Iran = noob - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+108Were these the same Iranians that also cured AIDS?
They didn't crack Vista, they simply downloaded the same torrent as the rest of us and are selling it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+98Geez first they cure AIDS and now they cracked Vista?! Touche Iran....touche...
- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+86FYI: Authentication is a joke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+63"While the original version of the OS is selling for around $650 you can easily get your hands to this pirated version for just $8. "
I wasn't aware Vista more than doubled in price.... - sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+48Huh? There are pirated copies of Vista being sold all over the world... Vista was being sold as pirated copies when it was still in beta... this is not surprising whatsoever and i'm not sure why it's on the front page :/
I buried the story, but not for being innacurate but simply lame... it's sort of a given that when famous software like this comes out you can get your hands on a pirated copy... - libertao, on 10/12/2007, -9/+47@theblooms
No, they all live in caves drinking goat's milk. - DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43I actually bought Vista. First Microsoft OS I've paid for. Installed it, now I can't use it because I'm unable to activate online because it didn't allow me to install drivers, and activate by phone isn't working right now because my phone service here is spotty.
Only goes to show all this anti-piracy stuff only inconveniences the paying users, while the hackers just waltz right past those measures like they weren't even there. Maybe I will download a crack'd Vista so I can use the product I paid for. This is the first, and last, Microsoft OS I will ever pay for. Back to Bittorrent for me. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Roundy: It was a joke...
Uglie: ...It wasn't funny. - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Just wanted to point out, Iran IS in Asia!
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34I say we go to War with them
- loqqq, on 10/12/2007, -11/+39You've just been informed of the real value of Vista -- cancel or allow?
Allow. - latova, on 10/12/2007, -31/+56Well, Bill Gates DID dare us.
Besides. Vista isn't even worth 8 bucks. - netnifty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Vista Ultimate Edition in the UK costs £369.99 (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3299812/Microsoft_Windows_Vista_Ultimate_Edition/Product.html) , which is US$727.(http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&hs=GaX&q=369.99+gbp+in+usd&btnG=Search ).
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25That's not the only bargain in Iran either....
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21they are planted copies by the US. its all a conspiracy to get Bill Gates to go to war with Iran so the US doenst have to.
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22@Embrace Microsoft just switched the '$' sign for the '£' (British pound), effectively doubling the price in USD to $630, instead of converting the US price into pounds.
- trer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24You can threaten to build nuclear weapons.
You can have a history of human rights violations.
You have a non-democratic theocracy as your government.
You can even send fighters to Iraq to fight US Soldiers.
BUT YOU DO NOT EVER UNDERMINE THE PROFIT MARGIN OF AN AMERICAN CORPORATION!!!! - VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16this is right on the spot. in saudi araba is it 8SR = $3 usd for ultimate i have a family member living in SR right now, and told me that just last night.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21@ hrhs556x: "Since when is Vista 650 bucks?"
Since those wankers at Microsoft just took the US dollar price and used the same number for UK Pounds. The Pound is worth roughly 2 of your Yankee Dollars so Vista Ultimate is about the equivalent of $650 over here.
It's actually worth MUCH less than $8. - libertao, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Yeah, he's a pretty violent hateful man....
- finkployd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22When someone who pirates it but says they are running Linux/BSD/OS2/OSX wants to tell you how overpriced it is and you should be using something else.
- Xenophix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Clearly Iran knows more about capitalism than the West does. Here a pirated copy is given away for free.
We have so much to learn. - hrhs556x, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Since when is Vista 650 bucks?
- jknight, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16I know the solution now for stopping the nuclear threat from Iran.
SPYWARE and BSODs
NSA + MS SOFTWARE = Bye Bye Iran.
Now only if they would vista to power their nukes! We could stop them with an exploit! - tunercircle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12$3 in Asia, per CD. If you buy 5 CDs, the fifth one is free ... :)
- dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11So, if people selling pirated copies of Vista get caught do they get a hand cut off as punishment?
- a0me, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Nowadays, hackers break the Vista copy protection every single day.
- fajita, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Fscking hilarious.
I can see it now, Microsoft will deploy their tanks, helicopters and jets. All of which are powered by Windows Mobile. The tanks will fire randomly. The Helicopters and jets will crash due to having to do a cold reboot. - kaniz, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18"Linux is free... if your time has no value."
Maybe that held true a couple of years ago. But now, I can install Linux faster than I can install Windows. And, depending on the distro/packages, I'll have 90% of the software I use daily already installed and not have to waste an afternoon or weekend setting things up.
Linux has come a LONG way, and its no longer something that takes days to get up and running. - bilal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They are using the same method as everyone else unfortunately.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Cool! If I needed 6 copies of Vista I could fly to Iran to buy them and still save money!
I wonder if they give tours of the uranium enrichment facilities... :) - shuffle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Just because YOU can do it certainly doesn't mean my technophobe *grandma* can.
NOTE - Replace *grandma* with your favorite technically illiterate person. - XISUPERMANIX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14I think pirated software is great, but when you try to resell it for your own profit that just makes you a fag, GET A JOB
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@ Spoiled
Read the article, all of it, including the story source. See that little bit at the bottom that says, "Via: taliyanews"? Now click the link. There you will find that Taliyanews.com is an Iranian news site, which explains a lot about the Iranian focus. Please do a little research before jumping to conclusions, inventing conspiracy theories, or yelling fire in the theater of the Internet. - JK1150, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wait till their computer gets automatically updated to work around the crack...
It's just not worth cracking your operating system every time your validation gets updated. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Why is this news???
People have been pirating Windows since it came out 30 years ago. - 0siris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8*ugly american* monopolies.
If it was a socialized EU project, everyone would be all for windows. - adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9That's what I cal fair market value.
- magicite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Indeed, when I visited Shanghai in early January, Vista was on sale in multiple locations for about that price. As others have questioned: why is it a big deal that Iran now has (relatively expensive) pirated copies of Vista for sale?
- DarthTater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The day after windows vista was released, pirated copies were reported to be selling (in $80 mexican pesos - around $7.3 U.S. dollars) in Mexico city. The newspaper Reforma in Mexico published pictures comparing the original package with the pirated one.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Chinatown (NYC) Vista on the streets $20.00, and if you buy it from the little old lady on Baxter and Canal she will throw in a DVD copy of Night at the Museum.
- bigfatelvis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7WTF has Iran got to do with anything? Copies have been free on the torrents for months. This is injected news, come on diggers please be more intelligent. Your government wants you to go to war with a country. What is that country's name again?
- Userfaulty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6About the same time Pirating used to be called Shareware and was contained on 5.25 Floppy disks.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I've never heard of this "Ubuntu" of which you speak. Can I get it at Walmart?
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Shuffle, your average technophobes can't install windows either, what is your point?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
what about the authentic keys?
The authentication server was cracked. You can run your own at home in a VM or spare PC and authenticate yourself. There are also websites that do it for you.
Microsoft isn't interested in completely stopping piracy. Piracy is in Microsoft's interest. Even if they lose 50% in sales, they still profit and they still keep control of the market.
Piracy only hurts small companies and independent devs. - cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Thats $8 more than I'll give for it.
- PleaseJustDie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10@jman8888
If your building buy an OEM copy, it costs about half as much. - ropers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Err, second thought: buried as **inaccurate**.
AFAIK the Islamic Republic of Iran and the US have NO bilateral agreements. Which means:
- The US is under no obligation to respect Iranian copyrights and doesn't do so.
- Vice versa, Iran is under no legal obligation to honor US copyrights and doesn't do so either.
So this is not piracy. This is not even copyright infringement. Any laws that would prevent anyone from copying the heck out of Vista simply DO NOT APPLY in Iran. Vista simply isn't copyrightable in Iran. Microsoft has no legal standing in Iran. Whoever gave Vista to Iran may be guilty of violating export controls, but the Iranians aren't guilty of jack squat.
It's a different story of course if you're outside of Iran, regardless of whether or not you're Iranian or downloading from Iranian servers, that's no excuse as in most other countries Vista is copyrighted.
