- ScytheNoire, on 10/10/2007, -2/+70Why has terrorism, or the potential for terrorism, caused the lost of freedom among democratic, or formerly democratic, countries? This is what the terrorists want. They want a world just like theirs, where every thing is censored and there is no such thing as freedom in any form. Pathetic.
- ruiacp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35They want us to collapse in fear. Politicians want fear to control us.
- mavedatthews85, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33Yeah, because terrorists frequently search Google for instructions on how to terrorize people.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Please remember to be civil and rational in explaining why this proposal is against the principles of democracy. - Degriz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16How is this going to work? So they censor certain keywords? This will stop nothing. More disasterous treating of symptoms, so much easier than addressing the problems that are the root cause of why people want to blow each other up...Ive got a copy of an old Anarchist Cookbook on a floppy somewhere, does that make me a potential terrorist? Information wants to be free...
- azpat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Do they not understand the nature of language? Censor words and they'll just use different words. Just think about how many words we have for marijuana. That's so kids can talk about it without letting their parents on. Todays parents know what weed is so kids say chronic and KB and whatever they're saying now (me: out of loop). but you ge the idea. censor one word and they'll use another.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12It would seam the terrorists are outsourcing their work to western governments. Everything these governments have been doing in the name of "ending terrorism" only goes to further enforce the idea that terrorism works.
- protogenxl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11He wants to filter the word "Genocide" from the internet, This sounds like a Man With a Plan.
- chan0429, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Quoted quite a bit but.. maybe if it's repeated enough times the legislators will take it to hear.
"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" - Benjamin Franklin - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11"Suggested keywords to be filtered include “bomb”, “kill”, “genocide”, and “terrorism” whilst any attempt to get around these restrictions, by using a proxy, for instance, will be met by criminal action."
This is absurd. Obviously, every time somebody is planning terrorist actions it goes like such:
Joe: Hey Bob, let's plan some terrorism for after dinner tonight. I'm thinking genocidal scale, perhaps killing some people with bombs.
Bob: That sounds swell, Joe! - ontain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10the USA really needs a pirate party of it's own.
- xister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+93xcus3 m3- I'm a t3rr0rist and I w4nt t0 kn0w h0w to m4ke a b0m|3. C4n 4ny0n3 h3lp m3 out?
- mookieXL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8"bad word" filters never worked, and never will. (see: l33t5p34k)
- jimboejw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7"Suggested keywords to be filtered include “bomb”, “kill”, “genocide”, and “terrorism” whilst any attempt to get around these restrictions, by using a proxy, for instance, will be met by criminal action."
Well they were going to blow themselves up, just needing to know how to make a bomb, but the fear of a warning letter from the EU has made them decide against it...
/sarcasm - Osjpr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8HOW THE ***** ARE THESE BUREAUCRATS GETTING AWAY WITH THIS ??????????? This is when we revolt, people.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7"arrrgh" = positivie response
"naarrgh" = negative response? - NJank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Mike: Hey Steve, I feel like a little genocide tonight, how about you?
Steve: Sounds great, but where would we begin? I've never done that before. Charlie?
Charlie: Come on, guys, it's the new millenium! We can just Google it!
**5 minutes later**
Mike: well now what?
Charlie: I don't know, I'm stumped. They blocked all the keywords.
Steve: Now we can't kill lots of people. I guess we'll just go back to being honest, hard-working, productive members of society. - strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7At least we could filter out all those idiots who are still using the phrase "Da bomb!"
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Great, that's all we need. Filtering out the word genocide would just add fuel to the fire of holocaust deniers.
Can't find anything on the Internets about it, must not have happened. - JSager, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If you can type pr0n to get past work filters...
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6What the EU needs is a government to lay on top of the EU government. Like an Uber-EU. Another level of government always ends up providing increased freedoms.
- noser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Avast ye mates! Be Dugg for the 'Narrgh' reference.
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6So, according to their proposal if I were to search for "How to survive terrorist attacks" or "psychological effects of terrorism" then my searches would be censored. Therefore I would have to depend on the information the government approves and dispenses. THIS SOUNDS LIKE CHINA.
- Garou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Please Europe, don't go the way of the United States.
- Ryan121, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm just shocked that someone within the European Union is suggesting censorship!
- z0mbie2099, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The boogie man exists so we can have numerous laws that governs over us and lets big corps party like it's 1969.
- sardion2000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Yeah, but unfortunately the 19 who flew into the WTC didn't. They want to set up a global Islamic empire ruled by Sharia law. The Ironic part of all of this is that in response we are doing exactly what they want us to do, and that is to suppress our freedoms that they hate so very much. Facing this fact will quell your fear and make you stand up to the idiot politicians that want to bring in their own version of Sharia law, though with an Evangelical twist. An example? Patriot Act. First step in the road towards Far Right Fascism in North America and Europe.
- Riberi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Yeah Ed you probably are.
Terrorist would have never been able to think of such a clever solution. I mean criminals always use dictionary suggested words, don’t they? They are probably so stupid they have to look it up first. - caupolixan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yep! Aha! I will feel much more secure knowing that terrorists can't use certain words on the internets.
- HolierThanYe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's not hard to find terrorists saying things like these. Implementing muslim rule worldwide is exactly what the extremist sects want. And the type of rule that they want isn't too far from what we're everyday progressing towards. Theocratic government, male dominated society, hatred of homosexuals, control of the flow of information.... The similarities are really quite startling.
- heavens_peak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This i have to admit is one of the scariest things I've read in a long time and I'm Irish! I actually cant believe someone can be that stupid how would that EVER work!? I think I've just lost all faith in mankind....
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Idiot under question: http://www.joergspielt.de/wp-content/uploads/kille ...
- Elohir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Haha great, you just made me choke on a cracker.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If by "they" you mean this single individual who only has the power to _suggest_ laws to the council and parliament, then yeah, probably.
- Lennalf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And by "terrorists," I have to assume you mean the multinational corporations and corrupt government officials who use FUD to deprive of us our human rights and civil liberties. Because last I checked, they are the only ones who stand to profit from this kind of *****.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"They want to implement extremist muslim law." == "They want a world just like theirs, where every thing is censored and there is no such thing as freedom in any form"
- icon1985, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3censoring a few words on the internet in order to prevent potential terrorism is ridiculous.
- theelectricafro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They should censor the following then : CIA, FBI, MI5, MI6 etc. Considering enough of their agents and heads have gone public stating their involvment in Terrorism.
- blen2r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah but if we associate muslim (or other religions) directly to terrorism, it creates even more tension between religions/people/citizens (in this country or worldwide) wich may turn into more violence. We must make the difference between "terrorist" and "different". By enlarging the term "terrorist", it makes it easier to apply it to people who aren't terrorists (peaceful protesters, independant press that releases articles against war...) That may seem far fetched but it may be possible in the future...
- Wootery, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3@blen2r
"Yeah but if we associate muslim (or other religions) directly to terrorism, it creates even more tension between religions/people/citizens (in this country or worldwide) wich may turn into more violence"
Truth > your politically-correct *****. - HolierThanYe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Look at some of the responses to your statement. People are blind to their loss of freedom. The terrorists already won.
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"They want to implement extremist muslim law."
You typed it. How exactly did you miss it? Do you think censorship is not a part of "extremist muslim law"? If you do, you're more than delusional and a part of the problem. - strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3First, yes, various groups have called for everyone to just adopt their version of Sharia law and then we can all get along and be happy.
"This is a continuous Crusader-Zionist war against Muslims. In this respect I am inviting the mujahidin and their supporters in the Sudan and other countries around, including the Arabian peninsula in particular, to prepare all that is needed for a long-term war against the Crusaders and thieves in western Sudan.
Our objective is obvious, that is defending Islam, the people and the land but not Khartoum government since our differences with them are so enormous, mostly when it backtracked in implementing the Sharia law and abandoned south Sudan."

But I'm sure you'll tell me that what his version of Sharia law is the friendly, fun kind, right?
But that's not what my post was about.
The person I was responding to seemed to contradict original post, and then basically agreed with it. - SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"If you live in the EU remember this person is supposed to represent YOU."
No, the members of the parliament are not supposed to represent you. The commissioners are members of a -wait for it- commision employed by the European parliament. They don't make laws, they suggest them. They are more like a thinktank for the parliament and the council. - NJank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Short and sweet message:
Dear sir/madame, you have recently demonstrated your complete lack of understanding of modern technology and communication practices. Please, before continuing in your attempts to create laws regarding such, get a competent technical advisor on your staff. Thank you. - blen2r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree with you but "go listen to what the terrorists say before you make up your mind."
Where do you go for that? - ktetch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You mean like the one that signed the press release, or even the one who's site the press release linked in the article is sitting on? Has google already beaten you?
http://pirate-party.us - xister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Gee- If that went through, It'd suck to be a reporter in the Euro nations trying to do research on terrorists or any related stories. This is just a bad idea.
- struds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2indeed, i think the quote form the press release from the pirate party sums that up pretty well:
“Finally, we demand that politicians stop associating terrorism with bombs and attacks,” says Andrew
Norton, interim Chairman of the Pirate Party of the US. “Such actions are a means to an end, they are
not the end itself. The point of terrorism isn't to explode bombs, it's to create fear, undermine public
confidence and narrow the way of life for the ordinary citizen. Plans such as the commissioner's are
not preventing terrorism, they are helping terrorists to achieve their real objectives. In effect, by these
actions, the commissioner becomes the terrorist.” - amigabill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Disagreement with this kind of censorship should go well beyond any pirates. Why should I be put in jail for looking up how to build a bomb shelter, wonder how many US solders have been killed in Iraq, or what countries are the biggest targets of terrorism? (So maybe I can choose to not live in such targets)
This is a stupid idea. Removing words from our vocabulary is rediculous, especially when they are so prominent in the news and world events. If they're trying to move toward Newspeak as a language, it seems this is going about it backwardsly. I can't imagine how this censorship would be at all useful to the said goal of reducing terrorism. They already know how to do those things, and will be able to share it with new recruits. How can this censorship possibly do anything good or useful? -
