- Qliphah, on 10/12/2007, -6/+135Just a word of warning to people, this person could be collecting cel phone #'s to sell to telemarketers or whoever.
I didn't look into the site much but nothing is said about any type of privacy so anythings possible, and with the way telemarketers are trying to get unlisted #'s nowadays the guy could have a gold mine on his hands. - radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+72Usually when I'm talking to somebody and they suddenly get a phone call, I don't think they're popular. I just get annoyed.
- mrlovell12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+62If this makes the front page, this company is going to go broke.
- CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49"telemarketers aren't allowed to call cell phones in the US because you pay for incoming minutes"
Tell that to Comcast. - laplie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49telemarketers aren't allowed to call cell phones in the US because you pay for incoming minutes
- andy101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Apparently "Rennington's Windows & Doors" doesn't understand that.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34These guys are paying out of pocket? They're about to get dugg broke...
- holmes101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30This would be great for pranks...
- RedGiant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Put in your best friend's number.
Set it to 3:00am
No more best friend, but at least you're happy! - doug565, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27wow.. i just had a girl call my phone and it felt so cool. Now my mom thinks i got it goin on.
- Etaoin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26@Qliphah:
It's aimed at cell phones, and it is very illegal for a telemarketer to call you on your cell - it doesn't even need to be on any kind of "Do Not Call" list, although if it isn't on the list the telemarketers may not know it's a cell. If you ever get a telemarketing call on your cell, all you need to say is "This is a cell phone" - they will apologize profusely and never call you again. (If they do, they can be heavily fined by the FTC.)
Of course, you can add your cell phone to the Do Not Call list if you like, either at donotcall.gov or by calling 888-382-1222 from the number in question.
More information from the FTC here: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2006/06/dnccellphones.htm - Poppeseed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23You can't call between 1am and 7am.
- Darmichar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25@laplie
Wrong. When you provide a number to someone, you are giving consent to them and any 'representative' of them to call you, cell phone or not.
It is only illegal for them to call a cell that you have not given permission to call.
Entering your number on that site makes it fair game for telemarketers, until you register it on the DNC list. - Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20"Sorry, we can't call Alaska or Hawaii yet. Maybe if you take us there on vacation we'll make an exception for you."
Arg... I was gonna call my friend. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20the affirmation call is hilarious .. and creepy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+31So basically we're digging the arts of lying and deception.
Right... no digg. Make friends, love your job, and you won't need this. - evolseven, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Or maybe.. we just dont care that anyone else exists..
- djames82, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18that's why your make fake calls...because you're not popular.

- jennylc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Hi this is jennyLC, the co-founder of popularitydialer.com. It's been very cool to read all your comments, even the negatives ones! I apologize if the service is not perfect yet. We're working hard to improve it.
And don't worry, Cory and I intend for the project to bring joy and silliness to your lives. Thus, we won't be selling your numbers to any telemarketing companies!
thanks for your support,
jennyLC
popularitydialer.com - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15im making one now before it hits front
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"Maybe you wanted to look extra important or popular on that hot date"
Or maybe you just wanted to look like a total douche bag talking on your bluetooth earpiece while a hot date with yourself... - slappy117, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16HAHA I just pranked my cousin with this.
- SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15They already know what the area code is -- they probably just figure out the time zones from there.
- Phlag, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I just memorize the buttons I need to press to play my ring tone manually while my phone is in my pocket.
Menu-6-3.
Either navigate to the "Media Gallery" or whatever the ***** your phone has, or try to change your ring tone, and it'll play it.
It's not too hard to push a few buttons nonchalantly from your pocket. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14^ how do they judge the time zone?
- falcon1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15So you then proceed to talk to no one? This seems pretty stupid to me. If you are on a hot date, you wouldnt want to answer your phone in the middle anyway. If you have an awkward social moment, learn to talk to people...its not tough. Whole thing seems pretty lame to me.
- djames82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I tried that...but WHAT IF someone actually calls you? If I hear someone talking on a cellphone and all of a sudden the cellphone makes a ringer sound...I know that person was talking to themselves. (you have to be quick with the volume of the ringer)
- mmrz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I dunno bout you guys... but my cell phone has an alarm clock on it that allows me to choose whatever ringer I want as the alarm.
I could just make the alarm's ringer my default ring and set it to go off at a certain time.
Too bad I would have no reason to do this... - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Backing up Eatoninninin: Telemarketing to cell phones is illegal, regardless of your relationship to the caller. Only calls that are in some way related to the services you are providing the customer may be made to cell phones; telemarketing, despite any prior relationship, is prohibited.
However...
Q is correct in that by signing up for this service, *this* company can all you a billion times about say, upgrading your account and why you should etc. Because technically, they are calling you about your service.
Key distinction: telemarketing, not legal. Calls about one's service: legal. - Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11fufubag: except from mexico. ;)
- oSiBo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10No Canada calling :(
- deskimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I always have my wife call me on hot dates. You really look like a player when you're talking business with your wife in front of your girlfriend.
- chillypepper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I was about to suggest that. little actionscript/ automator would probably do the trick with free skypeout
- jobeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7hilarious, some guy gets pwnd.....
http://popularitydialer.com/popsound/zachlayton.mp3 - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Great digg broke it. It dident work for me. When it is working tho, lol everyone put the RIAA's phone number in! There number is (202) 775-0101
- InDiggNation, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10This would be a great way for one of those telemarketing places to get your number.
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's dugg into oblivion.
Alternatives? Would it be possible to script Skype since there's that free Skype Out?
/needs this service desperately
//always in uncomfortable situations - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8What a losser you are, you can't even spell right. Losser.
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Be the smartest: Turn the phone off! When a phone vibrates against metal (like your change) it can be louder than your ring tone.
Turn the phone off, your penis may thank you later in the night. - 5abi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6they shud hook this up to skype some how so its free for them and available to all of US and Canada
- brainache, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You pay for incoming minutes on cell calls in the US? That sucks. That means you can't call up a friend and then hang up straight away so they call you back, when you have no call-time left. That sucks.
In the UK and the rest of Europe i think as well, calls to mobiles are charged to the person dialing (because mobile numbers are easy to spot, beginning with a 07 in the UK for example). - M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7US only :( :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5they do know your state, indirectly, using your area code
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The site is getting dugg. I keep getting "too many calls scheduled for this time" errors.
- jjesusfreak01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You dont just want a simple Skype script, you need something more. Have your wife prerecord a seemingly important message, or record a call your boss makes to you. Write the Skype script, and have it accessed by clicking a desktop link (or three, one for each recording). When someone comes to your desk trying to talk to you, simply click the link as quickly as possible, act normal, and in about ten seconds the phone will ring and a very convincing message will get you out of whatever conversation you were in.
- KSOVII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is a similar site, except you type what you want it to say and it uses a TTS engine:
http://ws.cdyne.com/NotifyWS/phonenotify.asmx?op=NotifyPhoneEnglishBasic - bantic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hey everybody, this is Cory, the other cofounder of the popularity dialer. Jenny and I are having a great time reading your comments and getting your suggestions.
I just wanted to say hello and let everyone know that you don't need to worry that we're going to give out any numbers to telemarketers. There's no way in hell we'd ever give out anyone's phone number.
We're really enjoying hearing from all of you, and the calls are humming right along. Keep 'em coming!
best,
Cory - ozguralaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7True prediction
Enjoy before it goes frontpage :) - judsond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think Cingular does this for people on their plans now, it's part of the 411 crap I think. I don't remember if it's free, but I think it is.
