
And remember Sealand already has guns on it! - Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7....ooor until surrounding governments/businesses are pressured into discontinuing any and all services/relationships to the island. I doubt they even need to go through the trouble of physically severing cables; they can accomplish their goal with a simple phone call.
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5what nationality will the children born in the island will be?
- dosle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5pro tip: do not host TPB on wordpress
- OriginalLucid1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The latency would be a bit much...
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You've got it backwards. It's not about de-criminalizing, it's about not criminalizing it in the first place when drafting a code of law. Best to start from scratch, and legislate only when absolutely positively necessary.
- pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I kind of like the idea as much as the next guy. But in the end, I think it's a dumb move. Being in another nation affords you all of the protections (legal and physical) of that nation. Being your own nation gives you the ability to generate your own laws, but it comes at the expense of providing your own protection.
Take Sealand for example, are they going to mount guns on it? If not, what is to stop the RIAA/MPAA from hiring a small merc unit to go there and take them down? Where will you get your supplies? Britain could be forced to not allow land access. It would seem almost trivial to cut off 'net traffic if they were to isolate themselves like that. What about power generation?
Unless they can find themselves a landlocked micronation that would require the cooperation of the surrounding nation for a siege, I think this is dumb. Cool, but dumb. - fordhamwt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just donated $20.

Would've bought a t-shirt, but it only sells in Sweden. :(
http://www.peer99.com/peer99W/usa/shoppen/steg1.asp?hkat=Piratshoppen - TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I like the idea as much as anyone, I love how it sounds like something a James Bond supervillain would do. But even with the tremendous number of hits they generate, their add sales, clothing sales, and donations can't possibly be enough to buy a country can it?
- labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A traveling TBP ship would be very cool.
However, they would have to mount a few M60s on that sucker, as it would be a tragic irony if they were attacked by pirates.
