- JakeBC, on 07/03/2009, -3/+121The Pirate Bay could be an entire ocean.
- StBucky, on 07/04/2009, -10/+112I was hoping this was about Data from Star Trek. Playing whack-a-mole with Brent Spiner would ***** RULE.
- tangytangerine, on 07/03/2009, -1/+88Who would have thought that the pirate bay closing would only lead to further redundancy in the Bittorent network?
- archiecstll, on 07/04/2009, -8/+91***** the RIAA...
But more importantly, huzzah to TPB founders.
As a business, TPB was the best there was. The founders have become legends to their "customers." They didn't sue them, they didn't hold to old archaic models of business, and they provided the exact service their users wanted. Long live The Pirate Bay!
... and ***** the RIAA for being the exact opposite of The Pirate Bay.
... and for being dicks in general. - kopiwrite, on 07/03/2009, -3/+70TPB founders. Peter has been speaking for years that it's not good that they tracked so many torrents. I think this is merely just the next step for the P2P community. TPB helped raise it to a certain degree, and now must push it away, just as parents push their kids away to be on their own once they reach a certain age and maturity level. The technology is certainly there for us to make a thousand new TPBs. TPB is simply now pushing us along. LET'S GO DO IT! :-D
- 0tis, on 07/04/2009, -2/+54You can't win, Copyright Industry Morons. If you strike us d[Removed due to a copyright claim by LucasArts]
- GumGuts, on 07/04/2009, -5/+54I'm still pissed at the Pirate Bay >:(
I would have given twenty dollars to the 'save the TPB founders' fund... - CalcProgrammer1, on 07/04/2009, -1/+50They say when one site dies 5 more are created to take its place. I think distributed tracking would be a good direction to move towards. If 5 independent groups establish 5 independent trackers/torrent hosts but all torrents uploaded are mirrored to all 5 sites and get tracked by all 5 trackers, the **AA's won't have the luxury of finger-pointing. TPB fell because there was a singular entity to attack, distribute the torrent hosting/tracking and it'll be like trying to take out a swarm of bees with a handgun, their plan of action only works when they can focus it on an individual or single group.
- Velnich, on 07/04/2009, -1/+45The training wheels are coming off... *sniff*
- Llanowar, on 07/04/2009, -1/+36The problem isn't really the possible loss of torrents, but more that the heroes of many "pirates" have arguably finally caved in.
Not only is this a big strike for the RIAA/MPAA but it's also a big loss of hope for the many who where depending on the defiance of the TPB guys.
But, we'll get over it. In the end, it's just one site with a thousand to take its place. It's a hopeless battle for the RIAA/MPAA. - whahaa, on 07/04/2009, -6/+33You can't win, Copyright Industry Morons. If you strike us down, we shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
- GeekNurse, on 07/04/2009, -12/+35That..........was gay.
- Elnicko, on 07/04/2009, -7/+29I kind of thought Pirate Bay were sell outs when I heard the news, but after reading this I'll still fly my Pirate Bay flag because it's not the site, its the community, all of us who use it. We're the real Pirate Bay!
- MWeather, on 07/04/2009, -1/+22"There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with expecting money in return to producing (or financing) ANY good..including music or movies."
There is when you expect that money after you're dead. - ranon78, on 07/04/2009, -4/+24" the entire Pirate Bay could fit on a single USB stick"
The torrents are a very small part of TPB. It also has millions of downloaders, tens of thousands of seeders, and a few thousand dedicated uploaders. It also has a great comment system, where normal users can figure out if a torrent is useful.
All this is very difficult to clone and will loose much of it's value if it is forced to split into a hundred different sites. - sickthoughts, on 07/04/2009, -1/+21@petersonca: digg has some 70+ employees.. they're doing it wrong.
- MrBabyMan, on 07/04/2009, -3/+22Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is all right to be!
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
You are a pirate! (Yay!)
We got us a map (a map!) to lead us to a hidden box,
Thats all locked up with locks (with locks!) and buried deep away.
We'll dig up the box (the box!), we know it's full of precious booty
Burst open the locks, and then we'll say 'HOORAY!'
Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee,
If you love to sail the sea, you are a pirate!
WEIGH ANCHOR!
Yah - har - fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is all right to be!
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
Arr - yarr - ahoy and avast, dig in the dirt and you dig in it fast!
Hang the black flag at the end of the mast! You are a pirate!
HA HA HA (Yay!)
We're sailing away (set sail!), adventure waits on every shore!
We set sail and explore (ya-har!) and run and jump all day (Yay!)
We float on our boat (our boat!) until its time to drop the anchor,
Then hang up our coats (aye-aye!) until we sail again!
Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee,
If you love to sail the sea you are a pirate!
LAND HO!
Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is alright with me!
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
Yar har wind at your back lads, wherever you go!
Blue sky above and blue ocean below, you are a pirate!
HA HA HA!
You are a pirate! - Canadian0207, on 07/04/2009, -0/+18certainly not the RIAA
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -7/+25No man, I'm pretty sure it was a website, I think you are obviously very confused.
- dontdoitjake, on 07/04/2009, -0/+17That is a very interesting way to put it
- MWeather, on 07/04/2009, -1/+18Spoken like someone who has never ran a website for cash.
- sickthoughts, on 07/04/2009, -0/+17Wake up sheeple!
- fretnoize, on 07/04/2009, -0/+16As long as he stayed in character.
- dafragsta, on 07/04/2009, -2/+17EVERYONE who actually has a finger miles within the pulse of The Way Things Work knew that when you take one P2P service out, ten more pop up in their place.
- Alverez, on 07/04/2009, -7/+21This is exactly what they've done. Those guys have millions stashed away some place. With that amount of traffic you could put up ads for sexual simulates for goats and still make a 10k a year easy! If you've not ever run a website for cash you have no idea the amount of dough these guys racked in over the last few years.
- Jaime2000, on 07/04/2009, -6/+20Yes, we are rallying against it. Copyright as implemented now is an inherently horrible idea and should not be supported. Long live piracy!
- miquonranger031, on 07/04/2009, -4/+18Well, Peter Sunde is partially right. It WILL be a good thing...for the amount of money in his wallet.
- Rencio7, on 07/04/2009, -0/+13Hard but not impossible at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVes_PdNufs
Not saying I could do it though. - benologist, on 07/04/2009, -25/+37lol the propaganda machine keeps on spinning.
Nobody is going to step up and carry all of the liability for TPB so they can continue harvesting billion/s of ad impressions a month.
And "we" are not The Pirate Bay. The Pirate Bay are 4 guys who made as much as they could while they could, and now they're getting out before they suffer any more consequences. - fuzzymuzzy, on 07/04/2009, -1/+12Wow read some of the comments below the story, they're written by some real nutjobs
"TPB was certainly the best site in that it represented unlimited freedom, but all centralized movements are viciously attacked by the fascists who run the governments of the world (google: “new world order”)." - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -1/+12Glad I wasn't the only one.
- MWeather, on 07/04/2009, -5/+15How many other websites hold seats in European Parliament?
- KibibyteBrain, on 07/04/2009, -2/+12How do you know they sold out? We have no idea what sort of ***** went down. For all I know, TPB was facing some sort of legal ultimatum of being seized if they didn't sell it ASAP. I'd rather see them lose the site for some cash than for free. I know everyone here on digg likes to play lawyer, but it seems rather imposing even with those standards to jump to conclusions on their conduct in this matter.
- nard3456, on 07/04/2009, -0/+10***** The Vexed Soul.
- appleofdischord, on 07/04/2009, -1/+10For me at least, the Pirate Bay was a sort of standard bearer for filesharing - not in the least because of their legal threats page.
- freezo1994, on 07/04/2009, -0/+9killing one bee with a handgun is ***** impossible.
- loneraver, on 07/04/2009, -0/+8I was disappointed with this too. I wanted to see Data play Whack-a-Mole.
- Meocross, on 07/04/2009, -0/+8ping -i 0/0 -q www.LucasArts.com
- apostledeets, on 07/04/2009, -1/+9The problem is the COPYRIGHT HOLDERS get compensated, as in RIAA, MPAA, etc. The artists who actually make the media still get shafted. Now, if they worked on a model where the actual artists get directly compensated, I think that would be something the Digg community, hell, pirates in general, would get behind.
- Professr, on 07/04/2009, -4/+12The term "The Pirate Bay" is a name, not a website. That name can refer to the website itself, or it can refer to the organization or the idea behind the website/organization. Obviously you don't understand the concept of symbolism.
- Travelsonic, on 07/04/2009, -1/+8The "p2p community" is not one homogenius blob of thought
- DaviDTC, on 07/04/2009, -1/+8Or perhaps if they didn't pay their legal fees their family was going to suffer as the courts went after their money and possessions like their savings, cars, houses and anything else to pay off the legal fines.
- ConfusedCartman, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7Tons of free virus scans? Woo! Thanks mysterious stranger! I've got three of them running at once, just to be extra extra sure. :D
- funkytaco, on 07/04/2009, -1/+7MacHeist is a good example of a business model that could work for torrents, or maybe even Woot.
- Biohazard6601, on 07/04/2009, -2/+8***** the Police?
- tgc1, on 07/04/2009, -0/+6Love the bees vs. handgun reference. Well done!
- Nairebis, on 07/04/2009, -2/+8@petersonca -- yeah, because lord knows, every high traffic site loses money hand over fist. /s
In other words, you don't know what you're talking about. Not every ad-supported site pisses away their money. TPB had enormous traffic, and relatively small expenses. They made huge profit. - o76923, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5I'm pretty sure you're confusing chimera with hydra...
- o76923, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5you could move it to Spain. The official government position in Spain is that file sharing isn't illegal.
- benologist, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5lol. Mininova manages to pay 5 salaries on a torrent site about the same size running on comparible infrastructure, monetized in the same way.
Don't kid yourself for a second, TPB at it's peak would have been making at a minimum hundreds of thosuands a year. -
