  • gnomeuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because like me he might actually want one of these machines for himself while doing some good - it's an amazing project from a technology point of view not just as a project to get education to the third world.

    I love the community around GNOME, I love the spirit and love we see in that community around this project, to hold the result in my hands and knowing that I did some good in the progress holds meaning to me.

    * Third, we will market the laptops in very large numbers (millions), directly to ministries of education, which can distribute them like textbooks.

    They aren't going to deal with *small* numbers. This is intended to show the OLPC people that there is a lot of interest in the first world.

Sure, it's good that he wants to help the project, but he should be realistic. 1,000, maybe 10,000 is doable, but I'm willing to bet they won't even have the manufacturing capacity to build 100,000 of these things, not to mention the fact that it would completely undermine the project (as the idea is to have people /without/ access to these machines getting them). This "pledge drive" just turns the $100 Computer Project into Dell. [And no, even if they DO get 100,000 pledges, I'm betting not even a third will pony up the cash when and if the time came].

    Why doesn't he instead offer to buy three of the computers and send them to needing familes in the third world?
